Influence of Al2O3 Content and Cooling Rate on Crystallization in Fe2O3–CaO–SiO2–Al2O3 Systems
Tae Jun Park,Joon Sung Choi,Dong Joon Min 대한금속·재료학회 2022 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.28 No.9
The behavior of silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) phases and the influence of sintered ore quality were investigatedusing a confocal laser scanning microscope to understand how the Al2O3content of iron ore affects the sintered orestructure and the crystallization behavior of SFCA in a Fe2O3–CaO–Al2O3–SiO2 pseudo-quaternary system. The experimentalresults were used to inform simulations of the heterogeneous dynamic behavior in response to the rapid temperature changesand various chemical compositions typically encountered in actual sintering processes. Increasing the Al2O3content in theFe2O3–CaO–Al2O3–SiO2 pseudo-quaternary system led to the hematite content decreasing, which affects the reducibilityof the sintered ore. The correlation between the creation of SFCA and the cooling effect associated with varying the Al2O3is discussed in detail.

<P>Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second leading neurodegenerative disease, and is known to be induced by environmental factors or genetic mutations. Among the verified genetic mutations of PD, Parkin, isolated from the PARK2 locus, shows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern and is known to be an E3 ligase. However, the physiological target of Parkin and the molecular mechanism of Parkin-deficiency-induced PD have not been clearly demonstrated until now. It has recently been proposed that inflammation, suggesting as a causal factor for PD, is enhanced by Parkin deficiency. Thus, we examined the relationship between inflammation-related factors and Parkin. Here, we provide the evidence that Parkin suppresses inflammation and cytokine-induced cell death by promoting the proteasomal degradation of TRAF2/6 (TNF-α receptor-associated factor 2/6). Overexpression of Parkin can reduce the half-lives of TRAF2 and TRAF6, whereas si-Parkin can extend them. However, mutant Parkins did not alter the expression of TRAF2/6. Thus, loss of Parkin enhances sensitivity to TNF-α- or IL-1β-induced JNK activation and NF-κB activation. Indeed, si-Parkin-induced apoptosis is suppressed by the knockdown of TRAF6 or TRAF2. We also observed elevated expression levels of TRAF6 and a reduction of IκB in an 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-induced PD mouse model. Moreover, elevated expression levels or aggregation of TRAF6 were detected in approximately half of the human PD tissues (7/15 cases) and 2 cases, respectively. In addition, TRAF6 and Parkin expression levels show a reverse relationship in human PD tissues. Our results strongly suggest that the reduction of Parkin or overexpression of TRAF2/6 by chronic inflammation would be the reason for occurrence of PD.</P>

This research has analyzed factors affecting customers` satisfaction when they use parking lots of big retailers so that, in case of constructing, operating or managing such retailers, proper measures can be come up with. The analysis has been implemented on the basis of survey, and influence factors including entry/exit lamp, parking cars`` traffic flow, parking type, pedestrians`` movement after parking and safety. Parking lot users`` satisfaction has been analyzed by using the Structural Equation Modelling and, as a result of it, in case of a detached or single building, pedestrians movement flow after parking contributed the most to the users`` satisfaction, while, in case of multipurpose complex, parking cars traffic flow has the most influential factor. It is interpreted that users of a single building put a bigger emphasis on entry to the shop and their way back to the parked area after their shopping while customers of multipurpose complex might have various purposes of visiting the place and there are relatively more cars so that they put more emphasis on traffic counterflow, other cars and pedestrians.

