      • Real-time measurement of cerebral blood flow during and after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation: A near-infrared spectroscopy study

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Objectives</B></P> <P>To confirm the interhemispheric modulation induced by low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the primary motor cortex, real-time regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was assessed using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in the contralateral primary motor cortex (M1) and premotor cortex (PM).</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>Ten right-handed healthy subjects completed two experimental sessions that were randomly arranged for real or sham rTMS session. In the real rTMS session, fNIRS data were acquired from the right M1 and PM area, while the motor hot spot of the left M1 was stimulated with 1Hz rTMS for 1200 pulses with two boosters. In the sham stimulation session, stimulation was delivered with a disconnected coil.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>During the real rTMS session, the concentration of oxyhemoglobin ([oxy-Hb]) in the right M1 increased continuously until the end of the stimulation. These changes lasted for 20min, while the right PM did not show a change in [oxy-Hb] concentration. On the other hand, the concentration of deoxy-hemoglobin ([deoxy-Hb]) decreased continuously in the right M1 and PM during the real rTMS stimulation, and this change lasted for 20min after the stimulation. The sham stimulation did not exhibit any significant change in both [oxy-Hb] and [deoxy-Hb] concentration during or after the stimulation.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>Application of 1Hz rTMS over M1 resulted in changes of rCBF in contralateral M1 and PM, which seemed to constitute a function of interhemispheric modulation of rTMS. The fNIRS data was able to detect this physiological change of neuromodulatory action of rTMS in real-time.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Hz rTMS influenced changes of cerebral blood flow in the unstimulated hemisphere. </LI> <LI> The stimulated M1 influenced the level of oxyhemoglobin in both unstimulated M1 and PM. </LI> <LI> It seemed to constitute a function of interhemispheric modulation of rTMS. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Interhemispheric Modulation of Dual-Mode, Noninvasive Brain Stimulation on Motor Function

        <P><B>Objective</B></P><P>To investigate the effects of simultaneous, bihemispheric, dual-mode stimulation using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on motor functions and cortical excitability in healthy individuals.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Twenty-five healthy, right-handed volunteers (10 men, 15 women; mean age, 25.5 years) were enrolled. All participants received four randomly arranged, dual-mode, simultaneous stimulations under the following conditions: condition 1, high-frequency rTMS over the right primary motor cortex (M1) and sham tDCS over the left M1; condition 2, high-frequency rTMS over the right M1 and anodal tDCS over the left M1; condition 3, high-frequency rTMS over the right M1 and cathodal tDCS over the left M1; and condition 4, sham rTMS and sham tDCS. The cortical excitability of the right M1 and motor functions of the left hand were assessed before and after each simulation.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitudes after stimulation were significantly higher than before stimulation, under the conditions 1 and 2. The MEP amplitude in condition 2 was higher than both conditions 3 and 4, while the MEP amplitude in condition 1 was higher than condition 4. The results of the Purdue Pegboard test and the box and block test showed significant improvement in conditions 1 and 2 after stimulation.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Simultaneous stimulation by anodal tDCS over the left M1 with high-frequency rTMS over the right M1 could produce interhemispheric modulation and homeostatic plasticity, which resulted in modulation of cortical excitability and motor functions.</P>

        More LREs, Better Written Products: L2 Learning through Collaborative Dialogue

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of collaborative dialogues in second language learning as well as the effectiveness of collaborative writing in EFL classrooms for low proficiency learners. This article describes the products and processes of collaborative writing in small groups for six weeks. The participants were eight Korean technical high school students divided into two groups of four. The students’ written products were analyzed by means of fluency, accuracy and complexity. Results showed that the fluency and accuracy of the written texts by the two groups improved significantly. With regard to complexity, the number of T-units increased while that of dependent clauses did not. The learners’ collaborative dialogues during the writing process were examined in terms of language-related episodes (LREs). The amount of the learners’ LREs increased in both groups during the research period. When compared, the amount of LREs and the quality of the written product in each group was positively correlated. The linguistic knowledge that was built up through collective scaffolding was identified in the learners’ subsequent written products. The findings of the present study implicate that more EFL teachers need to consider collaborative writing as an essential part of L2 learning.

