Objective: Hyperketonemia remains a major metabolic issue of serious milk production and a major health concern in early lactation cows. Oral supplementation of glucose precursors (GP) can be used to prevent hyperketonemia in dairy cows. The objective of this study was to compare the beneficial effects of orally supplementing a mixture of GP on metabolic health indicators and milk production status of primiparous (PP) and multiparous (MP) dairy cows. Methods: Twenty-eight Holstein cows were blocked by expected date of parturition, previous lactation yield, and parity. The cows were randomly allocated to one of the four treatment groups (n = 7 cows/group) based on their parity and GP supplementation: i) PP cows fed basal diet only (PP-CON), ii) PP cows with oral supplementation of GP (PP-GP), iii) MP cows fed basal diet only (MP-CON), and iv) MP cows with oral supplementation of GP (MP-GP). Glucose precursor (glycoline liquid) was orally drenched (300 mL/d) in GP cows from 7 days prepartum through 7 days postpartum. Other than GP supplementation, all cows were fed similar pre- and postpartum basal diets. Results: In both pre- and postpartum periods, serum glucose concentration was increased, whereas β-hydroxybutyrate and free fatty acids were decreased in GP cows compared with the CON cows. Milk yield and milk components were statistically not different between GP and CON cows over the first 9 week of lactation. The yield of actual milk, energycorrected milk, 63-days cumulative milk, colostrum yield, and calf birth weight remained higher in MP cows compared with PP cows. Conclusion: Oral drenching of GP around calving can be recommended to successfully improve the metabolic health and reduce the negative effects of hyperketonemia not only in MP but also in PP dairy cows.

This paper demonstrates a probabilistic modelling approach for establishing the correlation of Heat transfer fluid (HTF) temperature, obtained at the exit of a linear Parabolic trough collector (PTC). For the purpose, an analytical heat transfer (Physical) model was developed and validated by comparing its result with the published values. The correlation was then fitted on a dataset obtained by simulating this physical model over the sampled values acquired by applying the Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) technique over a realistic distribution of factors. The preliminary correlation was based on twenty-six natural, design and operational factors, including normal solar radiation, HTF flow rate, ambient conditions and different attributes associated with geometry and material of the concentrating reflector, receiver, sleeve and selective coating. The coefficient of determination (R 2 ) for correlation was 98.4 %. After analyzing the significance of each factor, a simplified correlation was proposed with only nine factors. The applications associated with this work include the design and simulation of direct and indirect steam generation systems, solar-assisted power generation, space heating, cooling, refrigeration and desalination.
Synthesis and mechanical characterization of alumina based composite material for armor application

This study focuses on development of advance ceramic with improved toughness which can be used as armor material forpersonnel protection. Toughness is the characteristics that defines material resistance to fracture. Ceramics are important classof materials with combination of good strength, toughness and with stand multiple-striking. In this study, three differentsamples i.e. alumina, Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA), and alumina incorporated with SiC (SiCA); hexagonal shapesamples were made by dry pressing and sintered at 1600 oC in argon atmosphere. Microstructural characterization: SEM andOptical microscopy demonstrated fine grain size distribution in matrix phase. BSE images confirmed the presence of ZrO2particles. High porosity of about 6.35% was observed in SiCA samples. EDX analysis confirms the composition. Mechanicalcharacterization showed improved toughness at the expense of hardness. SiCA samples showed maximum value of hardnesswhile ZTA showed maximum toughness of 4.6 MPa·m1/2. The obtained properties are comparable to other ceramic materialsprepared by different methods.
Mechanical and thermal properties of carboxymethyl fibers (CMF)/PVA based nanocomposite membranes

Carboxymethylfibers (CMF) of cellulose are renewable biopolymer and have shown strong reinforcingproperties when added to a compatible polymer matrix. The objective of this study was to investigate theeffect of CMF on the mechanical, thermal and swelling properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membranes. The PVA/CMF composite membranes with different proportions of CMF ranging from 1 wt.% to 6 wt.%were prepared by solution casting method. The membranes were characterized by SEM, TGA, XRD, FTIRand mechanical testing. The results revealed that at low CMF concentration composite membranesshowed homogenous dispersion of CMF in PVA matrix. The incorporation of CMF enhanced thecrystallinity of composite membranes with increase in relative humidity (RH). Furthermore, themechanical strength and moisture uptake of PVA/CMF nanocomposite membranes were enhanced afterinclusion of CMF. TGA and DSC results revealed that the addition of CMF has no significant impact on thethermal properties. PVA/CMF nanocomposite membranes showed good potential to be applied for gasseparation application particularly for CO2 capture.
