Productivity of Korean partial reduplication

The present study describes the productivity of Korean partial reduplication in terms of “type frequency” rather than “token frequency”. A comprehensive investigation of the partially reduplicated forms listed in A Reverse Dictionary of Modern Korean and an experiment of Korean native speakers’ intuition about the productivity of Korean partial reduplication were conducted. Then, the results of the experiment were compared with those of the analysis of the dictionary data to see what differences exist between them. Korean partial reduplication occurred more frequently in the experiment than in the dictionary data. The results of the dictionary analysis showed that Korean partial reduplication does not seem to be productive, whereas the results of the experiment showed that Korean partial reduplication does not seem to be unproductive. It is clear that partial reduplication is more productive in Koreans’ intuition than in the dictionary data.
Watt-Hour Metering Characteristics at Scott Transformer in AC Electric Railway Systems

Owing to the consistent increase in accurate analysis issue for energy consumption of the AC electric railway systems, there is controversy about the adequacy of the present watt-hour metering configuration. Due to the unusual load characteristics and facilities, the discussions have not been active. Therefore, in order to achieve more accurate watt-hour metering for AC electric railway system, this paper proposes numerical formulas for watt-hour metering that reflects the highly-varying characteristics of the railway load and the structural characteristics of the Scott transformer. The proposed formulas have been verified by comparison with site-measured data, and a more suitable metering configuration for AC railway system has been proposed.
Hunminjeongeum Consonant Letter System from the Perspective of Writing System

This study investigates the Hunminjeongeum consonant letter system from the perspective of writing system. This study analyzes the shape of the Hunminjeongeum consonant letters and attempts to provide answers to anomalies and irregularities of Hunminjeongeum consonant letters which occur in the processes of modeling, stroke adding, and gemination. The Hunminjeongeum consonant system is simple, since the letters of the other countries, in whole or in fraction, may have been integrated, distilled, and abstracted into basic graphical figures and additional strokes. It is systematic in that additional letters have been derived from basic letters which have been modeled after the speech organs. The Hunminjeongeum consonant letter set is a necessary minimum out of many possible, and the writing system is not only precise and necessary but also concise and sufficient.
Hunminjeongeum Medials and Cardinal Vowels

This study investigates the Hunminjeongeum medials and the Cardinal Vowels from the perspective of writing system. This study has discussed similarities and differences between the Hunminjeongeum medials and the Cardinal Vowels in terms of phonetic, graphical, and philosophical properties. It is shown that the Hunminjeongeum medials are characterized by a triangular vowel space, while the Cardinal Vowels are characterized by a quadrangular structure. Both systems were commonly based on extreme and polar vowels and the vowel space is divided into back and non-back series, with the intervening vowel space (possibly equidistantly) divided. It is interesting that the Hunminjeongeum medials demonstrate a central-to-front series and the Cardinal Vowels have two sets of monophthongs distinguished by lip shape. There was a remarkable similarity in the configuration of the system between the Hunminjeongeum medials and the Cardinal Vowels. It is significant that the Hunminjeongeum medials were invented half millennium earlier than the Cardinal Vowels.
A Formalization of Stress Pattern in Standard Korean

이 논문의 목적은 표준한국어의 강세유형을 Hayes(1995)의 Metrical Stress Theory의 틀내에서 형식화하는 것이다. 표준한국어의 강세 유형에 대해서는 여러 가지 설이 있으나 이 논문에서는 이 현복(1989)의 기술을 분석대상으로 삼았다. 이 현복(1989)에 따르면 한국어의 강세는 단어의 첫 두 음절 중 하나에 온다. 첫 음절이 중음절이면 그 음절에 강세가 오며 그 외의 경우에는 두번째 음절에 강세가 온다. 이와 같은 강세 규칙을 footing의 존재 여부, footing의 반복성, 그리고 footing의 방향을 고려하여 살펴보면 표준한국어의 강세 유형은 "왼쪽 끝에서 시작되는 비반복 footing을 보이는 iamb"이다.
