Glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor in adults. Temozolomide (TMZ) is an FDAapproved drug used to treat this type of cancer. Cinnamaldehyde (CIN) is a derivative of cinnamon extract and makes up 99% of it. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro combined effect of CIN and TMZ on human glioblastoma multiforme T98G cell line viability. In this study, we used 3-(4,5 dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tertazolium bromide (MTT) method to evaluate the extent of IC50, acridine orange, Giemsa and Hoechst staining to evaluate the manner of apoptosis and the Western blotting method to examine the expression change of apoptotic proteins. Our results show that TMZ has an inhibitory effect on CIN when both used in combination at concentrations of 300 and 100 μM (P<0.05) and has a cytotoxic effect when used alone at the same concentrations (P<0.05). The western blotting result showed that TMZ at concentrations of 2,000 and 1,000 μM significantly increased Bax expression and decreased Bcl2 expression (P<0.05), indicating that TMZ induced apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway. However, CIN had no effect on Bax and Bcl2 expressions, thus causing apoptosis from another pathway. Also, the Bax:Bcl2 expression ratio at concentrations combined was lower than that for TMZ 1,000 μM and higher than that for CIN 150 and 100 μM (P<0.05), which confirms the inhibitory effect of TMZ on CIN. From the present study, we conclude that TMZ in combination with CIN has an inhibitory effect on increasing the cytotoxicity rate.

Objectives Leishmania parasites are the causative agents of leishmaniasis. The Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) form of the disease is fatal if not treated in most cases. This study examined the epidemiological aspects of VL in two southwest counties of Iran. Methods This was a retrospective study of hospitalized patients with a laboratory confirmation of VL from Larestan and Ghiro-Karzin Counties. Results For Larestan county, a decline in the incidence of VL has been observed from 2004 to 2015. Significantly more males (n = 14) than females (n = 6) were infected with VL in this county (p < 0.05), >95% of cases in children under 5 years of age. In Ghiro-Karzin county, the results were similar to a decline in VL infection from 2004 to 2015, and slightly more males (n = 14) than females (n = 11). Similarly, the majority of the patients infected with VL were children under 5 years old (88%). Conclusion The results from this study indicate that although the incidence of VL infection has reduced over time, VL was more prevalent in boys under 5 years old, suggesting that more attention to controlling the parasite and its vector are required.
Curcumin and Silibinin Inhibit Telomerase Expression in T47D Human Breast Cancer Cells

Background: Telomerase has been considered as an attractive molecular target for breast cancer therapy. The main objective of this work is to assess the inhibitory effects of silibinin and curcumin, two herbal substances, on telomerase gene expression in breast cancer cells. Materials and Methods: For determination of cell viability tetrazolium-based assays were conducted after 24, 48, and 72 h exposure times and expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase gene was measured with real-time PCR. Results: Each compound exerted cytotoxic effects on T47D cells and inhibited telomerase gene expression, both in a time-and dose-dependent manner. The mixture of curcumin and silibinin showed relatively more inhibitory effect on growth of T47D cells and hTERT gene expression as compared with either agent alone. Conclusions: These findings suggest that cell viability along with hTERT gene expression in breast cancer cells could be reduced by curcumin and silibinin.

Objective: Sperm vitrification leads to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can damage the functional parameters of sperm. The present study aimed to investigate the antioxidant effect of Nigella sativa extract on motility, plasma membrane function, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), DNA damage, and intracellular ROS production. Methods: A total of 20 sperm samples were used. Samples were divided into six experimental groups, including groups with aqueous extract from N. sativa seeds at concentrations of 1% to 6%, a cryopreserved control group, and a fresh control group. Results: Statistical analysis showed significantly higher total sperm motility at concentrations of 3% to 6% than in the vitrified semen control group. Additionally, progressive motility and all motion characteristics at all concentrations were significantly higher than in the vitrified semen control group. The presence of N. sativa seed extract also improved the quality of the sperm parameters assayed in all experimental groups (1%-6%; intracellular ROS production, DNA damage, MMP, and sperm membrane function) compared to the control group. Conclusion: Higher concentrations of N. sativa led to improvements in all sperm parameters and sperm quality. These findings indicate that N. sativa seed extract is effective for improving the quality of sperm after vitrification.
Crystallization behavior of tantalum and chlorine co-substituted hydroxyapatite nanopowders

