        Mitochondria-Targeting Peptoids

        <P>Mitochondria-specific delivery methods offer a valuable tool for studying mitochondria-related diseases and provide breakthroughs in therapeutic development. Although several small-molecule and peptide-based transporters have been developed, peptoids, proteolysis-resistant peptidomimetics, are a promising alternative to current approaches. We designed a series of amphipathic peptoids and evaluated their cellular uptake and mitochondrial localization. Two peptoids with cyclohexyl residues demonstrated highly efficient cell penetration and mitochondrial localization without significant adverse effects on the cells and mitochondria. These mitochondria-targeting peptoids could facilitate the selective and robust targeted delivery of bioactive compounds, such as drugs, antioxidants, and photosensitizers, with minimal off-target effects.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • Exploring the key services and players in the smart car market

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The traditional role of cars as a means of transport is now expected to undergo major changes as a result of the emerging smart car industry, whereby connection to the Internet can not only improve traffic safety by enabling self-driving but also entertain passengers. Under these circumstances, it is important to explore the killer services that are expected to be in high demand by consumers and keystone players in the emerging market. This study identifies the promising services from a consumer's perspective using analytic hierarchy process analysis and examines experts' views on which industries and firms, as keystone players, are expected to provide the competitive killer services in the market. The results show that the service that consumers find the most important is driving assistance, followed by infotainment and Internet of Things hubs. Meanwhile, the experts rank the importance of industrial player as in the order of Information Technology device manufacturers, followed by platform providers, automobile manufacturers, and network providers, while at the company level, the rank is in the order of Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, Naver, and SK Telecom, respectively. These findings show that consumers regard smart cars as futuristic vehicles, yet continue to emphasize their conventional value as a means of transport, while the experts expect that among the various industry players, IT companies are most likely to enable the concept of the smart car to become a reality.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Evaluates relative importance of services unique to smart cars. </LI> <LI> Driving assistance service ranked highest followed by infotainment and IoT hubs. </LI> <LI> Explores firms and industries expected to lead the smart car market. </LI> <LI> Samsung Electronics ranks highest, followed by Hyundai Motor, Naver, SK Telecom. </LI> <LI> Industries rank in order of IT equipment, platform, automobile, network provider. </LI> </UL> </P>

        The Effect of the Yoga Participating Senior Citizens’ Exercise Flow on the EEG Following the Color Lighting Environment

        The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of yoga exercise within the color lighting environment on the senior citizens’ exercise flow and the electroencephalogram (EEG). In this study, a yoga exercise program was conducted once a week for 19 senior citizens living in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. As for the experimental design of the study, utilizing a within-subject design, it was conducted by using a randomized crossover trial based on the 2 types of experiments such as by treating them with the color lighting environment and treating them with the white lighting environment for the lighting environment for the yoga participants. A one week interval was placed so as not to influence the measurement results during the measurement. As for the EEG test, measurement was taken by attaching 2 channels to the frontal lobe on the right and left, and as for the exercise flow, the exercise flow measurement consisted of the 5 sub factors of Clear Goals, Sense of Control, Loss of Self-Consciousness, Transformation of Time, and Autotelic Experience were used. The EEG test was conducted before and after the yoga exercise, and the exercise flow questionnaire was required to be prepared after the yoga exercise. The results of this study have demonstrated significant changes in the Theta wave, Alpha wave, and the Gamma wave following the exercise flow in the color lighting environment. To the contrary, the Low-Beta waves, Middle-Beta waves, and the High-Beta waves demonstrated no significant changes. Hence, it can be concluded that the exercise flow following the color lighting environment of the yoga participating senior citizens increases the Alpha waves and the Theta waves, while reducing the Gamma waves. Such results of this study are significant in that they present the basic data on the physiological responses of the yoga studies for which color lighting is applied in Korea in the future.

