The scoured and undyed 100% cotton yarn (2/30's) were weft-knitted from 13 different stitches with 7 and 12 machine gauge using a V-bed knitting machine. Structure of knit fabrics was characterized and analyzed: fabric length and width, fabric count, fabric weight per area, and fabric thickness were measured. The thickness of the full cardigan 2✕2 and 4✕4 rib presented the highest values due to usage of tuck stitch. The fabric width of 4✕4, 1✕1, and 2✕2 rib stitches were the narrowest group resulted in relaxation shrinkage after knitting. Also 4✕4rib stitch gave the highest value in fabric density and weight. Fabric stitch and structure were well co-related each other, which give the changes of fabric appearance and properties.

Numerous evidences support the pathogenesis that M. pneumonias pneumonia is associated with cell-mediat-ed immune reaction. We report 2 cases of severe M. pneumoniae pneumonia in previously healthy sisters, who were both admitted during an epidemic of M. pneumoniae pneumonia. The elder sister, who was 16 years old, was admitted with M. pneumoniae pneumonia. She showed no response to treatment with clarithroycin and levo-floxacin, and eventually progressed to severe ARDS, requiring mechanical ventilation. After treatment with hydrocortisone (200 mg/day), there were rapid improvements in clinical manifestations and chest radiographic findings. The younger sister, who was 14 years old, was admitted 10 days later, Presenting with fever but no pneumonic lesions on chest radiograph. Just like her sister, the infection showed no response to clarithromycin. Fever persisted and pneumonic consolidation with mild pleural effusion was noticed in the left lower lobe on the 5th hospital-day. After treatment with oral prednisolone (1 mg/kg), she showed rapid defervescence and on the 8th hospital day, no pneumonic lesions were detectable on chest radiograph. Given the fact that the pathogenesis of pneumonia and extrapulmonary manifestations in M. pneumoniae infection is immune-mediated, an immuno-suppressive therapy would be validated for selected patients with M. pneumoniae infections.
Effects of Feeding Different Types of Germanium on It's Accumulation in Egg Yolk

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementing different types of Germanium on the yolk germanium accumulation of laying hens. Fourty five laying hens of 38 weeks old were individually replaced in cage with 3 types of Germanium addition at 0, 50, 100, 200 (ppm) of the diet for 2 weeks, respectively. Germanium accumulation on the yolk supplemented with type 1 and 2 Germanium were increased in a dose-dependent manner. However, type 3 Germanium(200 ppm) supplementation showed no consistency and was lower than other groups. Also, fatty acid composition of yolk with type 2 Germanium supplement (200 ppm) was also lower in unsaturated fatty acid than other groups. Therefore, this results indicated that type 2 Germanium supplement might provided a useful type in the yolk accumulation compared with other types of Germanium supplementation in laying hens diets.

Coptidis rhizoma (huanglian) is an herb that is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine that has recently been shown to possess anticancer activity. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the anticancer effects of this herb is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the anticancer activity of a combination of CR extract and arsenic trioxide, as well as the apoptotic pathway associated with its mechanism of action in human lung cancer H157 cells. Combined treatment of H157 cells with CR extract and arsenic trioxide resulted in significant apoptotic death. In addition, combined treatment with CR extract and arsenic trioxide acted in concert to induce a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (${\Delta}{\Psi}$), the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria, and an increase in the expression of pro-apoptotic p53 and Bax protein, which resulted in activation of caspases and apoptosis. CR extract combined with arsenic trioxide also increased the lipid peroxidation, mRNA expression of DR4 and DR5 and caspase-8 activity. These data indicate that combined treatment with CR extract and arsenic trioxide enhanced apoptotic cell death in H157 cells through diverse pathways, including mitochondrial dysfunction and death receptors, particularly DR4 and DR5. Thus, this treatment may be an effective from of chemotherapy.

Dodam formula (Dodam) has been used for neurodegenerative disease in Oriental medicine. Dodam is capable of protecting diverse kinds of cells from damage caused by a variety of toxic stimuli. In the present study, we investigated the underlying protective mechanism of Dodam on rotenone-induced cytotoxicity in rat neuroblastoma Neuro-2A cells. Treatment with Neuro-2A cells with rotenone caused the loss of cell viability, and condensation and fragmentation of nuclei, which was associated with the elevation of ROS level, and lipid peroxidation, the increase in Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. Rotenone induced mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by mitochondrial membrane potential loss and cytochrome-c release. These phenotypes induced by rotenone were reversed by pretreatment with Dodam. Our results suggested that major features of rotenone-induced neurotoxicity are partially mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, and that Dodam markedly protects Neuro-2A cells from oxidative injury. These data indicated that Dodam might provide a useful therapeutic strategy in treatment of the neurodegenerative diseases caused by oxidative injuries.