      • Design of CoNi alloy/graphene as an efficient Pt-free counter electrode in liquid junction photovoltaic devices

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Co<SUB>x</SUB>Ni<SUB>1-x</SUB> alloys (0≤x≤1) are successfully synthesized and immobilized on a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) surface using the dry plasma reduction method. HRSEM and XPS measurements are used to analyze the morphology and chemical composition of the developed materials. Then, the developed materials are applied as Pt-free counter electrodes (CEs) in liquid junction photovoltaic devices. In order to obtain efficient CEs, the chemical composition of the Co<SUB>x</SUB>Ni<SUB>1-x</SUB>/RGO is controlled through optimizing the volume ratio of the Co and Ni precursors during the synthesizing process. It is found that the highest efficiency was 6.75% for the device using Co<SUB>0.3</SUB>Ni<SUB>0.7</SUB>/RGO CE, which is also higher than those of the devices using Pt CE (6.63%), Co/RGO (6.33%), and Ni/RGO (5.52%). The obtained results can be explained through the optimization of the charge-transfer resistance and diffusion impedance values of the developed materials. The strategy is simple and efficient; thus, it is promising for fabricating cost-effective CE materials for dye-sensitized solar cells.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Bimetallic CoNi nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide are prepared by dry plasma reduction. </LI> <LI> The electrocatalytic activity as well as electric conductivity is significantly enhanced. </LI> <LI> The highest efficiency is recorded from device employed Co<SUB>0.3</SUB>Ni<SUB>0.7</SUB>/reduced graphene oxide counter electrode. </LI> <LI> The strategy is for Pt-free counter electrode in PV-device using bimetallic CoNi nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Correlation of Breast Cancer Incidence with the Number of Motor Vehicles and Consumption of Gasoline in Korea

        While several reproductive and lifestyle-related factors are already well-known as established risk factors for breast cancer, environmental factors have attracted attention only recently. The objective of the current study was to assess the association between the breast cancer incidences in females, the mortality rate and the number of motor vehicles on the one side and the consumption of gasoline which could work as a major source of air pollution at the other side. The breast cancer incidences and the mortality trends were compared with various indices of westernization like dietary patterns or industrialization with 10 years lag of time. Geographical variations with 10, 15 and 20 years lag of time were assessed between the breast cancer incidence in 2010 and the number of motor vehicles as well as the consumption of gasoline. The upward trend of motor vehicle numbers proved to be comparable to those of breast cancer incidence and mortality. However, the consumption of gasoline started to decrease since the mid-1990s. The geographic distribution of motor vehicle numbers and gasoline consumption in 1990 is in a positive correlation with the breast cancer incidence rates in 2010 and the 20-year lag time ($R^2$ 0.379 with the number of motor vehicles and 0.345 with consumption of gasoline). In a linear relationship between the breast cancer incidences in 2010 and the log transformed number of motor vehicles, the log transformed consumption of gasoline in 2000 also showed a positive relationship ($R^2$ 0.367 with the number of motor vehicles and 0.329 with consumption of gasoline). The results of the current study indicate that there may be a positive relation between the number of vehicles, gasoline consumption and the incidence of breast cancer from the aspects of long-term trends and geographical variation.

