J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace: Expression of Disgrace in Contemporary Post-Apartheid South-Africa

From the perspective of a cultural researcher, it can be said this paper tries to unveil the meaning of the expression “disgrace” in the work Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee with the purpose of finding out how Coetzee depicts David Lurie’s disgrace in the entire novel, and what he does to gain his grace back. In addition, the approach of a New Historicism used in this article can help reflect something about Coetzee and his current society to today’s readers. Much more than that, at deeper level of research, it can be revealed that this novel is filled with both critique and judgment of the South African system, its moral standards as well as its citizens. And, it seems Coetzee is right when he says that he just depicts a factual state as he sees it because the entire novel is the description of a huge South African society.
Relationship between Humanism and Nationalism in Ho Chi Minh’s Prison Diary in a Third-World Context

To understand the relationship between humanism and nationalism in Ho Chi Minh (HCM)’s Prison Diary (PD) in the light of Postcolonialism, this study focused on analyzing selected poems to find out in what ways humanism and nationalism are equally important in HCM’s PD, in what ways they seem conflicting and exclusionary, in what ways the relationship shapes what might be called the “postcolonial aesthetic” of PD, and in what ways its use of alternative modes, gestures, motifs or protocols from traditional or modern poetry are a function of the dynamics between the concrete specificity of Vietnamese nationalism and humanism. Five in nine poems discussed in the paper are short ones with four lines and seven words in each line. The others consist of two or three short stanzas; still, they all are written in Chinese characters in accordance with Tang poetry tradition using simple vocabulary. In terms of content, the poems deal with a range of topics which are in keeping with the conventions of the Tang poetry like human beings, animal, nature, situations, things, time, and experiences and situations in different Chinese prisons. In addition, stories about social life become a source of aspirations in the prison poems. The discussion shows that the poems in PD connect nationalism to humanism in the context of Postcolonialism as explained by Said (2004), and specifically in the context of third-world literature as agued by Jameson (1986), making PD unique and distinctive. Read as “national allegory,” following Jameson’s argument, HCM’s poetry embodies the humanism and nationalism of the Vietnamese people in the midst of their struggle for national independence.
Humanism in Ho Chi Minh’s Prison Diary in a Third-world Context

This paper explores the elements constituting humanism in HCM’s PD as explained in two different sections which explore how humanism is embodied in five selected poems of PD and how it underpins the poems’ aesthetics. However, it must be noted that the politics of his poems also significantly contribute to the “conditions of possibility” of HCM’s poetics. Therefore, the second section explores how the aesthetics of PD may be linked to its politics. And the conclusion of the chapter discusses the factors constituting humanism in HCM’s PD.
NATIONALISM IN HO CHI MINH’S PRISON DIARY IN A THIRD-WORLD CONTEXT

To have a general idea about the significance of nationalism in Prison Diary (PD) in the light of Postcolonialism, this paper aims to analyze how nationalism is constitutive of Ho Chi Minh (HCM)’s PD. According to Snyder, nationalism is the strongest of political emotions (Snyder 1968: 447); moreover, it is “the most successful political ideology in human history in that it has caused the political map of the world to be redrawn” (Tope1998: 15). To find out how nationalism is embodied in HCM’s poetry, eight poems in PD are chosen for analysis. The study shows that HCM’s nationalism is embedded in two aspects of PD’s poetics: aesthetics and politics. On the one hand, in terms of aesthetics, nationalism is constituted by deploying poetic elements as much as by using humanist values in the poems. On the other hand, in terms of politics, nationalism is clearly integral in the anti-colonial emphasis of the themes of revolutionary heroism and patriotism. Both aspects intersect to constitute PD’s nationalism.
The Identity of the Subaltern Class in Adiga’s The White Tiger

The White Tiger, which was first published in 2008, is the debut novel by Adiga in Indian literature. It reveals the two faces of an Indian society: “an India of light and an India of darkness”, with the main theme portraying the contrast between India’s rise as a modern global economy and its working or subaltern class, who live in crushing poverty. To unravel the subaltern class’ identity in Adiga’s The White Tiger from the perspective of a postcolonial dialectics, this study focuses on analyzing how the image of the subaltern class is portrayed in Adiga’s Indian society. It also seeks to unravel the nature of this class, its identity and the causes of its emergence, its persecution, its voiceless and its backlash.
Artocarpus nigrifolius: Cytotoxic and Antibacterial Constituents

