Globalization, together with Structural Adjustment Programs in India, have led to many changes in the way people perceive their work opportunities and livelihoods. This paper examines the processes of globalization and the idea of livelihood from the perspective of women nurses in Delhi. These women have migrated from the state of Kerala and have specific strategies regarding these processes, which they believe will take care of their future prospects in their profession and lives. They look at opportunities of emigration and migration as opening new doors to the global market. They look at these as ‘life strategies,’ to borrow a term from Marie Percot (2006), rather than a livelihood plan. Do they recognize any linkages between their individual empowerment and the broader structural programs mentioned above? How do they perceive their role and agency against the broader, structural changes that are widely called globalization and the subsequent changes in concept, pattern and practices of livelihood? Their choice of profession and the almost certain next step of migration to places within or outside India are expected to provide them with economic independence and self-reliance. Nonetheless, their identity as workers in a new social space is not a total break with their conventional sex role expectations. Their new roles can act as a double burden and add to the reinforcement of traditional roles that actively nullifies the power and strength derived from earning one’s own livelihood and moving towards empowerment and autonomy. This paper looks at the gender implications of these factors at work in the lives of women nurses who are migrant workers. The study also discusses an interesting reallocation of resources among young nurses. Younger nurses want to invest their earnings in training themselves in technologically equipped hospitals and to access training centers for passing international English language tests and nursing examinations. They take all these decisions after considering various factors and what from their standpoints they think would alter their life chances favorably.
