        We developed an occupational therapy tool to maintain and improve the cognitive function for the elderly who have senile dementia. 86 elderly people took a mininal mental state examination (MMSE) for the therapy to perform the occupational therapy, and divided into three groups based on avarage ages and MMSE values. The occupational therapy was treated three times per week for 10 weeks. The results showed that there were significant differences in the performing scores before and after the treatment ; the scores for the occupational therapy were increased significantly (p<0.001) and the performing time was shortened from 6-week throughout 10-week regimen. This study was to examine the effect on the activity of antioxidant enzymes by occupational therapy. The activities of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, Glutathion-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were increased to the normal standard by the occupational therapy for the elderly having dementia. The recovery of activities of antioxidant enzymes was obvious in severe demented elderly compared to those in normal or mild demented elderly. These results suggest that the occupational therapy had an beneficial effect on the protection against the oxidative stress especially for severe demented elderly, and the occupational tool need to be modified so as to improve the protection against the oxidative stress for normal and/or mild demented elderly.

      • PCR과 RFLP를 이용한 자궁경부암과 난소암에서의 Clonality

        Knowledge of the clonal origin of a tumor has important conceptual and practical implications. Cancers are believed to arise through multistep accumulation of xomatic mutations in the progeny of a single cell of origin. DNAs from cervical and ovarian carcinoma were used for investication of their clonalities, Clonality was investigated in two different ways. First, HPRT gene was examined by southern blotting to show materanl and paternal copies of the X-chromosome linked gene through a RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) and to distinguish active copies from inactive ones of this gene through methylation changes. Second, polymorphic portion of X-chromosome linked PGK (phosphoglycerate kinase)gene was amplified by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) after selective digestion of the active X chromosome with a methylation sensitive restriction enzyme(Hpa Ⅱ). Twenty four cervical carcinomas were analysed, 6 of them were informative for the HPRT gene. 5 of 17 cervical carcinoma patients were informative for the PGK gene. Fourteen ovarian carcinomas were analysed, and 6 of them were informative for the PGK gene. In one of the PGK cases analysed in ovarian carcinoma, there was clear evidence of monoclonal origin. The remaining 16 cases were not clear whether they are monoclonal origin or not because of band patterns suggessting possibility of DNA contamination from normal cell in tumor tissues. The results suggest that ovarian carcinomas is a monoclonal origin. These experiments have important implications for understanding of the natural history of cancer and for clinical strategies aimed at prevention and treatment. Further studies will be required to clarity the clonal origin of gynecilogic malignancies.

      • 경사진 트레드밀에서 후방보행운동을 통한 넙다리네갈래근 강화와 요통의 관계

        목적: 본 연구에서는 경사진 트레드밀에서의 후방 보행 훈련을 통한 넙다리네갈래근의 강화가 요통 환자의 치료에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 대상: 만성 요통을 호소하는 16명의 환자를 대상으로 연구를 실시 하였다. 방법: 트레드밀을 10° 경사로 맞춰놓은 상태에서 대상자들은 하루 20분, 일주일에 3회의 빈도로 2주 동안 훈련을 하였다. 표면 근전도를 가지고 넓다리 곧은근, 안쪽 넓은근, 가쪽 넓은근, 척추 세움근의 %MVIC를 측정하였고, KODI와 VAS를 통해 대상자들의 통증정도를 측정하였다. 결과: 넓다리 곧은근은 훈련전에 비해 훈련을 하고 난 후 상대적으로 높은 근전도를 보였고, 통계적으로 유의하였다(p<.05). 안쪽 넓은근과 가쪽 넓은근 또한 높은 근전도율을 보였지만 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았다. 척추 세움근은 훈련전에 비해 훈련을 하고 난 후 높은 근전도율을 보여주었고, 통계적으로 유의하였다(p<.05). VAS와 KODI의 평균값은 명백하게 감소되었고, 통계적으로 유의하였다(p<.05). 결론: 이상의 결론을 종합하면, 후방보행을 통한 넙다리네갈래근의 강화는 요통의 감소에 효과적이라고 사료되며, 더불어 넙다리네갈래근으로 접근하여 요통을 경감하는 중재방법이 효과적인 치료 방법이 될 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. Purpose: This study was to investigate the influence of strengthening the Quadriceps femoris through backward walking treadmill training in the patients who have lower back pain. Subjects: Sixteen subjects with chronic lower back pain were included. Method: In the training, the treadmill was set to have a inclination of 10 degrees, and the subjects were trained for 20 minutes a day, 3 times a week, for 2 weeks. %MVIC(muscle power) of rectus femoris, vastus medialis oblique, vastus lateralis and erctor spinae were measured with surface EMG, and KODI and VAS were used to measure the subject's level of pain. Results: Quadriceps femoris showed relatively higher average electromyogram rates than that before training(p<.05). Vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis also showed higher average electromyogram rates, but no significant change in them was noted. Erector spinae showed higher average electromyogram rates than that before training(p<.05). The average points of VAS and KODI clearly decreased(p<.05). Conclusion: Strengthening Quadriceps femoris seems to be efficient for relieving lower back pain in this study.

