        Numerical analysis of under-designed reinforced concrete beam-column joints under cyclic loading

        In the present study, exterior beam-column sub-assemblage from a regular reinforced concrete (RC) building has been considered. Two different types of beam-column sub-assemblages from existing RC building have been considered, i.e., gravity load designed (‘GLD’), and seismically designed but without any ductile detailing (‘NonDuctile’). Hence, both the cases represent the under-designed structure at different time frame span before the introduction of ductile detailing. For designing ‘NonDuctile’ structure, Eurocode and Indian Standard were considered. Non-linear finite element (FE) program has been employed for analysing the sub-assemblages under cyclic loading. FE models were developed using quadratic concrete brick elements with embedded truss elements to represent reinforcements. It has been found that the results obtained from the numerical analysis are well corroborated with that of experimental results. Using the validated numerical models, it was proposed to correlate the energy dissipation from numerical analysis to that from experimental analysis. Numerical models would be helpful in practice to evaluate the seismic performance of the critical sub-assemblages prior to design decisions. Further, using the numerical studies, performance of the sub-assemblages with variation of axial load ratios (ratio is defined by applied axial load divided by axial strength) has been studied since many researchers have brought out inconsistent observations on role of axial load in changing strength and energy dissipation under cyclic load.

        Influence of surface chemical properties of nanocrystalline CeO2 on phosphate adsorption and methyl-paraoxon decomposition

        Nanocrystalline cerium oxide (CeO2) was used as an effective catalytic and adsorption material for thesafe removal of selected phosphorus compounds. Several CeO2 samples were prepared by a simple coprecipitationmethod with subsequent annealing at temperatures between 400–600 C, and their sorptionability for inorganic phosphates was studied together with their ability to decompose the organophosphoruscompound - paraoxon methyl (PO) - with the goal to find the relations between the sorptionand catalytic activity of the prepared materials. It was found that a complex set of physical and chemicalcharacteristics (surface area, crystallite size, pore volume/size, the number of surface hydroxyl groups)plays a crucial role in the governing of adsorption ability and catalytic activity. From the dependenceof some characteristics (i.e., the number of surface hydroxyl groups, BET surface area, crystallite size)on the annealing temperature and their mutual correlations, the model describing the degradation oforganophosphate compounds on the surface of cerium oxide was deduced.

        Assessment of the Antibacterial Behavior of Polyester Fabric Pre-treated with Atmospheric Discharge Plasma

        Polyester (PES) fabrics were pre-treated with atmospheric discharge plasma, and the surface properties, chemicalcomposition, and physical changes on the surfaces of the PES fabrics were investigated. The hydrophobic recovery of theplasma-modified surface during aging of the PES fabrics treated with plasma was also investigated. The glycerin contactangles were determined along with the chemical composition changes in the PES fabric using X-ray photoelectronspectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and iodometric analyses. The physical changes in the topography androughness of the plasma-modified PES were studied using scanning electron microscopy and nanoindentation. The relationbetween the hydrophilicity and hydroperoxide concentration on the surface of the plasma-treated PES fabrics was analyzedand the antibacterial behavior of the fabrics with respect to selected two bacterial strains was monitored.

        Microvascular flow imaging to differentiate focal hepatic lesions: the spoke-wheel pattern as a specific sign of focal nodular hyperplasia

        Microvascular flow imaging (MVFI) is an advanced Doppler ultrasound technique designed to detect slow-velocity blood flow in small-caliber microvessels. This technique is capable of realtime, highly detailed visualization of tumor vessels without using a contrast agent. MVFI has been recently applied for the characterization of focal liver lesions and has revealed typical vascularity distributions in multiple types thereof. Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) constitutes an important differential diagnosis of malignant liver tumors. In this essay, we provide iconographic documentation of the MVFI appearance of FNH and other common solid liver lesions. Identifying the typical patterns of vascularity, including the spoke-wheel pattern with MVFI, can expedite the diagnosis, spare patients from unnecessary procedures, and save costs.

        Temporal and aspectual characteristics of verba sentiendi et cogitandi in Czech

        The article deals with verba sentiendi et cogitandi in Czech, specifically with verbs vidět [see], slyšet [hear], cítit [smell/feel/sense], vědět and znát [know]. The framework of the study is the notion of TAM space, which is constituted by interrelations of time, aspect and modality factors in establishing communication construal. The article focuses on interplay of two of this factor triple, namely aspect and time. It builds on two distinctions: stative events (states) vs. dynamic events (activities processes), and distinction between morphological aspect (i.e., aspect given by the morphological make-up of the verb) vs. aspectual construal of the communication the verb is part of. The latter of the distinctions is motivated by the fact that in Czech morphologically perfective verbs may constitute an imperfective communication construal and vice versa. It is demonstrated that the above verbs behave in Czech in regard to TAM differently than other verbs: they do not constitute aspectual »perfective vs. imperfective« pairs contrary to, for instance, telic verbs; in respect to aspect and tense they result in different communication construals in collocation with temporal expressions and various verbal tenses than other verbs. The article provides explanation of these specifics. All conclusions and explanations are corpora based.

