Multi-view Display with Hologram Screen using Three-dimensional Bragg Diffraction

Multi-view function is important to three-dimensional displays without dedicated glasses. It is the reason that the observers earnestly desire to change their positions freely. Multi-viewing is also principal to the reality of three-dimensional (3D) image displayed on the screen. The display of projection type has the advantage that the number of viewing points can be easily increased according to the number of projectors. The authors research on multi-view projection display with hologram screen. Powerful directionality of the diffracted beam from hologram screen is required unlike two-dimensional (2D) display. We developed a new method that all diffracted beams satisfied the same Bragg condition and became sufficiently bright to observe the 3D image under usual indoor light. The principle is based on the essential Bragg diffraction in the three-dimensional space. Owing to such three-dimensional Bragg diffraction we achieved an excellent hologram screen that could be multiple reconstructed in spite of single recording. This hologram screen is able to answer arbitrary numbers of viewing points within wide viewing zone. The distortion of 3D image becomes also sufficiently small with the method of dividing the cross angle between illumination and diffraction beam.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARTICLE POOL SIZE IN THE RETICULO-RUMEN AND CHEWING TIME IN SHEEP

Sixteen mature sheep were fed chaffed orchardgrass hay once a day. Jaw movement of the sheep was recorded for 24 hours before slaughter. Four sheep were slaughtered either prior to eating, 2, 8 or 16 hours after the commencement of eating to measure digesta pool size and particle size distribution in the reticulo-rumen. Eating time was restricted to 120 minutes. Rumination time and actual chewing time during rumination increased with time after the meal. Mean dry matter (DM) pool size before and 2 hours after the meal were 1.36 and 2.45 times of DM intake, respectively. The proportion of large particle (>1.18 mm; LP) in the DM ingested during the meal was caculated to be about 70%. The mean DM and LP pool sizes per DM intake and the mean proportion of LP in the DM pool decreased with time after the meal. There were close negative relationships between either DM or LP pool sizes per DM intake and the chewing activities either expressed as time spent rumination, actual chewing time during rumination or total actual chewing time(total of eating time and actual chewing time during rumination). The difference between DM intake and LP pool size were assumed to be LP degradation in the present experiment, and correlated positively with the chewing activities. A large proportion of the digesta load was comprised of small particles, in excess of the daily intake.
Charge Transfer in Iridate-Manganite Superlattices

<P>Charge transfer in superlattices consisting of SrIrO3 and SrMnO3 is investigated using density functional theory. Despite the nearly identical work function and nonpolar interfaces between SrIrO3 and SrMnO3, rather large charge transfer was experimentally reported at the interface between them. Here, we report a microscopic model that captures the mechanism behind this phenomenon, providing a qualitative understanding of the experimental observation. This leads to unique strain dependence of such charge transfer in iridate-manganite superlattices. The predicted behavior is consistently verified by experiment with soft X-ray and optical spectroscopy. Our work thus demonstrates a new route to control electronic states in nonpolar oxide heterostructures.</P>
COMPARISON OF PERFORMANCE OF YOUNG CALVES IN SEVERAL HOUSING SYSTEMS IN THE WINTER OF COLD REGIONS

A total of thirty male Holstein calves were reared outdoors with simple housings or in warmed pens in three experiments conducted in three consecutive midwinters in Hokkaido. Average outdoor air temperatures during the experiments were between -5.3 and $-6.1^{\circ}C$, and average minimum air temperatures were between -9.7 and $-10.6^{\circ}C$. The age of calves at the start of the experiments were $16{\pm}6$ hours. There was no difference in the liquid feed intake, while the solid concentrate (artificial milk) intake by the calves in the simple housing systems (outdoors, calf hutch and open shed) tended to be higher than those in the warmed pen. No significant differences in the daily gain or the monthly development of wither height were observed among housing systems. There were no serious cases of diarrhea. However, coughing was observed in several of the calves reared in the poorly ventilated warmed pens.
Blood Protein Polymorphisms of Native Fowls in Laos

Blood protein polymorphism of fowls in Laos was analyzed by electrophoresis. Blood samples were collected in the area of Viangchan, Louangphrabang and Pakxe. Out of 17 loci, polymorphism was detected at the following seven loci; ES-1, Amy-1, Akp-akp, Akp-2, Alb, Tf and Pas. The other ten loci; Amy-3, LDH, 6-PGD, PGM, PHI, To, MDH, Es-D, Hb-l, Hb-2 were noted to be monomorphic. The proportion of polymorphic loci $(P_{poly})$, the expected average heterozygosity per individual ($\bar{H}$), and the subdivision index $(G_{ST})$ of the native fowl in Laos was $0.412{\pm}0.123$, 0.106 and 0.026, respectively. Genetic distance between native fowls in Laos, Bangladesh, and Nepal was clustered in one group.

Previously we suggested the significance of some of the hymenopteran (Andrenidae, Apidae, and Halictidae) and dipteran (Syrphidae) families in Japanese pear pollination. However, they might contribute differentially to the pollination reflecting their pollination efficiencies. For this study, we investigated the pollination efficiency of three insect pollinator groups at an insect-pollinated Japanese pear orchard: Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Api dae), solitary bees (Hymenoptera), and flies (Diptera). First, we examined the contribution of the insect polli nator groups to the fruit-set ratio of inflorescences. Results indicated that the floral visits of A. mellifera had a positive effect on the fruit-set ratio. Then, for two consecutive years, the numbers of Rosaceae pollen grains deposited on the stigma after a single floral visit by insects were examined. The obtained results were not consistent, but data in one year showed that A. mellifera and Andrena spp. (Hymenoptera: Andrenidae) deposited more pollen grains than Panurginus crawfordi (Hymenoptera: Andrenidae) did. Third, we examined the presence of pollen grains derived from the pollinizer variety among those removed from the body surfaces of the flowervisiting insects. Results indicated the involvement of the three pollinator groups in pollen grain transfer of the pollinizer variety. Finally, we recorded the abundance of flower-visiting insects by walking around the study site. Results demonstrated that flies were observed stably irrespective of temperatures during the survey period, unlike A. mellifera and solitary bees, which exhibited little flower-visiting activity under low temperatures. Results also demonstrated that solitary bees were abundant at the study site in the late flowering period. These results suggest that hymenopterans and dipterans contribute differentially but mutually complementarily to open insect pollination in the Japanese pear orchard.