      • 유치원교사의 활동유형별 비계설정 분석

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the scaffolding type which early childhood teachers use, and the scaffolding aspects of activity by the type, focused on group discussion, science, and arts. The subjects of this study were five-year-old 3 classes, which were observed by 3 teachers who have similar scholarship and career. To analyze scaffolding distribution and type, Tharp and Gallimore(1988)' six standards were used. The results of this study were as follwing: First, Feeding-back was the most distributed scaffolding type which the teachers used in group discussion. Question, instruction, cognitive structure, and contingency management were in the following, and no modeling was showed. Second, in science activity, question among all of the scaffolding type was the highest distributed, and feeding-back, instruction, cognitive structure, contingency management, and modeling were in the following. Third, in arts activity, feeding-back among all of the scaffolding type was the highest distributed, and question, instruction, modeling, contingency management, and cognitive structure were in the following. Finally, distribution of the scaffolding type by activities was no difference as feeding-back and question used the most in all of the activity. Also, in proportion of the scaffolding type by activities, modeling was used the most in arts activity, contingency management in arts activity, feeding-back in all of the activity, and instruction in science activity and also in arts activity. And question was used the most in science activity, and cognitive structure was used the most in group discussion and also relatively high in science activity.

        CTX-M형 ESBL 생성 비장티푸스성 살모넬라의 특성

        Background: Extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Salmonella have been increasingly reported worldwide. ESBL-producing Salmonella is of particular concern since children cannot be treated with quinolones. This study was conducted to determine the phenotypic and genetic characteristics of ESBL-producing Salmonella in a tertiary hospital. Materials and Methods: Four clinical ESBL-producing isolates of non-typhoidal Salmonella were collected during 2001 to 2009. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by disk diffusion test and VITEK-II system. ESBL production was tested by ESBL phenotypic confirmatory test. TEM, SHV, CTX-M1, CTX-M2, CTX-M8, and CTX-M9 type ESBL genes were detected by PCR amplification, and PCR products were subjected to direct sequencing Results: Phenotypic confirmatory test showed that 4 of the 300 non-typhoidal Salmonella isolates were ESBL-producing: 3 S. Enteritidis and 1 S. Typhimurium. All 4 isolates were recovered during the past 1 year period. All 3 S. Enteritidis harbored CTX-M-15, while the S. Typhimurium harbored CTX-M-14. All CTX-M-15-producing S. Enteritidis isolates showed resistance both to cefotaxime and ceftazidime, while the CTX-M-14-producing S. Enteritidis were resistant only to cefotaxime. Conclusions: ESBL-producing nontyphoidal Salmonella has emerged recently and the type of ESBL has switched from TEM and SHV to CTX-M.

      • 生長調節物質 處理가 고추品種의 生育 및 基他特性에 미치는 影響

        A series of experiments were undertaken to find out effects of several plant growth regulators on the growth and other factors in several cultivars of pepper (Capsicum spp.). Major results can be summarized as follows. 1. Paclobutrazol greatly reduced the shoot elongation and, in general, the higher the concentration, the severe the growth inhibition. 2. Soil treatment of uniconazole was most effective in retarding the shoot elongation. However, the plants treated with uniconazole also exhibited dark green foliage and late flowering. 3. Plant treated with CCC exhibited early flowering, good fruit set, and early fruit pigmentation. 4. SADH sprayed at 5,000 to 10,000 ppm was effective in reducing the plant size suitable for attractive pot plants. 5. MH treatment completely inhibited the elongation of main shoot, but not the growth of axillary shoots. 6. The growth retarding effect of paclobutrazol and uniconazole was proven to persist much longer than other chemicals for a single spray treatment.

