Sweet's syndrome: a cutaneous harbinger of ovarian carcinoma

Sweet's syndrome, or acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis, is a condition characterized by fever, neutrophilia, erythematous skin lesions, and a dermal infiltrate consisting predominantly of mature neutrophils on histology. Sweet's syndrome is a reactive phenomenon and should be considered a cutaneous marker of systemic disease, including underlying malignancy. We present a case of a 56-year-old woman who presented with vague abdominal symptoms and a tender, erythematous rash on her extremities. Biopsy of her skin lesions revealed Sweet's syndrome. A work-up for malignancy eventually demonstrated a pelvic mass and carcinomatosis, and a diagnosis of advanced-stage papillary serous ovarian carcinoma was subsequently made. In postmenopausal women who present with Sweet's syndrome, a comprehensive evaluation for malignancy is indicated. In women with a known diagnosis of cancer, Sweet's syndrome may manifest in the detection of persistent or recurrent disease.
Optimization of a laser plasma x-ray source for ultrafast x-ray absorption spectroscopy

<P>We present optimization of laser plasma x-ray experimental conditions for ultrafast x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on broad range of transition metal oxides. First, the x-ray flux generated from a laser plasma source was optimized with an emphasis on the Bremsstrahlung by investigating the influence of the angle of the incidence of laser beam on a Cu tape target. The x-ray flux emitted in both the front and transmitted side of the target was found to be optimal at the incident angle of 15 similar to 25 degrees. Moreover the manipulation of the Bremsstrahlung peak energy by the laser focus distribution was discussed. In addition to the source optimization, we present a scheme to find the time-delay zero position in a pump-probe experiment together with a normalization scheme for x-ray source fluctuations. As a feasibility check, we present the transmitted spectra of two materials, Ni and NiO.</P>

Coherent diffraction surface imaging in reflection geometry

<P>We present a reflection based coherent diffraction imaging method which can be used to reconstruct a non periodic surface image from a diffraction amplitude measured in reflection geometry. Using a He-Ne laser, we demonstrated that a surface image can be reconstructed solely from the reflected intensity from a surface without relying on any prior knowledge of the sample object or the object support. The reconstructed phase image of the exit wave is particularly interesting since it can be used to obtain quantitative information of the surface depth profile or the phase change during the reflection process. We believe that this work will broaden the application areas of coherent diffraction imaging techniques using light sources with limited penetration depth.</P>

<P>Surfactant-stripped, nanoformulated naphthalocyanines (nanonaps) can be formed with Pluronic F127 and low temperature membrane processing, resulting in dispersed frozen micelles with extreme contrast in the near infrared region. Here, we demonstrate that nanonaps can be used for multifunctional cancer theranostics. This includes lymphatic mapping and whole tumor photoacoustic imaging following intradermal or intravenous injection in rodents. Without further modification, pre-formed nanonaps were used for positron emission tomography and passively accumulated in subcutaneous murine tumors. Because the nanonaps used absorb light beyond the visible range, a topical upconversion skin cream was developed for anti-tumor photothermal therapy with laser placement that can be guided by the naked eye.</P>
