      • International Collaboration in Foreign Language Class: A Case Study on Using Online Digital Tools

Ohe,Hye-Gyeong 한국외국어교육학회 2018 한국외국어교육학회 학술대회 자료집 Vol.2018 No.-

This pilot action research is aimed to attempt on how to construct and develop an effective and sustainable international collaborative exchange class model, by holding a collaborative language class with students from the target-language and culture. It further aims to consider how online international exchange classes could affect language and culture learning. From an intercultural language learning perspective, Liddicoat et al. (2003) argued that learners should participate in the social and interactional process actively and positively, which constructs learning, connection and social interaction. Then, how can these principles be applied to classroom activities in foreign language education? This practice, some suggests the use of culture portfolios, while others recommend online intercultural exchanges (Murray and Bollinger, 2001; O’Dowd, 2007; Helm, 2009) which “uses internet technology as a tool to facilitate intercultural communication between classes of learners in different countries” (Helm, 2009:91). In an attempt to investigate how to improve students’ intercultural sensitivity in foreign language classrooms, this research pursued an international collaboration between a Japanese class at Chung-Ang University (CAU) in South Korea and a Korean class at International Christian University (ICU) in Japan by adopting the online intercultural exchange style of practice. This pilot action research revealed positive communicative and intercultural attitudes in all respects because students showed their curiosity and openness towards the target-culture which led to cultural knowledge and skills of interpreting and relating their existing knowledge about their own culture to new input about the target-culture (Byram, 1977). As for the knowledge about target-culture, students have already some degree of knowledge about the target-culture provided by instructors in class and they applied it as leverage in order to absorb new knowledge presented by students from the target-culture. It was, however, found out that even for some cultural facts which are already instructed by teachers in class, they seem to feel differently and even reacted as if they realize or notice or give an attention it for the first time. This observation revealed that language and culture learning can be carried out more efficiently in a social and interactive process that learners reconceptualize with existing knowledge about both their own culture and target-culture through personalized practice and experience.

      • Non-spherical collapse in AdS and early thermalization in RHIC

        Oh, E.,Sin, S.J. North-Holland Pub. Co 2013 Physics letters: B Vol.726 No.1

In the flat space, non-spherical shells collapse to give globular cluster after many oscillations. We show that in anti de Sitter space, they form black holes in one dynamical time. We propose that this is the mechanism of early thermalization in strong quark-gluon plasma in gravity dual. This is traced back to the a remarkable property of AdS: the period in radial motion is amplitude independent in spite of the non-linearity of the equation of motion. We investigate the interaction effect numerically and observe the same qualitative behavior for the attractive forces. For repulsive interactions, particles halt at a small but finite radius for long time due to the specific structure of the bulk AdS propagator. It helps hair creation in the AdS black hole.

      • Removal of ion-implanted photoresists on GaAs using two organic solvents in sequence

        Oh, E.,Na, J.,Lee, S.,Lim, S. New York] ; North-Holland 2016 APPLIED SURFACE SCIENCE - Vol.376 No.-

Organic solvents can effectively remove photoresists on III-V channels without damage or etching of the channel material during the process. In this study, a two-step sequential photoresist removal process using two different organic solvents was developed to remove implanted ArF and KrF photoresists at room temperature. The effects of organic solvents with either low molar volumes or high affinities for photoresists were evaluated to find a proper combination that can effectively remove high-dose implanted photoresists without damaging GaAs surfaces. The performance of formamide, acetonitrile, nitromethane, and monoethanolamine for the removal of ion-implanted ArF and KrF photoresists were compared using a two-step sequential photoresist removal process followed by treatment in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Among the various combinations, the acetonitrile+DMSO two-step sequence exhibited the best removal of photoresists that underwent ion implantation at doses of 5x1013-5x1015 atoms/cm2 on both flat and trench-structured GaAs surfaces. The ability of the two-step process using organic solvents to remove the photoresists can be explained by considering the affinities of solvents for a polymer and its permeability through the photoresist.

      • Overexpression of angiotensin II type 1 receptor in breast cancer cells induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition and promotes tumor growth and angiogenesis

        Oh, E.,Kim, J.Y.,Cho, Y.,An, H.,Lee, N.,Jo, H.,Ban, C.,Seo, J.H. Elsevier Biomedical Press 2016 Biochimica et biophysica acta, Molecular cell rese Vol.1863 No.6

The angiotensin II type I receptor (AGTR1) has been implicated in diverse aspects of human disease, from the regulation of blood pressure and cardiovascular homeostasis to cancer progression. We sought to investigate the role of AGTR1 in cell proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), migration, invasion, angiogenesis and tumor growth in the breast cancer cell line MCF7. Stable overexpression of AGTR1 was associated with accelerated cell proliferation, concomitant with increased expression of survival factors including poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP), as well as extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation. AGTR1-overexpressing MCF7 cells were more aggressive than their parent line, with significantly increased activity in migration and invasion assays. These observations were associated with changes in EMT markers, including reduced E-cadherin expression and increased p-Smad3, Smad4 and Snail levels. Treatment with the AGTR1 antagonist losartan attenuated these effects. AGTR1 overexpression also accelerated tumor growth and increased Ki-67 expression in a xenograft model. This was associated with increased tumor angiogenesis, as evidenced by a significant increase in microvessels in the intratumoral and peritumoral areas, and enhanced tumor invasion, with the latter response associated with increased EMT marker expression and matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) upregulation. In vivo administration of losartan significantly reduced both tumor growth and angiogenesis. Our findings suggest that AGTR1 plays a significant role in tumor aggressiveness, and its inhibition may have therapeutic implications.

Optical characterizations of GaAs-based spin light emitting diodes using Fe3O4 spin injectors

        Oh, E.,Lee, B.W.,Kim, T.S.,Lee, J.M.,Oh, S.J.,Song, J.D. Elsevier 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.5

We fabricated GaAs-based spin-LED (light emitting diode) structures using half-metallic Fe3O4 as spin injectors and measured the circular polarization of the electroluminescence (EL). The circular polarization of the EL due to the spin injection was improved by the low temperature growth of the ferromagnetic layer, compared to the room temperature growth. We also studied the excitation wavelength dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra and the variation of the EL spectra with increasing current. The excess carrier dependence of the EL peaks was found to be different from that of the PL peaks, which was explained by the carrier injection into the buffer layer.

Transition Metal-Catalyzed and -Promoted Reactions via Carbene and Vinylidene Complexes Generated from Alkynes

Ohe, Kouichi Korean Chemical Society 2007 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.28 No.12

The transition metal-induced in situ generation of carbene complexes from alkynes having a carbonyl or imino group as a nucleophilic functionality has been investigated. These reactive carbenoid species are generated with high atom efficiency through a 6-endo-dig cyclization mode based on the electrocyclization of vinylidene complexes or a 5-exo-dig cyclization mode in π-alkyne complexes, and have been found to serve as versatile intermediates in catalytic carbene transfer reactions. Highlighted and reviewed in this account are the generation and preparation of pyranylidene, furylcarbene, pyrrolylcarbene, and vinylcarbene complexes and their application to [3,3]sigmatropic rearrangement of acylcyclopropylvinylidenes, catalytic cyclopropanation reactions, [2,3]sigmatropic rearrangement or condensation reactions via ylides, ring-opening and substitution reactions with heteroaromatic compounds, and catalytic isomerization of oligoynes.
