<P>We describe a novel case of simultaneous karyotypic abnormalities of isochromosome 17q and trisomy 14 in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in leukemic transformation. A 66-yr-old Korean man was admitted to Severance Hospital for evaluation of pancytopenia. On the basis of bone marrow studies at 3 different stages, he was diagnosed with MDS in leukemic transformation. Chromosome karyotyping repeatedly showed the same main clonal abnormalities, including isochromosome 17q and trisomy 14. Isochromosome 17q and trisomy 14 have each been reported as rare, nonrandom recurrent chromosomal abnormalities in patients with MDS showing a poor prognosis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of concurrent i(17)(q10) and trisomy 14 in a patient with MDS in leukemic transformation.</P>

Germination and seedling elongation of three hybrids and their five inbreds of corn [Suwon 19 : KS 5 x KS 6, Hoengsongok : (KS 15 x KS 16) KS 5, and Jinjuok : (KS 15 x KS 16) Ga 209]were measured at two temperatures (15 and 30 C) and four polyethylene glycol (PEG) 10,000 solutions (0, 20, 30 and 35g/100gH₂o). Adjustments of PEG 10,000 solutions were based on water potentials of 0.0, -0.5, -1.1 and -1.5 MPa at room temperature. Observations were taken at 3, 6, 9 and 12 days for 15 C and 1, 2, 3 and 4 days for 30C. Fifteen seeds of each of three corn hybrids and their five inbreds were placed on Whatman No. 1(9cm) filter paper in plastic petridishes, and adjusted to 15 ml of the proper PEG 10,000 solution supplemented with 0.2 percent thiram using automatic syringe. The dishes were covered with cap. The seeds were germinated at a constant temperature of 15 or 30 C under dark conditions for programmed period. Seedling moisture content and seedling length of three corn hybrids and their five inbeds were decreased as PEG concentration increased both at 15 and 30C. Varietal differences in seedling moisture content and seedling length of corn were found among eight hybrids and inbreds at temperatures of 15 and 30 C. Mean seedling moisture content of inbred KS 16 showed the highest, and inbred KS 15 was observed the lowest among eight hybrids and inbreds. however, mean seedling lengths of three hybrids were greater than inbreds from 20 to 30g/100g water of PEG concentrations. Hybrid Jinjuok showed the greatest mean seeding length among three hybrids. The results of this study indicated that germination test of corn seeds in aqueous solutions of PEG has potential for screening corn genotypes for improved emergence at moisture stress.
Size Dependence of the Photo- and Cathodo-luminescence of Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>S:Eu Phosphors

$Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphors were synthesized via solid-state reactions. $Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphor particles of various sizes were obtained by varying the firing temperature and firing time. The photoluminescence properties of these $Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphors were examined. In addition, the cathodoluminescence properties of the $Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphors were examined for applied voltages of 3-8 kV. The relationship between the luminescence intensity and particle size of the$Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphors was investigated. The photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence of the $Y_2O_2S$:Eu phosphors are affected differently by variations in particle size.

Promoter of the Drosophila proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) gene contains DRE (Drosophila DNA replication-related element) required for the high level expression of replication-related genes. Recently, we found that promoter region of the D-raf (a Drosophila homolog of the human c-raf-1) contains two sequences homologous to the DRE and demonstrated the DRE/DREF (DRE-binding factor) involvement in regulation of the D-raf gene. In this study, using ursolic acid (UA), a pentacyclic triterpene acid reported to possess antitumor activities, we examined effects of UA on proliferation of the Drosophila cultured Kc cells and on expression of the PCNA and D-raf genes. UA showed an inhibitory effect on proliferation of the Kc cells in a concentration-dependent manner in DNA content assays and [3H]thymidine incorporation assays. The IC50 value of anti-proliferative effects of UA in DNA content assays was about 7.5uM. UA showed inhibitory effects on expression of the PCNA as well as on that of the D-raf, which were examined with the reporter plasmic p5'-168DPCNACAT or p5'-878DrafCAT, respectively. The results obtained in the present study suggest that expression of the PCNA and D-raf genes is coordinately regulated in at least UA-treated Kc cells and that down-regulation of expression of the PCNA and D-raf genes might be related with the antitumor activities of UA.
Effects of Ridge Height in Dry Paddy Field on Growth and Seed Yield of Soybean Cultivars

Excessive soil water in paddy field induces growth losses during the vegetative stages of soybean plants. Our objectives were to know growth responses of soybean as affected by the level of ridge heights. A field experiment was conducted at the Research Farm of Korea University near Seoul in 1996. Ten cultivars of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) were planted at the ridge heights of 10, 30, and 50cm in paddy soil on 27 June. Total dry matter accumulation at the 10cm ridge height was severely decreased until the growth stage of R5 as compared to the ridge heights of 30 and 50cm, and this decrement was mainly due to both reduced leaf and stem dry weights. However, seed dry weight was not significantly decreased at the lower ridge height with the increment of harvest index. Cultivar differences were found on seed dry weight, crop growth rate from R1 to R5, and leaf/stem ratio of R5. From the above results, soybean growth responses to excessive soil water in paddy field were different between seed filling stage and late vegetative to early reproductive growth stages