The crystallization behavior of tantalum and chlorine co-substituted hydroxyapatite nanopowders wasexamined. Results showed that combined processing by mechanical alloying and annealing is conduciveto the structural changes and crystal growth. A series of nanocrystalline tantalum and chlorine cosubstitutedhydroxyapatite (Ta/Cl–HA) with different dopant contents were synthesized as a result ofthe progressive mechanochemical reaction. During the subsequent annealing, crystallization of the asmilledpowders occurred, leading to a significant increase in the fraction of crystalline phase. TEMimages revealed that the crystallized and doped nanopowders composed of crystalline nanoneedles withan average size of 61 26 nm.

Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation is an effective technique that is used for development and testing of control systems while some of the control loop components are simulated in a proper environment and the other components are real hardware. In a conventional HIL simulation, the hardware is an electronic control unit which electronic control signals are communicated between the hardware and the software. But, HIL simulation of a mechanical component requires additional transfer systems to connect the software and hardware. The HIL simulation can achieve unstable behavior or inaccurate results due to unwanted time-delay dynamic of the transfer system. This paper presents the use of Smith predictor for time-delay compensation of transfer system in the HIL simulation of an electro-hydraulic fuel control unit (FCU) for a turbojet engine. A nonlinear auto regressive with exogenous input (NARX) neural network model is used for modeling and predicting the FCU behavior. The neural model is trained by Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and the training and validation sets are generated using the amplitude modulated pseudo random binary sequence (APRBS). The consistency of the experimental real-time simulation and off-line simulation shows the applicability of the presented method for mitigating the effect of unwanted dynamic of the transfer system in the HIL simulation

Poorly crystalline nano-sized tricalcium phosphate powders were successfully synthesized by two distinct mechanochemical reactions. Results revealed that the structural features as well as morphological characteristics were influenced by the chemical composition of reagents. The obtained nanopowders exhibited average sizes about 21 and 28 nm. According to the TEM/SEM observations, the synthesized powders showed cluster-like structures composed of spheroidal particles with a mean size of about 23 nm and ellipsoidal particles with an average size of about 30 nm. The proposed method as a new vision in powder technology can be used for mass production of nanostructured tricalcium phosphates.
Thermal Mechanisms of Grain Refinement in Steels: A Review

Thermal mechanisms of microstructural refnement in steels were reviewed. These include thermal cycling, martensiteprocess, and static recrystallization (SRX), in which the dominant stage of microstructural refnement is governed by anannealing treatment of a deformed or an undeformed material. Recent progress in grain refnement by thermal cycling forthe body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic, and dual phase (DP) steels was introduced. The application of the cold rollingand subsequent annealing of a martensite starting structure (martensite process) for grain refnement of low-carbon and DPsteels was reviewed. The formation and reversion of strain-induced martensite in metastable austenitic stainless steels andtheir efects on the microstructural evolutions were critically discussed. Moreover, the repetition of the martensite processand its limitations were explained. Important fndings on the SRX of ferrite and austenite for grain refnement as well as therecrystallization kinetics were presented. Finally, the concepts of controlled rolling for grain refnement and the interaction ofaustenite recrystallization and strain-induced precipitation in microalloyed steels during thermomechanical processing werealso reviewed. This short overview presents the opportunities that the conventional and innovative processing routes canofer for grain refnement of steels.

In the present investigation the effects of milling parameters (time, atmosphere, and media) andchemical composition of raw materials on the mechanochemical synthesis of nanocrystallinehydroxyapatite (n-HAp) were studied. For a comparative study of the mechanically activated samplesversus thermally treated specimen (natural origin), n-HAp was also produced via annealing of bovinebone at 800℃ for 2 h. The gained powders exhibited average sizes about 32 and 27 nm under airatmosphere, and about 32 and 34 nm under argon atmosphere. TEM images confirmed the formation ofn-HAp with various morphologies under different experimental conditions.
