Dimethyl ether (DME) is an oxygenated fuel with a cetane number higher than that of diesel oil. It meets the ULEV emission regulation and reduces the smoke to almost zero when used in a diesel engine. In the present study, engine performance and exhaust emissions were investigated with a 3.3 liter conventional DI diesel engine by using dimethyl ether fuel. In this test, in order to increase the fuel injection rate of DME because of high compressibility and low hearting value compared to that of diesel, the nozzle opening pressure of the injectors was lowered and the plunger stroke of the injection pump was extended. Test results showed that the torque and the power with DME were almost same as those of pure diesel oil, but the brake thermal efficiency increased a little. <br/> Also, smoke index from DME engine showed nearly zero level and NOx was decreased a little compared to diesel oil.

Dimethyl Ether(DME) is a promising alternative fuel to reduce the smoke to almost zero level when used in diesel engines. However, neat DME may cause serious wear on the fuel injection system because of its low lubricity. In the present study, biodiesel which is another promising alternative fuel for diesel engine was used to improve the low lubricity of DME without deterioration of smoke-free characteristic of DME. Test results show that the DME-biodiesel blended fuels show almost zero smoke with good engine performance.

Dimethyl ether(DME) is an oxygenated fuel with a cetane number higher than that of diesel oil. It meets the ULEV emission regulation and reduces the smoke to almost zero when used in a diesel engine. In the present study, engine performance and exhaust emissions were' investigated with a 8 liter conventional DI diesel engine by using dimethyl ether fuel for development of medium-duty DME bus. Test results showed that the torque and the power with DME were about 70% as those of pure diesel oil, but the brake thermal efficiency decreased a little. Also, smoke index from DME engine showed nearly zero level and NOx was decreased a little compared to diesel oil.