        Modal characteristics of verba sentiendi et cogitandi in Czech

        The article deals with verba sentiendi et cogitandi (VSC) in Czech, specifically with verbs vidět [see], slyšet [hear], cítit [smell/feel/sense], vědět, znát [know] and rozumět [understand]. The basic concept is an event, the construal of which is construed by the interaction of aspectual, temporal and modal factors. The interplay of the first two factors of this factor triple has been dealt in Starý Kořánová (2022), this article focuses on modality. The following features are characteristic for the VSC verbs: - The use of VSC predicates reflects the fact that the respective sensory-cognitive activities (i.e, activities referred to by these verbs), are not subject to the experiencer's will - We can ascertain this both by a collocation test” collocation of VSCs with the adverbs záměrně, pečlivě, do not occure, and by the fact that VSCs do not form a negative imperative or by the fact that VSCs transitive construction are not of resultative nature. - Ability and its concrete manifestation can be expressed in some cases in Czech by different lexemes. - The VSC verbs form a particular modal construction for expressing external conditions of perception (i.e., modality external possibility), namely be+infVSC where VSCs are mostly MI verbs - Ability is of two kinds, basic (S1) and performance ability (S2). Basic ability is manifested through/by its performance. The morphological imperfectives of VSCs express basic ability. - The potential for a performance ability construal is in the general sense MPs, but is very limited for VSC uvidět, uslyšet, and ucítit/pocítit. Of the morphologically perfective VSC predicates, the MP poznat is the most involved in events with the ability construal.

        Aspectual Polysemy and Homonymy in Czech

        The article builds on Starý Kořánová (2021) focusing on aspectual polysemy and homonymy of Czech verbs. From the point of view of polysemy/homonymy, verbs we deal with can be classified in four groups: Group 1: verbs with the verbal base -létat [fly] with various prefixes Group 2: verbs with verbal bases -padat [fall] and -sedat [get seated, sit down] with various prefixes Group 3: verbs with verbal bases -vážet and -vážit/-vázat Group 4: predominantly verbs of motion with the prefix po-. The data are presented in tables which include the following simple verbal forms: infinitive, present, imperative, preterit participle, and passive participle. The issues of aspectual homonymy/polysemy are closely related to the issue of which factors contribute to the aspectual interpretation of an utterance. A list of examples of such factors is provided. To identify the aspectual value of an utterance, it is not enough to consider the morphology of the verb only. The aspectual construal of an utterance is not determined by the morphology of the verb alone, but rather by the way in which it is used.

        Trends in Isolation and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Enteropathogenic Bacteria in 2011-2019 at a Korean Tertiary Care Hospital Compared with Data in the Preceding Reports

        Background: Environmental sanitation plays a significant role on the prevalence ofenteropathogenic bacteria. This study aimed to determine the trends in the prevalence andantimicrobial resistance profiles of enteropathogenic bacteria from 2011 to 2019. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed using data from stool cultures ofSalmonella spp., Shigella spp., Plesiomonas shigelloides , Yersinia spp., Vibrio spp., andCampylobacter spp. Samples were obtained between 2011 and 2019 from SeveranceHospital. Antimicrobial susceptibility profile was determined using the disk diffusion methodfor nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) and Campylobacter spp., following the Clinical andLaboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Results: The number of specimens obtained for stool culture increased significantly from13,412 during the period of 1969–1978, to 48,476 over the past nine years (2011–2019),whereas the ratio of positive specimens decreased significantly from 1,732 (12.9%) to 449(0.9%). The proportion of samples positive for Salmonella Typhi decreased from 472 (93.6%,1969–1978) to 4 (1.5%, 2011–2019), whereas the proportion of NTS increased from 14 (2.8%,1969–1978) to 261 (96.7%, 2011–2019). Among all the enteropathogenic bacteria isolated,Shigella spp. accounted for 60.0% (1,039) isolates from 1969 to 1978, but only 1.6% (7) from2011 to 2019. Campylobacter was the second most prevalent enteropathogenic bacteria,accounting for 29.4% isolates (132). Among the NTS strains isolated from 2016 to 2019, theirsusceptibility rates to ampicillin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim were 51.1% and 85.2%,respectively. Additionally, the susceptibility rate of Campylobacter to ciprofloxacin was 15.8%. Conclusion: The prevalence of Salmonella Typhi and Shigella spp. significantly decreased,whereas those of NTS and Campylobacter spp. increased. Therefore, continuous monitoringof ciprofloxacin-resistant Campylobacter spp. is of vital importance.