        Dreaming of an Intact Home Front: Erasing Female Subjectivity through Popular Media Representations of the Vietnam War

        This article examines illusions of an intact home front during and after Korea’s participation in the Vietnam War, with reference to the film Yeongja’s Heydays (1975) and a women’s magazine feature article on a Vietnam War veteran’s wife. These illusions facilitate the framing of both middle- and low-class women within a popular cultural archetype passed down from the film Madame Freedom (1956). The “Vietnam Boom” yielded materialistic gains on the home front under the Park Chung Hee regime. Contrasting this abrupt affluence, media representations continually reproduced the “dangerous woman” image to legitimize gender and class hierarchies. Two themes emerged: sexual objectification of lower-class women and containment of middle-class women’s economic authority and empowerment. I argue that subordinating women in cultural texts obliterates the Vietnam War trauma and renders women a convenient scapegoat for Korea’s volatile socioeconomic problems. Both narratives further imply another stereotype, namely that of deception and betrayal among women. Transforming naïve, chaste Yeongja first into a rebellious, self-destructive, disabled prostitute then into an ideal housewife offers Changsu, the other protagonist in the film, a vicarious proxy for healing his war wounds. This is a key difference between the film and the original novel on which it was based. Meanwhile, the adultery and economic loss of the Vietnam War veteran’s wife are portrayed as the promiscuity and economic inability of a materialistic housewife, underscoring men’s moral integrity and hard work.

        A Population-Based Genomic Study of Inherited Metabolic Diseases Detected Through Newborn Screening

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>A newborn screening (NBS) program has been utilized to detect asymptomatic newborns with inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs). There have been some bottlenecks such as false-positives and imprecision in the current NBS tests. To overcome these issues, we developed a multigene panel for IMD testing and investigated the utility of our integrated screening model in a routine NBS environment. We also evaluated the genetic epidemiologic characteristics of IMDs in a Korean population.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>In total, 269 dried blood spots with positive results from current NBS tests were collected from 120,700 consecutive newborns. We screened 97 genes related to NBS in Korea and detected IMDs, using an integrated screening model based on biochemical tests and next-generation sequencing (NGS) called NewbornSeq. Haplotype analysis was conducted to detect founder effects.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The overall positive rate of IMDs was 20%. We identified 10 additional newborns with preventable IMDs that would not have been detected prior to the implementation of our NGS-based platform NewbornSeq. The incidence of IMDs was approximately 1 in 2,235 births. Haplotype analysis demonstrated founder effects in p.Y138X in <I>DUOXA2</I>, p.R885Q in <I>DUOX2</I>, p.Y439C in <I>PCCB</I>, p.R285Pfs<SUP>*</SUP>2 in <I>SLC25A13</I>, and p.R224Q in <I>GALT</I>.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Through a population-based study in the NBS environment, we highlight the screening and epidemiological implications of NGS. The integrated screening model will effectively contribute to public health by enabling faster and more accurate IMD detection through NBS. This study suggested founder mutations as an explanation for recurrent IMD-causing mutations in the Korean population.</P>

        Research Trends in English Writing: A Semantic Network Analysis

        This study explores the shifting landscape of English writing research from 2001 to 2020, utilizing a large-scale, data-driven methodology. Data from 1495 articles published in Korea over these two decades was collected and preprocessed with the Biblio data collector, then analyzed with Netminer. The approach involved four stages of semantic analysis: frequency, centrality, network, and modularity analyses. The findings highlight dynamic shifts in research focus. While keywords like ‘test’, ‘college students’, ‘vocabulary’, and ‘level-based’ remained consistent, the 2010s saw emerging themes like ‘task’, ‘textbook analysis’, ‘corpus analysis,’ 'peer feedback’, and ‘genre-based approach’. Centrality analysis showed that in the 2000s, alongside ‘sentence’, ‘questionnaire’ held a central position with multiple nodes linked to it. In the 2010s, ‘questionnaire’ persisted as a central theme but was joined by ‘relationship.’ Network maps generated with Spring 2D and PFnet depicted these evolving interconnections. In the second period, ‘feedback’ emerged as a central theme, yet directly connected to only two nodes: ‘error’ and ‘peer feedback.’ Modularity analysis identified six research groups in each period, with the ‘questionnaire group’ being most significant in the 2000s and the ‘peer feedback group’ gaining prominence in the 2010s. This research illuminates the evolving trends in English writing research, underscoring the potential of big data-driven approaches to uncover key insights and patterns.