        일부 지방대학 흡연 남자대학생과 비흡연 남자대학생의 혈청 및 식이 Ca, P섭취 수준 및 혈압의 비교 연구

        This study was performed to observe the levels of serum and dietary Ca and P, and blood pressure in rural university male students(smoker: 35 persons, non smoker: 32 persons). Three-day dietary record and blood samples were collected for measurements of the Ca and P levels of dietary intake and serum. The results were as follows : 1) There were no significant differences between smokers and non-smokers in terms of height, weight, and BMI. 2) Mean blood pressures on smokers and non-smokers were 131.33/93.75㎜Hg, 119.37/80. 62㎜Hg, respectively. Blood pressure of smokers was higher than that of non-smokers(p<0.05). 3) There were no significant difference between smokers and non-smokers in calcium, phosphorus, and Ca/P ratio of dietary intake and serum. The results of this study suggest that non-smoking education programs for smokers including the information on the desirable food habits for prevention of hypertension should be developed.

      • 다발성 골수종에서 저용량 thalidomide, cyclophosphamide, dexamethasone (TCD) 요법의 효과

        Background and Objectives : The immunomodulatory drug thalidomide can inhibit angiogenesis and induce apoptosis in experimental models. It can also induce marked and durable response in newly diagnosed myeloma patients. Thalidomide has been used at doses ranging from 200 to 800 mg with significant toxicity. No data are available on the impact of low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone as initial therapy for myeloma patients. Design and Methods : To address this issue, newly diagnosed myeloma patients were treated with 50 mg/day thalidomide continuously and cyclophosphamide 150 mg/m², days 1-4 and dexamethasone 20 mg/m², days 1-5 and day 15-19, every month. Between October 2005 and October 2006, 14 patients (median age 54.5 years) were treated with low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone. Results : After a minimum of two cycles of treatment, 5 patients (55.5%) showed a partial remission. After four cycles of treatment, 10 patients (83.3%) showed a partial remission (n=6) and complete remission (n=4). After a median follow-up of 15.4 months, 1 year overall survival rate was 82.0%. Thalidomide was well tolerated without serious toxic effects. Conclusions : The combination of low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone demonstrates favorable response rate and 1 year overall survival rate in newly diagnosed myeloma. Severe toxicities were not seen with this combination.

      • 생쥐 뇌조직 체외배양법을 활용한 향산화제의 향독성효과에 관한 연구

        In an effort to establish an in vitro model of Parkinson's disease (PD), we prepared slice cultures of midbrain from newborn mouse. The slice section containing substantia nigral region was cultured for 10days. The striatal culture was grown to preserve the distribution of interneurons with minimal contamination of any other brain tissue. Using this explant culture containing both glial cells and nitro-striatal dopamine neurons, the protective effect of antioxidant pineal hormone and melatonin on 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) -induced loss of the dopamine neurons was investigated. MPTP selectively damaged dopaminergic neurons, as indicated by immunoblot and immunohistochemistry for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and tyrosine hydroxylase, the marker enzymes for glial and dopaminergic neurons, respectively. Twenty-four-hour treatment of MPTP (50 μM) in the explant culture induced 37% loss of dopaminergic neurons while no apparent damage was observed in glial region. Type B monoamine oxidase (MAO-B) that resides in glial cells, produces free radicals during catecholamine metabolism and also oxidizes MPTP to its active form, MPP+, was activated by 2.2 times after MPTP treatment. Melatonin was able to recover both the dopaminergic neuronal loss and the elevated MAO-B activity level fully to the untreated control level. Similar observation was made bur the co-treatment of vitamin E with MPTP, suggesting the generation of oxygen radical species by MPTP. On behalf of pursuing molecular mechanisms of Parkinsonism, the data illustrate the proposed mechanism of MPTP-induced dopaminergic cell death ; namely, MPP+ that is processed by MAO-B in glial cells is taken up avidly by dopaminergic neurons and causes a toxic effect at least partly, if not mostly, through oxidative stress. The culture system, therefore, can serve as an experimental model of PD in which the putative neuroprotective effects of antioxidants can be investigated. This model is also useful for screening novel drugs and growth factors without a massive sacrifice of animals, and ultimately for developing neuroprotective therapies.
