D-Amphetamine Causes Dual Actions on Catecholamine Release from the Rat Adrenal Medulla

The present study was designed to examine the effect of d-amphetamine on CA release from the isolated perfused model of the rat adrenal gland, and to establish its mechanism of action. D- amphetamine (10∼100μM), when perfused into an adrenal vein of the rat adrenal gland for 60 min, enhanced the CA secretory responses evoked by ACh (5.32⁓10<SUP>3</SUP> M), excess K<SUP></SUP> (5.6⁓10<SUP>2</SUP> M, a membrane depolarizer), DMPP (10<SUP>4 </SUP>M, a selective neuronal nicotinic N<SUB>n</SUB>-receptor agonist) and McN-A-343 (10<SUP>4 </SUP>M, a selective M<SUB>1</SUB>-muscarinic agonist) only for the first period (4 min), although it alone has weak effect on CA secretion. Moreover, d-amphetamine (30μM) in to an adrenal vein for 60 min also augmented the CA release evoked by BAY-K-8644, an activator of the dihydropyridine L-type Ca<SUP>2</SUP> channels, and cyclopiazonic acid, an inhibitor of cytoplasmic Ca<SUP>2</SUP> ATPase only for the first period (4 min). However, in the presence of high concentration (500μM), d-amphetamine rather inhibited the CA secretory responses evoked by the above all of secretagogues. Collectively, these experimental results suggest that d-amphetamine at low concentrations enhances the CA secretion from the rat adrenal medulla evoked by cholinergic stimulation (both nicotininc and muscarinic receptors) as well as by membrane depolarization, but at high concentration it rather inhibits them. It seems that d-amphetamine has dual effects as both agonist and antagonist at nicotinic receptors of the isolated perfused rat adrenal medulla, which might be dependent on the concentration. It is also thought that these actions of d-amphetamine are probably relevant to the Ca<SUP>2</SUP> mobilization through the dihydropyridine L-type Ca<SUP>2</SUP> channels located on the rat adrenomedullary chromaffin cell membrane and the release of Ca<SUP>2</SUP> from the cytoplasmic store.

Background and Purpose: Dementia subtypes, including Alzheimer’s dementia (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), pose diagnostic challenges. This review examines the effectiveness of 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography (18F-FDG PET) in differentiating these subtypes for precise treatment and management. Methods: A systematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines was conducted using databases like PubMed and Embase to identify studies on the diagnostic utility of 18F-FDG PET in dementia. The search included studies up to November 16, 2022, focusing on peer-reviewed journals and applying the gold-standard clinical diagnosis for dementia subtypes. Results: From 12,815 articles, 14 were selected for final analysis. For AD versus FTD, the sensitivity was 0.96 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.88–0.98) and specificity was 0.84 (95% CI, 0.70–0.92). In the case of AD versus DLB, 18F-FDG PET showed a sensitivity of 0.93 (95% CI 0.88-0.98) and specificity of 0.92 (95% CI, 0.70–0.92). Lastly, when differentiating AD from non-AD dementias, the sensitivity was 0.86 (95% CI, 0.80–0.91) and the specificity was 0.88 (95% CI, 0.80–0.91). The studies mostly used case-control designs with visual and quantitative assessments. Conclusions: 18F-FDG PET exhibits high sensitivity and specificity in differentiating dementia subtypes, particularly AD, FTD, and DLB. This method, while not a standalone diagnostic tool, significantly enhances diagnostic accuracy in uncertain cases, complementing clinical assessments and structural imaging.

To produce a potent antidementia β-secretase inhibitor from a mushroom, the β-secretase inhibitory activities of various mushroom extracts were determined. Methanol extracts of Lentinula edodes exhibited the highest inhibitory activity (40.1%). The inhibitor was maximally extracted when a fruiting body of L. edodes was treated with 50% methanol at 40℃ for 24 h.

Application of Bloom’s taxonomy to formative assessment in real-time online classes in Korea

Purpose: This study aims to design that using formative assessment as an instructional strategy in real-time online classes, and to explore the application of Bloom’s taxonomy in the development of formative assessment items.Methods: We designed the instruction using formative assessment in real-time online classes, developed the items of formative assessment, analyzed the items statistically, and investigated students perceptions of formative assessment through a survey.Results: It is designed to consist of 2–3 learning outcomes per hour of class and to conduct the formative assessment with 1–2 items after the lecture for each learning outcome. Formative assessment was 31 times in the physiology classes (total 48 hours) of three basic medicine integrated. There were nine “knowledge” items, 40 “comprehension” items, and 55 “application” items. There were 33 items (31.7%) with a correct rate of 80% or higher, which the instructor thought was appropriate. As a result of the survey on students’ perceptions of formative assessment, they answered that it was able to concentrate on the class and that it was helpful in achieving learning outcomes.Conclusion: The students focused during class because they had to take formative assessment immediately after the learning outcome lecture. “Integration of lesson and assessments” was maximized by solving the assessment items as well as through the instructor’s immediate explanation of answers. Through formative assessment, the students were able to utilize metacognition by learning what content they understood or did not understand. Items that consider Bloom’s taxonomy allow students to remember, understand, and apply to clinical contexts.

<P>In contrast to typical magnetic energy generators that use electromagnetic induction, which are bulky and have low generation efficiency under small magnetic fields at low frequency, magneto-mechano-electric (MME) generators utilizing the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling effect and magnetic interactions are considered promising candidates. MME generators will serve as a ubiquitous autonomous energy source converting stray magnetic noise to useful electric energy for applications in wireless sensor networks (WSN) for the Internet of Things (IoT) and low-power-consuming electronics. The key component in a MME generator is the ME composite consisting of piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials, which elastically couples the electric and magnetic behaviour of the respective constituent. Here, we report a MME generator consisting of a crystallographically oriented Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O3piezoelectric single crystal macro-fibre composite and a highly textured magnetostrictive Fe-Ga alloy, which exhibits an exceptionally high rectified DC output power density of 3.22 mW cm<SUP>−3</SUP>. The large energy generation in this structure is ascribed to the coupling between the strong anisotropic properties of the piezoelectric single crystal fibres and textured Fe-Ga magnetostrictive alloy. A smart watch with IoT sensors was driven by the MME generator under a 700 μT magnetic field.</P>

Lipoma is one of the most common benign tumors of soft tissue which tends to be left untreated due to unremarkable clinical features and its property of slow growth. It comes to clinical attention only when it causes concern of malignancy because of inordinate size or is perceived as faults in need of cosmetic removal and consequently the incision line is, frequently long and may result in high risk of intra- and postoperative complications such as hematoma and hypertropic scars. So it requires cosmetically acceptable and convenient methods for treatment of lipoma, especially located in the exposed area. The liposuction was tried to get less complications and smaller incision line. But for deep seated variants of lipoma they tend to be less well-circumscribed and often have thick fibrous septa around the lipoma, simple liposuction showed some limitations. So we tried the new liposuction method using arthroscopic shaver for 5 patients having lipomas larger than 5 cm in diameter. The surgery was performed with arthroscopic shaver system equipped with a motorized blade rotating in the suction cannula and emulsifying the lipoma tissue for easy aspiration. The aspirated material was collected and examined histopathologically to rule out the evidence of malignancy. Lipomas were removed completely without any remarkable complications, and no recurrence was seen till three years after surgery. The new method was easier to operate and took less operation time and left only small incision line.(Korean J Dermaton 2003;41(10) : 1347~1350)