        Antihyperlipidemic Effect of Ginsenoside Rg1 in Type 2 Diabetic Mice

        Ginsenoside Rg1은 인삼에서 분리한 약물학적인 활성을 가지는 물질이다. 본 연구는 Rg1이 제2형 당뇨병 모델 동물에서 혈당과 지질대사에 유익한 효과를 가지는지를 확인하기 위한 목적으로 수행되었다. 10주령의 db/db 마우스에 Rg1을 10 ㎎/㎏ 농도로 15일간 경구투여한 결과 공복혈당이 감소하였고, 포도당 내성이 개선되었다. 특히 혈중 중성지방과 유리지방산이 유의적으로 감소하였고 혈중 HDL-콜레스테롤이 증가되었다. 또한 chimeric GAL4-PPARα receptor 활성 프로모터를 활성화시켰고 PPARα gene인 CPT-1 (carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1)과 ACO (acyl-CoA oxidase)의 발현을 증가시켰는데 이것으로 Rg1의 지질대사 개선이 PPARα 활성에 의한 지방산 산화에 의한 것임을 확인할 수 있었다. 모든 결과를 종합해 볼 때, Rg1은 제2형 당뇨병과 관련된 고혈당증과 고지혈증에 유용한 효과를 가짐을 확인하였다. Ginsenoside Rg1 is a pharmacologically active component isolated from ginseng. The goal of this study was to clarify the beneficial effects of Rg1 on glucose and lipid metabolism in diabetic animals (db/db mice). To accomplish this, ten week old db/db mice were administered 10 ㎎/㎏ of Rg1 for 15 days. Rg1 did not influence the weight of db/db mice when compared with vehicle-treated db/db mice. The administration of Rg1 lowered fasting plasma glucose, and improved glucose tolerance. Importantly, Rg1 markedly reduced both plasma triglyceride and free fatty acids, and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations in db/db mice. Rg1 activated promoter activity of chimeric GAL4-PPARα reporter and increased expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) target genes such as carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 (CPT-1) and acyl-CoA oxidase (ACO), which are involved in fatty acid oxidation. These findings indicated that improvement of lipid profiles by Rg1 may be associated with increased fatty acid oxidation via PPARα activation. Taken together, these results suggest that Rg1 could have beneficial effects for controlling hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia associated with type 2 diabetes.

        Dynamic resolution of N-methyl pseudoepherine α-bromo esters in nucleophilic substitution reaction with various heteroatom nucleophiles has been successfully used for the asymmetric preparation of α-heteroatom substituted carboxylic acid derivatives up to 99 1 er. Best results are obtained when α-bromo esters are allowed to equilibrate to the thermodynamic ratios before the addition of the nucleophile. We have shown that the chiral auxiliary, N-methyl pseudoephedrine can be removed by acidic or basic alcoholysis without detectable racemization.

        본 연구에서는 OBS 광 센서를 이용하여 측정된 광파 후방산란강도의 부유사농도 변환을 위한 실내 실험이 진행 중에 있다. 본 논문에서는 특수 제작된 부유사 농도 관측센서 검보정 챔버 내 OBS 거치 및 실험 방법 등이 제시되며, 모래와 고령토 시료 각각에 대한 OBS 값과 부유사 농도 측정값이 한 예로 제시된다.

        Comparative Analysis of the Exercise Flow, EEG and PPG Following the Senior Citizens’ Yoga Participation Experience

        The purpose of this study was to examine and understand the effect on the exercise flow, electroencephalogram (EEG), and the photoplethysmography (PPG) following the senior citizens’ yoga participation experience. The subjects of this study were 19 senior citizens living in City I who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study, who were classified into those who are experienced in yoga (n=9) and those who were not experienced in yoga (n=10). The yoga exercise program lasted 60 minutes. After the yoga exercise program was completed, the EEG and PPG were measured, and the exercise flow survey questionnaires were prepared. As for the data processing method, the SPSS 23.0 Version for Windows was used to conduct the independent t-test, and the following results were secured. First, there are differences in the exercise flow depending on whether they were experienced in the yoga participation, yet they were not significant. Second, there were significant differences in L-Beta, M-Beta, H-Beta, Gamma, and the brain health indicators of Brain Stress and Brain Score (p<.05), depending on the experience of the senior citizens participating in yoga. Third, there were significant differences in HRV-INDEX, parasympathetic neuronal activities, and autonomic neuronal activities (p<.05), depending on the experience of the senior citizens participating in yoga. As a result of this study, it was apparent that there were differences in the EEG and PPG depending on whether the senior citizens were experienced in the yoga participation, and such results can be expected to serve as the basic data for the research of the ways to participate in the sustainable exercise along with the intent to exercise.

        Effectiveness of group cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness in end-stage renal disease hemodialysis patients

        Background: Many patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis (HD) experience depression. Depression influences patient quality of life (QOL), dialysis compliance, and medical comorbidity. We developed and applied a group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program including mindfulness meditation for ESRD patients undergoing HD, and measured changes in QOL, mood, anxiety, perceived stress, and biochemical markers. Methods: We conducted group CBT over a 12-week period with seven ESRD patients undergoing HD and suffering from depression. QOL, mood, anxiety, and perceived stress were measured at baseline and at weeks 8 and 12 using the World Health Organization Quality of Life scale, abbreviated version (WHOQOL-BREF), the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II), the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Biochemical markers were measured at baseline and after 12 weeks. The Temperament and Character Inventory was performed to assess patient characteristics before starting group CBT. Results: The seven patients showed significant improvement in QOL, mood, anxiety, and perceived stress after 12 weeks of group CBT. WHOQOL-BREF and the self-rating scales, BDI-II and BAI, showed continuous improvement across the 12-week period. HAM-D scores showed significant improvement by week 8; PSS showed significant improvement after week 8. Serum creatinine levels also improved significantly following the 12 week period. Conclusion: In this pilot study, a CBT program which included mindfulness meditation enhanced overall mental health and biochemical marker levels in ESRD patients undergoing HD.
