Comparative Korean Studies Vol.29 No.1

‘Korean Studies’ is a very controversial concept. As we can see from a pretty much intrinsic question if it can be acknowledged as a ‘Studies’ as well as other issues like limiting its subjects, organizing genealogy, etc., ‘Korean Studies’ interacts with outside and keeps changing like an organism even at this moment. However, numerous researchers will sympathize with the necessity to clearly organize the process that we once have gone through here and now. In this book, the birth of the concept ‘Korean Studies’ and the process of its transition are examined in multilateral ways based on desires that have been inspired inside us and external influences. The 12 articles written by researchers with different specialties, diverse background knowledges, and various interests get exquisitely woven and forms a single image. Matters to be obtained and questioned are as many as the number of diverse discussions currently being made. Is this book, which can be regarded as contemporary opinions, sufficient to serve as a part of the whole picture of the modern ‘Korean Studies’ and sites of knowledge in East Asia? The contents of this book are to be introduced and performances achieved as well as questions arisen in terms of the studies are to be examined in this article from the viewpoint of a spontaneous and active debater.

The Relationship of Sexual Abuse with Self-Esteem, Depression, and Problematic Internet Use in Korean Adolescents

2017 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.14 No.3

The association of sexual victimization with self-esteem, depression, and problematic internet use was examined in Korean adolescents. A total of 695 middle and high school students were recruited (413 boys, 282 girls, mean age, 14.06±1.37 years). The participants were administered the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (ETISR-SF), Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), and Young’s Internet Addiction Test (IAT). The associations between sexual abuse and the level of self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and problematic internet use were analyzed. Adolescents who had experienced sexual abuse showed lower self-esteem, more depressive symptoms, and greater problematic internet use compared with adolescents who had not experienced sexual abuse. In the path model, sexual abuse predicted lower self-esteem (β=-0.11; 95% CI=-0.20, -0.04; p=0.009), which predicted higher depressive symptoms (β=-0.34; 95% CI=-0.40, -0.27; p=0.008). Depressive symptoms predicted problematic internet use in a positive way (β=0.23; 95% CI=0.16-0.29; p=0.013). Sexual abuse also predicted problematic internet use directly (β=0.20; 95% CI=0.12–0.27; p=0.012). The results of the present study indicate that sexually abused adolescents had a higher risk of depression and problematic internet use. For sexually abused adolescents, programs aimed at raising self-esteem and preventing internet addiction, as well as mental health screening, are needed.

        Subin Park,Soo-Churl Cho,Ohyang Kwon,Jeong-Hoon Bae,Jae-Won Kim,Min-Sup Shin,Hee-Jeong Yoo,Bung-Nyun Kim 대한소아청소년정신의학회 2015 소아청소년정신의학 Vol.26 No.4

Objectives:We compared the clinical presentations of manic and depressive episodes and the treatment response among children and adolescents with bipolar disorder (BD) types I and II and BD not otherwise specified (NOS). Methods:The sample consisted of 66 patients, aged between 6 and 18 years, who were admitted for BD to a 20-bed child and adolescent psychiatric ward in a university hospital located in Seoul, Korea. Results:Patients with BD type I were more likely to have lower intelligence quotients and exhibit violent behaviors during manic episodes than patients with BD type II or BD NOS and to show better treatment responses during manic episodes than patients with BD NOS. Patients with BD NOS were more likely to have an irritable mood rather than a euphoric mood during the manic phase than patients with BD type I or II and to exhibit violent behaviors during the depressive phase and chronic course than patients with BD type II. Conclusion:Pediatric BD patients are heterogeneous with respect to their clinical characteristics. Implications for the usefulness of the current diagnostic subtype categories should be investigated in future studies.

