        The flora of Mt. Taebong area, located in Cheonan city, Chungcheognam-do, Korea, was investigated from 9 May 2003 to 4 October 2003. As a result, the flora was consisted of 83 families, 298 genera and 337 taxa. Among them, 179 taxa(53.4%) were belonged to 9 families, and Composite and Gramineae were the biggest two groups. Endemic plants in Korea were 6 taxa, specific plants ware 13 taxa, rare and endangered plants were 2 taxa, naturalized plants were 17 taxa in this area. This area according to the distributional at pattern of korean vascular plants belonged to Middle province. Analysis tables were made to know the distributional, morphological, phenological and practical characteristics of the flora. Modal characteristics of the flora were: climbing plants(22 taxa), herb(252 taxa), and wood(85 taxa). Among vascular plants of this area, deadly poison plants were 2 taxa, mediocre poison plants ones 18 taxa and mild poison plants ones 8 taxa. Among vascular plants of this area, edible sources were 179 taxa, medical ones 263 taxa, industrial ones 23 taxa, fiber ones 23 taxa, fodder ones 10 taxa, green manure ones 2 taxa, oil ones 6 taxa, fragrant ones 72 taxa and dye ones 33 taxa

      • Extended Culture of Bone Marrow with Granulocyte Macrophage-Colony Stimulating Factor Generates Immunosuppressive Cells

        <P>Bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BM-DCs) are generated from bone marrow (BM) cells cultured with granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) for a week. In this study we investigated the effect of duration on the BM culture with GM-CSF. Within several months, the cells in the BM culture gradually expressed homogeneous levels of CD11c and major histocompatibility complex II on surface, and they became unable to stimulate allogeneic naïve T cells in mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR). In addition, when the BM culture were sustained for 32 wk or longer, the BM cells acquired ability to suppress the proliferation of allogeneic T cells in MLR as well as the response of ovalbumin-specific OT-I transgenic T cells in antigen-dependent manner. We found that, except for programmed death-ligand 1, most cell surface molecules were expressed lower in the BM cells cultured with GM-CSF for the extended duration. These results indicate that BM cells in the extended culture with GM-CSF undergo 2 distinct steps of functional change; first, they lose the immunostimulatory capacity; and next, they gain the immunosuppressive ability.</P>

        An integrated silicon pressure sensor has been designed, fabricated and tested. The signal conditioning circuits were designed to include calibration and temperature compensation of output voltage through trimming of diffusion and ion-implanted resistors. Before trimming of resistors, the compensation parameters such as pressure sensitivity, temperature coefficient of pressure sensitivity, temperature coefficient of piezoresistors and pressure sensitivity of piezoresistors were measured. Then offset voltage, span, and temperature coefficients of offset voltage and span were calibrated by trimming of resistors. The measured output voltage met our design specification and simulation value above room temperature. But, the measured output voltage at -30°C deviated from our design specification and simulation value because the offset voltages were found to vary randomly as a function of temperature.

        An investigation was conducted on the water environmental factors at five sites in summer of the Namyangho from 29 May to 31 August 2003. As result, the water temperature was ranged 21.0-25.9℃, highest at site 5 in upsteam. The value of pH was stabilized, its was ranged 8.01-10.27. The dissolved oxygen(DO) was ranged 4.72-15.82 ㎎/l. The turbidity was ranged 13-64 NTU. The conductivity and salinity were 0.148-1.050 ㎳/㎝ and 0.00-0.04%, respectively. The conductivity and salinity were highest in 29 May and revealed similar pattern, also closely related to between.

        일 도시 고등학생의 음주동기와 음주문제

        Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate drinking motives and the drinking-related problems of Korean high school students at a city in Jeonbuk province. Methods : There were 657 students from two academic and two vocational high schools at J city in Jeonbuk province. The sample was collected using a stratified sampling method and the data was collected from June 30th to July 16th 2003. The study instrument used to examine drinking motive was a 20.item summated scale (Cronbach's α = .95) and for drinking-related problems was an 18 item summated scale (Cronbach's α = .91). The data was analyzed using SPSS/PC+ by percentage, χ2.test, t-test and correlations. Results : 1. Drinking experience: Among the high school students, 74.3% of them had drinking episodes. Female students started drinking later (χ2 = 12.857, p = .002) and had more drinking friends (χ2 = 7.785, p = .020) than males. Vocational school students drank more frequently (χ2 = 32.138, p = .001), had more heavy drinking episodes (χ2 = 40.370, p = .001). 2. Drinking motives & Drinking-related problems: The mean score of drinking motives was 31.2 ± 11.12 out of 80 and that of drinking-related problems was 21.8 ± 5.85 out of 72 points. Neither score were stronger was significantly different according to gender and grade. On the other hand, both drinking motives (t = .4.077, p = .001) and drinking-related problems (t = .3.423, p = .001) were stronger in vocational school students than in academic school students. The correlation between drinking-related characteristics and problems were weak (from r = .286 to r = .520) but the correlation within the subcategories of drinking motives was high such as between enhancement and coping (r = .822) and enhancement and social motives (r = .822). Conclusion : The majority of Korean high school students start to drink during their junior high school days. Drinking motives and drinking-related problems were not serious but the drinking motives and the drinking-related problems are stronger among vocational school students. As a result, school-based health education and counseling programs should focus on solving drinking motives than on drinking-related problems.

        Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) is one of the fatal prion diseases. Diagnosis of CJD is mainly based on clinical symptomatology of established criteria, characteristic electroencephalogram, specific cerebrospinal fluid protein measurement, prion protein gene analysis, prion protein isoform detection, and neuropathology. But spongiform change of brain pathology is the only definitive diagnosis of CJD. Clinical symptomatology of CJD includes behavioral disturbances, progressive dementia, cerebellar, pyramidal, and extrapyramidal signs. Most patients show progressive myoclonic jerks that involve either limbs or the entire body. The approximate incidence of CJD is 1 per million and occurs as sporadic, familial and iatrogenic forms. Variant CJD has the strong possibility of cross species transmission between human and cow. It has some differences in clinical and pathological aspects from sporadic CJD. Protease resistant prion protein of scrape isoform may lead to diverse neuronal death in CJD. Recent advannces in CJD reveal that apoptosis, proinflammatory cytokine expression and oxidative stress may play an important role of CJD pathogenesis. There areseveral therapeutic trials in CJD but no therapeutic regimensshow effective results. Although there is much progression about CJD in recent days, a lot of things still remained to be reveled.

        The purpose of this study is to clarify the historic transition of the prospects on Haeundae dalmaji hill. Dalmaji hill is well known for a character of configuration on the ground with the scene of the sea. We will infer that how did it change the prospects of Dalmaji hill's sea through the analyzing of the preset situation and location of building on the hill. (1) We investigated the stories of the building, the history, the business condition. (2) We collect the twenty four view points which is able to have seascape on the hill, being easily approaching to the road, and condition of changing the building. (3) We clarified the transition of seascape prospect and considered the characteristics of the six types from which were divided the condition of seascape prospect.

        Structural basis for the ATP-independent proteolytic activity of LonB proteases and reclassification of their AAA+ modules.

        <P>Lon proteases degrade defective or denature proteins as well as some folded proteins for the control of cellular protein quality. There are two types of Lon proteases, LonA and LonB. Each consists of two functional components: a protease component and an ATPase associated with various cellular activities (AAA+ module). Here, we report the 2.03 -resolution crystal structure of the isolated AAA+ module (iAAA+ module) of LonB from Thermococcus onnurineus NA1 (TonLonB). The iAAA+ module, having no bound nucleotide, adopts a conformation virtually identical to the ADP-bound conformation of AAA+ modules in the hexameric structure of TonLonB; this provides insights into the ATP-independent proteolytic activity observed in a LonB protease. Structural comparison of AAA+ modules between LonA and LonB revealed that the AAA+ modules of Lon proteases are separated into two distinct clades depending on their structural features. The AAA+ module of LonB belongs to the -H2 & Ins1 insert clade (HINS clade)- defined for the first time in this study, while the AAA+ module of LonA is a member of the HCLR clade.</P>

        슬랙스용 소재의 태와 감성 이미지가 선호도에 미치는 영향

        This research was designed to investigate the effect of hand and sensibility image on the preference to textiles for slacks. 85 subjects majored in fashion design were surveyed and 10 kinds of fabrics used as specimen at each season. Factor analysis, t-test, Pearson correlation, Regression were used for statistical analysis by SPSS WIN 11.0. The results of this study were as follows: 1. In Spring - Fall season, 5 factors were extracted as hand factor and 3 factors as sensibility factor of textiles for slacks. 2. 5 factors were extracted as hand factor and 3 factors as sensibility in Summer. 3. 6 factors were extracted as hand factor and 3 factors as sensibility in Winter season. 4. There were significant differences according to sex between hand factor and sensibility image in Spring * Fall. 5. There were significant correlations between hand factor and sensibility image in Spring * Fall, Summer and Winter. 6. Hand and sensibility image effected on the preference to textiles for slacks in Spring . Fall, Summer and Winter.

        Genetic and Phenotypic Characterization of Rice Backcrossed Inbred Sister Lines of Saltol in Temperate Saline Reclaimed Area

        Saltol is one of the most well-known quantitative loci (QTLs) for salinity tolerance in rice. It has been used to develop highly tolerant rice varieties in saline and coastal areas in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Africa. However, the functional activity of Saltol is not well known, and the molecular marker application of readily developed linked markers in Saltol has not always been successful in the rice breeding programs for salinity tolerance improvement. Interestingly, two BC<sub>2</sub>F<sub>9</sub> sister backcrossed inbred lines (BILs), which have been developed by marker-assisted backcrossing utilized the linked markers of Saltol to improve the salinity tolerance of MS11 (a temperate japonica growing in tropical condition). The BILs showed very different phenotypic and stress tolerance, although both contained the Saltol QTL. The genomic similarity of the two BILs was 73%, and we have identified the genomic sites of different genic constitutions between the lines utilizing background genotyping. The stress response of the two BILs showed difference in survival rate, grain yield under highly saline field condition, and SPAD, SES in hydroponic conditions. MS11-SaltolA showed salinity tolerance through Na<sup>+</sup>/K<sup>+</sup> homeostasis with relatively high K<sup>+</sup> ion uptake and low Na<sup>+</sup> ion uptake in the seedling stage. Further genomic analyses with whole genome resequencing is ongoing to study on gene interactions. The developed highly tolerant MS11-SaltolA can be used as an improved donor in rice molecular breeding for high salinity tolerance.
