Monitoring of Bearing Wear in a Marine Engine by Change of Piston Position – Effect of Wear and Inertia

Pradipta Vaskar Biswas,안중환,이효렬 한국정밀공학회 2013 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol. No.

Wear monitoring of the journal bearings is one of the biggest issue in a marine engine because it can cause failure of the system without prior notice. BMW (Bearing Wear Monitoring), which is an indirect method to monitor the bearing wear using a change of the bottom dead center level of a piston, seems to be an effective way to monitor the bearing wear in real engine operation but it is important to separate the effect due to the wear from the other due to the inertia and the load. In this paper the characteristics of wear effect and inertia effect are investigated theoretically and simulated to find their differences. Several previous researches on bearing wear are used to calculate the wear depth with a given real engine specification. The inertia effects are investigated in a real engine with speed varied. A motor driven crank-slider is used to measure the total effects instead of a real engine. It proves that the two effects are separated so that the bearing wear can be monitored by measuring the change of the bottom dead center level of the engine piston.

Peripartum Cardiomyopathy: Review of the Literature

        Pradipta Bhakta,Binay K Biswas,Basudeb Banerjee 연세대학교의과대학 2007 Yonsei medical journal Vol.48 No.5

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare but serious form of cardiac failure affecting women in the last months of pregnancy or early puerperium. Clinical presentation of PPCM is similar to that of systolic heart failure from any cause, and it can sometimes be complicated by a high incidence of thromboembolism. Prior to the availability of echocardiography, diagnosis was based only on clinical findings. Recently, inclusion of echocardiography has made diagnosis of PPCM easier and more accurate. Its etiopathogenesis is still poorly understood, but recent evidence supports inflammation, viral infection and autoimmunity as the leading causative hypotheses. Prompt recognition with institution of intensive treatment by a multidisciplinary team is a prerequisite for improved outcome. Conventional treatment consists of diuretics, β blockers, vasodilators, and sometimes digoxin and anticoagulants, usually in combination. In resistant cases, newer therapeutic modalities such as immunomodulation, immunoglobulin and immunosuppression may be considered. Cardiac transplantation may be necessary in patients not responding to conventional and newer therapeutic strategies. The role of the anesthesiologist is important in perioperative and intensive care management. Prognosis is highly related to reversal of ventricular dysfunction. Compared to historically higher mortality rates, recent reports describe better outcome, probably because of advances in medical care. Based on current information, future pregnancy is usually not recommended in patients who fail to recover heart function. This article aims to provide a comprehensive updated review of PPCM covering etiopathogeneses, clinical presentation and diagnosis, as well as pharmacological, perioperative and intensive care management and prognosis, while stressing areas that require further research.

      • Development of a Tip-Tilt Mechanism for a 1 m large mirror

        Young-Soo KIM,Ju Heon Koh,Hwa Kyoung Jung,Pradipta Biswas,Ho June Jung,Ho-Sang Kim,Kyoung-Don Lee,Myung Cho,Hyo-Sung Ahn,Ho-Soon Yang,Byeong-Gon Park 한국항공우주학회 2012 한국항공우주학회 학술발표회 논문집 Vol.2012 No.11

A tip-tilt mechanism is one of the key technologies in satellite payloads for meteorology and remote sensing. The same technology is also used for ground telescopes to enhance the image quality. Giant Magellan Telescope is a next generation giant telescope, which contains a tip-tilt secondary mirror. A consortium led by Korea Astronomy and Space science Institute (KASI) is developing a prototype of the tip-tilt secondary mirror. The prototype is a full-size segment of the secondary mirror system, consisted of a dummy mirror, a mirror cell, three axial supports, a lateral support, and a vacuum device. Design, analysis, manufacturing, and assembly have been performed, and system test will be followed. In this paper, development of the prototype is presented and a sample test is shown. The tip-tilt technology will be beneficial to many fields related to precision control.