Associations of Internet Use with Oral Hygiene Based on National Youth Risk Behavior Survey

Vol.29 No.1

Objectives: To investigate the association of problematic Internet use with oral health behaviors and oral health status in a nationally representative sample of Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the 2010 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (73238 Korean adolescents; mean age 15.06±1.75 years; age range, 12–18 years) were used. Problematic Internet use was measured using the Korean Internet Addiction Proneness Scale for Youth-Short Form. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess oral health behaviors and oral health status of adolescents. Results: Problematic Internet users were less likely to brush their teeth frequently [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=0.59; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.56–0.63] and at school after lunch (AOR=0.89; 95% CI=0.83–0.94) as well as more likely to perceive their oral health to be poorer (AOR=1.63, 95% CI=1.54–1.72) and experience oral symptoms (AOR=1.75, 95% CI=1.65–1.86) compared to usual Internet users. Conclusion: The study results indicate that problematic Internet use may adversely affect the oral health of Korean adolescents. Thus, oral health screening and Internet-based education are needed for adolescents experiencing problematic Internet use.

Vol.29 No.1

Resazurin-based microtiter assay was used to evaluate the inhibitory effect of fungicides on the respiration of Colletotrichum acutatum s. lat. 20JDS8 sensitive and 20CDJ6 resistant to strobilurin fungicides. The spores of C. acutatum s. lat. 20JDS8 were inoculated into potato dextrose broth (PDB) at densities of 1x104, 1x105 and 1x106 spores/ml, respectively. The relative fluorescence unit (RFU) of all treatments inoculated at each spore density started to rise after 12 hr of incubation, and were 1,965.5, 5,412.5, and 10,061.0, respectively, after 24 hr of incubation. To evaluate the inhibitory effect of fungicide on the respiration of the pathogen, the spores of the pathogen were inoculated into the PDB and treated with the fungicides 0, 6, 12, and 24 hr after incubation, respectively. After keeping the pathogen culturing for another 24 hr, PrestoBlue reagent was treated into the PDB culturing the pathogen. The RFU of each treatment was examined 1 hr after the reagent was treated. When dithianon, isopyrazam, pyraclostrobin, and fluazinam were treated at high concentrations in the stages of spores (immediately after inoculation [0 hr]), spore germination (after incubation for 6 hr), and hyphal growth (after incubation for 12 hr), the respiration of pathogens was inhibited by 90–100%. When the fungicides were treated after culturing the pathogen for 24 hr, the respiratory inhibitory effects were greatly reduced. With pyraclostrobin-resistant C. acutatum s. lat. 20CDJ6, azxoystrobin, trifloxystrobin and kresoxim-methyl, which have the same mode of action, had very little or no respiratory inhibitory effect in all growth stages of pathogens. Based on the above results, it was thought that the resazurin-based microtiter assay could quickly and accurately evaluate the inhibitory efficacy of the fungicides that inhibited respiration.

      • Understanding impacts of aggressive driving on freeway safety and mobility: A multi-agent driving simulation approach

        Park, Subin,Oh, Cheol,Kim, Yunjong,Choi, Saerona,Park, Seri Elsevier 2019 Transportation research. Part F, Traffic psycholog Vol.64 No.-

Abstract

Considering that aggressive driving behavior significantly contributes to crash occurrences, it is necessary to establish appropriate safety strategies for managing and suppressing the risk factor of aggressive driving behavior. Understanding the characteristics of aggressive driving and its impact on traffic stream is fundamental to developing safety countermeasures. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the crash potential under the various aggressive driving events on freeways based on both driving simulators and microscopic traffic simulation model, VISSIM. A novel feature of this study is the application of a multi-agent driving simulation facility, where two driving simulators are connected to establish a network that can render synchronized driving in the same space. The results of the driving simulation were used for modifying the driving behavior parameters of VISSIM. This approach will enable to effectively represent the driving behavior of aggressive drivers and normal drivers under various aggressive driving cases. Study results indicated that aggressive driving deteriorated not only the network safety performance represented by the crash potential index (CPI) but also the mobility represented by travel speeds. The outcomes of this study would be useful in developing well-informed countermeasures and supporting policy making-activities to prevent aggressive driving events.

Highlights

A multi-agent driving simulation was used to analyze the driving aggressiveness.

The results of the driving simulation were used for VISSIM simulations.

Impact of aggressive driving was evaluated in terms of freeway safety ad mobility.

The outcomes of this study would support safety polices for driving aggressiveness.
