Let $\U^+$ be the class of analytic functions $f$ such that $\frac{z}{f(z)}$ has real and positive coefficients and $f^{-1}$ be its inverse. In this paper we give sharp estimates of the initial coefficients and initial logarithmic coefficients for $f$, as well as, sharp estimates of the second and the third Hankel determinant for $f$ and $f^{-1}$. We also show that the Zalcman conjecture holds for functions $f$ from $\U^+$.
Deferrable Energy/Commodity Purchase and Consumption Policy under Stochastic Prices

This paper considers the problem of determining the cost-optimal policy of the task of purchasing or consuming a certain commodity, such as energy, within a given number of time steps. The price of the commodity in each time slot is randomly chosen from a known probability distribution and made known at the beginning of the slot. This problem is of renewed interest and is rigorously examined in a novel way. We consider different discrete sets of choices for the price-taker, in the simplest case whether to act to the full extent possible, or to pass. For each case we derive the optimal policy for independent price processes, show that it is a threshold strategy, and prove monotonicity properties for the thresholds and costs. We prove that it is more economical to accomplish the task in one time step than in several. The optimal policy is computed in closed-form for i.i.d. price processes with uniform distribution.

Emulsification followed by freezing and thawing cycles was applied to produce poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microparticles and to simultaneously immobilize activated sludge. Activity of the obtained microparticles (~400 μm in diameter) was evaluated in glucose syrup solutions and heat-pretreated wastewater from a starch factory by measurements of permanganate index (CODMn) reduction. The reaction followed first-order kinetics, revealing slight mass transfer limitations in PVA microparticles as determined from the kinetic rate constant that was ~35% lower than that in the freely suspended activated sludge culture. Yet, efficiency of the microparticles increased almost five-fold in a laboratory airlift bioreactor operating either in batch or continuous regimes. Over 19 days of operation under high organic loadings in the industrial wastewater (~100 kgCOD m−3 d−1), PVA microparticles (12.4% volume fraction) remained active and induced a decrease of over 90% of biodegradable CODMn at the hydraulic retention time of 8 h.

In Yugoslavia, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is one of the important national health problem, but no vaccine has been used to prevent HFRS. Since first HFRS case in 1952, sporadic cases of HFRS occurred every year and over 4,000 registered cases with 1∼16% mortality so far. We performed a prospective, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of Hantavax against HFRS in 3,900 healthy adults living in the endemic areas of Yugoslavia. 1,900 people were given 0.5 ml of Hantavax subcutaneously twice at one month interval and a booster shot at one year after. For controls other 2,000 healthy people were given 0.5 ml of physiolosical saline as a placebo. We investigated HFRS cases in both the vaccinated and nonvaccinated groups by monitoring the program for patient registration in the areas from 1996 to 1998, and the effect of vaccine was analyzed epidemiologically. No confirmed case of HFRS was observed among 1,900 Hantavax vaccinees, while 20 confirmed cases were observed among 2,000 nonvaccinated control group. There were no remarkable side effects among the vaccinees either locally or in general after inoculation of the vaccine. The Hantavax vaccine showed statistically significant protective efficacy against HFRS among Yugoslavian people.

Gastrointestinal metastases from invasive lobular breast cancer are uncommon with the stomach and small intestines being the most common metastatic sites. Peritoneal and rectal metastases are very rare and only rarely occur as the first manifestation of disease. We herein report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with abdominal carcinomatosis as a first sign of invasive lobular breast carcinoma (ILC). Identifying the most important immunohistochemical markers for ILC: gross cystic disease fluid protein 15, estrogen and progesterone receptors enabled a correct diagnosis. After a six year disease-free period, relapse occurred with severe obstruction due to rectal metastasis from lobular breast carcinoma. Since there was no widespread metastatic disease, surgery with concomitant hormonal therapy was performed.