<P>Thalassiosira species are an important component of phytoplankton populations, and most species are considered cosmopolitan. Many authors have investigated the diversity of Thalassiosira species in order to understand their ecological roles in local areas. Our regional taxonomic study revealed the presence of 44 Thalassiosira species at 124 sites in Korean coastal waters. Of these, 14 species are newly reported in Korean waters and are described in detail with external and internal valve illustrations. Some morphologically confused taxa, such as the Thalassiosira s.s. group, T. curviseriata/T. tealata, T. simonsenii/Planktoniella blanda and T. proschkinae/T. spinulata, are clearly distinguished using additional morphological criteria. In addition, the full biogeographical distribution of Thalassiosira is described and compared with the Korean species. Korean waters seem to be the 'Maginot Line' for the cold-and warm-water Thalassiosira species. Knowledge of Thalassiosira species diversity will increase with more intensive work in relatively little-studied regions, such as the Indo-Pacific and tropical Atlantic Oceans.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We present a new strategy to strongly and effectively immobilize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on polyamide thin film composite membranes to endow antibacterial activity. This method relies on the immobilization of relatively large silica particles (SiO2, ~400nm in diameter), where AgNPs of ~30nm in diameter are tightly and densely bound (AgNP@SiO2), on the membrane surface using cysteamine as a covalent linker. The formation of multiple Ag–S chemical bonds between a “bumpy” AgNP@SiO2 and the rough membrane surface provides a great leaching stability of AgNPs and AgNP@SiO2. AgNP@SiO2 particles were well distributed over the entire membrane surface without severe aggregation. The surface coverage of the membrane by AgNP@SiO2 was tuned by adjusting the deposition time and AgNP@SiO2 particle concentration. The AgNP@SiO2-immobilized membrane showed excellent antibacterial properties against <I>Escherichia coli</I>, <I>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</I> and <I>Staphylococcus aureus,</I> even with a relatively low particle coverage. Importantly, the separation performance (water flux and salt rejection) of the membrane was not impaired by particle immobilization. These beneficial effects are attributed mainly to the sparse and good distribution of AgNP@SiO2, which can reinforce the antibacterial activity of AgNPs while having a negligible impact on the hydraulic resistance.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> AgNP@SiO2 hybrid particles are immobilized on the polyamide TFC RO membrane. </LI> <LI> Multiple Ag–S chemical bonds provide the great leaching stability of AgNP@SiO2. </LI> <LI> The membrane performance was not degraded by the immobilization of AgNP@SiO2. </LI> <LI> AgNP@SiO2-immobilized membrane has strong and long-lasting antibacterial activity. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Development of high durability plasma filter for air circulating disinfection system
Park Joo Young,Baek Ki Ho,Kim Sang-jin,Choi Joon-Hwan,Yoon Hyunkyung,Park Hunkwan,Kim Giyeong,이승훈 한국물리학회 2022 Current Applied Physics Vol.41 No.-
Deadly diseases are caused by pathogenic bacteria and viruses that spread, among other means, through air circulating systems; hence, it is important to focus on pathogen removal from the air before circulating air through the system. Our paper introduces a novel plasma-based filter that, when used in an air circulating system with particulate air filter, disinfects the air flow. This device, based on dielectric filter discharge (DFD) structure with low pressure drops, indicates easy installation into existing air circulating system. Its performance was evaluated in accordance with the specifications of duct used in hospitals, with consistent O3 generation during 200 h showing high durability. Escherichia coli and Micrococcus luteus were used as the target airborne bacteria; the system exhibited a removal efficiency of approximately 99.99% on bacterial aerosols and continuous bactericidal action, demonstrating that the DFD system can be directly applied to existing air circulating systems.

The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is rapidly increasing due to the adoption of a Westernized lifestyle; at the same time, safe and efficient treatment is required due to the side effects and refractoriness of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The frequently used multi-compound treatment for GERD in the current traditional Korean medicine (TKM) clinical field comprises Crassostrea gigas Thunberg shell (CGTS), Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam (BCT), Ponciri Fructus Immaturus (PFI), Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (SBG), medicated leaven (ML) and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (GRR). The current review was based on “Kun-Shin-Choa-Sa” theory and network analysis was conducted to explore the potential pharmacological activities, including efficacy and mechanisms of action of multi-compound treatment against GERD. Hypergeometric test results showed that the targets of multi-compound treatment are significantly associated with GERD gene sets, consistent with the literature review findings. In particular, the enrichment analysis indicated that the SBG targets are related to the IL-17 signaling pathway, bile secretion, small-cell lung cancer, and non-small cell lung cancer, corroborating the literature review, particularly concerning anti-inflammatory effect. In the literature review, CGTS and BCT, classified as “Kun,” play a role in anti-acid, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative effects. The complementary “Shin” herbs, PFI and SBG, showed functions related to improving the prolonged gastric emptying rate, peristalsis, and a gastric cytoprotective effect. With the role of “Choa,” ML was suggested to inhibit H. pylori growth and diminish gastric acid secretion, consistent with the gastric acid secretion pathway in the enrichment analysis. However, the enrichment analysis did not show any significantly related pathways for CGTS and PFI, which may reflect the lack of information in the KEGG database in terms of the link between GERD, its mechanisms, and the abundance of minerals in CGTS. Despite the pharmacological potential of multi-compound treatment, this study should be corroborated by well-designed future experimental studies.
