By using ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD), carbon nitride coatings whose thickness were less than 100nm were coated on Si substrate, Friction and wear properties against SiC pin were investigated with a pin-on-disk tester. Experimental results show that wear of CNx coatings and SiC pin were dramatically reduced by Cnx coating, even if coating thickness was less than 100nm. Thicker CNx coating provided better wear resistant at high sliding speed.

New evaluation method of surface energy with an ESEM was proposed. In this method, condensed liquid droplets were used for the measurement of contact angle. Two different contact angles with water and diiodemethane droplets on the specimen provided surface energy of the specimen. The surface energy obtained with this method is the same as the values by the conventional method with micro-syringe. Therefore, this method can use for the evaluation of the surface energy. Contact angles of water droplets are independent of the diameter of the droplets. On the other hand, contact angles of diiodemethane decrease with diameter of that if the diameter is more than 100μm.

Infrared reflectance spectroscopy was applied to the GaN/AlGaN triangular stripes grown on a Si(111) substrate by selective area metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. Because of the triangular shape of the GaN, which worked itself as a prism, we could detect the local vibration modes of Si-N, N-H$_2$, Si-H, and Si-O bonds near the GaN/Si interface with high sensitivity.

We conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure in 19,608 subjects of east Asian ancestry from the AGEN-BP consortium followed up with de novo genotyping (n = 10,518) and further replication (n = 20,247) in east Asian samples. We identified genome-wide significant (P < 5 ? 10<SUP>??8</SUP>) associations with SBP or DBP, which included variants at four new loci (ST7L-CAPZA1, FIGN-GRB14, ENPEP and NPR3) and a newly discovered variant near TBX3. Among the five newly discovered variants, we obtained significant replication in the independent samples for all of these loci except NPR3. We also confirmed seven loci previously identified in populations of European descent. Moreover, at 12q24.13 near ALDH2, we observed strong association signals (P = 7.9 ? 10<SUP>??31</SUP> and P = 1.3 ? 10<SUP>??35</SUP> for SBP and DBP, respectively) with ethnic specificity. These findings provide new insights into blood pressure regulation and potential targets for intervention.

Motile bacteria sense changes in the concentration of chemicals in environments and respond in a behavioral manner. This behavioral response is called chemotaxis. Bacterial chemotaxis can be viewed as an important prelude to metabolism, prey-predator relationships, symbiosis, infections, and other ecological interactions in biological communities. Genome analysis reveals that a large number of environmental motile bacteria possess a number of genes involved in chemosensing and chemotatic signal transduction. Pseudomonas aeruginosa has a very complex chemosensory system with more than 20 chemotaxis (che) genes in five distinct clusters and 26 chemoreceptor (methyl-accepting chemotaxis protein [mcp]) genes. Among the 26 MCPs of P. aeruginosa, nine have been identified as MCPs for amino acids, inorganic phosphate, oxygen, ethylene, and volatile chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, whereas 3 MCPs were demonstrated to be involved in biofilm formation and biosynthesis of type IV pilus. Six che genes are essential for chemotactic responses, while genes in Pil-Chp cluster and Wsp cluster are involved in type IV pilus synthesis and twitching motility and biofilm formation, respectively. P. aeruginosa, with its complex chemotaxis system, is a better model microorganism for investigating ecological aspects of chemotaxis in environmental bacteria than Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, which possess a relatively simpler chemotaxis system.