Six known compounds including α-amyrin 3-acetate (1), β-sitosterol (2), betulinic acid (3), friedelan-3-one (4),artochamin B (5), and 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-O-α-D-glucopyranoside (6) were isolated from the stem barks and leaves of Artocarpus nigrifolius (Moraceae) for the first time. Their structures were identified by spectroscopic methods as well as comparison with literatures. Cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity of 1-6 were evaluated. Results showed that artochamin B (5)possessed the highest cytotoxicity towards MCF7, Lu, HepG2,and KB cell lines with IC50 values of 4.59, 20.00, 3.60, and 1.18μg/mL, respectively. It also inhibited the growth of Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus), whereas inactive on the growth of both Gram-negative bacteria and yeast.

This work examined the corrosion protection performance of benzoate loaded hydrotalcite/graphene oxide (HT/GO-BZ) for carbon steel. HT/GO-BZ was fabricated by the co-precipitation method and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electronic microscopy. The corrosion inhibition action of HT/GO-BZ on carbon steel in 0.1 M NaCl solution was evaluated by electrochemical measurements. The benzoate content in HT/GO-BZ was determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Subsequently, the effect of HT/GO-BZ on the corrosion resistance of the water-based epoxy coating was investigated by the salt spray test. The obtained results demonstrated the intercalation of benzoate and GO in the hydrotalcite structure. The benzoate content in HT/GO-BZ was about 16%. The polarization curves of the carbon steel electrode revealed anodic corrosion inhibition activity of HT/GO-BZ and the inhibition efficiency was about 95.2% at a concentration of 3g/L. The GO present in HT/GO-BZ enhanced the inhibition effect of HT-BZ. The presence of HT/GO-BZ improved the corrosion resistance of the waterborne epoxy coating.

This study investigates the influence of community involvement on the destination sustainability for community destinations and spiritual destinations in Vietnam. Community involvement is measured by two constructs, which are community attachment and residents' support. A structural questionnaire consisting of 41 observation variables measured on a 5-point Likert scale was used to survey households who live in a spiritual destination in An Giang province and three community destinations in Lang Son province with the help of local tour guides and Youth Union. 168 out of 200 responses collected were valid for multivariate data analysis. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) reveal three main findings. Firstly, community attachment has a direct effect on both perceived benefits and destination sustainability. Secondly, while residents' support has a direct effect on perceived benefits, it indirectly affects destination sustainability. Finally, community destinations have a higher level of sustainability than the spiritual destination. Based on those findings, this study proposed three suggestions for local authorities, policymakers, and residents to improve the sustainable development of their local tourism destinations, including (1) diversifying local tourism products, (2) encouraging the community participation in tourism development programs, and (3) increasing in the expected benefits in local tourism development policies.

Acid leaching and a two-step solvent extraction procedure were developed to produce high purity mixture of La and Ce from iron-rich spent FCC catalyst discharged from Dzung Quat refinery (Vietnam). Acid leaching of the spent catalyst with 2M HNO3 and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1/3 at 80 oC in 1 h dissolved almost 90% of La while 12% of Al and 25% of Fe were transferred to the leachate. The extraction of RE metals and main impurities such as Al and Fe by a mixture of di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) was investigated. Experiments showed that it was necessary to remove Fe before extracting RE and the optimum extraction conditions for a high recovery of RE while 0% of Al extraction were pH1, contact time=10min, and D2EHPA/TBP volume ratio= 4 : 1. At these conditions, the extraction yields of La(III) and Ce(III) were 72% and 89%, respectively. A two-step solvent extraction was developed to achieve a high purity of RE mixture, which included (1) the removal of impurity Fe by 25% (v/v) diisooctyl phosphinic acid (DiOPA) in n-octane for 140 min, (2) the extraction of rare earths by a mixture of di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) in n-octane for 10 min without the need for adjusting the pH of the leaching solution.
