Post-Crisis Behavior of Banks in Asia: A Case of Chronic Over-Capitalization

MOHAMMAD, Khalil Ullah,MUHAMMAD, Affan,MUHAMMAD, Kaleem Ullah Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

The study investigates the behavior of Asian banks in response to the subprime mortgage crisis and examines how countries that have experimented with a mix of conventional and Islamic banking managed their balance sheet during that period. The study carries out an independent mean t-test comparing the difference of leverage of 464 conventional commercial Asian banks pre- and post-crisis from the largest twenty-five Asian economies based on GDP (2007). The analysis uses 10-year unbalanced panel data of conventional banks and employs the generalized least squares estimation using a dummy variable event window method to capture the response of Asian banks. The study finds evidence of a structural change in the capital structure of Asian commercial banks in response to the financial crisis. Findings suggest that conventional banks increased their capital position more in countries that have both Islamic and conventional banking than those countries without Islamic banking services. By having Islamic banking in their product portfolio, countries can exert market discipline on conventional banks. The study identifies a significant role of global macroeconomic shocks on banks liability structure decision-making. Evidence shows that this increase in capital positioning by banks was a permanent rather than a temporary response.

Numerical simulations of turbulent and flow characteristics of complex river reach in Pakistan

        Muhammad Usman,Saman Shahid,Shahid Ali,Muhammad Kaleem Ullah 대한환경공학회 2023 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.28 No.1

The study included the numerical simulation of a curved open channel flow of Chashma Barrage for different velocities along left & right river banks, and water depths downstream of the river reach. The physical model was constructed in one of the experimental trays at the Irrigation Research Institute. Different trials were carried out at low, medium, and high discharges after the calibration of the physical model. A 2D computational fluid dynamics ANSYS FLUENT software was used to simulate various turbulences and flow properties for various discharges (500,000, 800,000, and 957,289 cusecs) using two different turbulent models: k-epsilon and Reynolds’s stress. The simulation findings were compared to the physical modeling results in terms of velocities and water depths for verification. In both velocity (18−27%) and water depth (18−36%) measurements, the k-model had a lower average percentage error than the RS model. On verification using physical modeling, the total average percentage difference from the k-model for all discharges was less than 25%. Numerical simulations based on computational fluid dynamics can be used to better understand turbulence and flow parameters, as well as to assess and develop barrage engineering.

Molecular analysis of NlugCSP3 with behaviorally active ligands of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae)

        Irfan Waris Muhammad,Muhammad Kaleem Ullah Rana,Wang Man-Qun 한국응용곤충학회 2023 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.26 No.3

The insect olfactory system is sensitive to the complicated chemical environment. Insect’s chemosensory proteins (CSPs) supposedly act as transport of plant volatiles across the sensillar lymph and competitive fluorescent binding assay was commonly used to test the binding affinities with various plant volatiles. However, extensive research to determine the physiological role of CSPs is necessary and helpful through binding interaction of a protein with the plant volatiles. In this comparative study, we employed phylogenetic analysis, fluorescence spectra, quenching mode, and thermodynamic force to characterize Nilaparvata lugens CSP3 (NlugCSP3). The phylogenetic tree revealed that amino acid sequence of NlugCSP3 showed extremely close similarities with Laodelphax striatella (LstrCSP10 & LstrCSP11) and Sogatella furcifera (SurCSP3). The Stern-Volmer (SV) curve of NlugCSP3 fluorescence quenching indicated that nonadecane and 2-tridecanone clearly quenched NlugCSP3 fluorescence as a stable static quenching mode. Meanwhile, α-terpinene and farnesene collided with NlugCSP3, instead of forming stable complexes. The thermodynamic analysis of NlugCSP3 revealed that spontaneous binding interaction occurred in nonadecane and 2-tridecanone and is driven primarily by hydrophobic in teractions. This study not only provides the information about the binding interaction of protein with the vol atiles, but also improves the efficient recognition of behaviorally elicited volatiles that could be used in the management of brown planthopper.

Multi-aging Effects on Vegetable Based Oils for Transformer Insulation in HV Systems

        Khan Irfanullah,Abid Muhammad Ahtasham,Ullah Kaleem,Ullah Zahid,Haider Aun,Ahmad Farhan Ammar,Zia Zain,Ali Sahibzada Muhammad 대한전기학회 2021 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.16 No.5

Liquid insulation media is used for insulation and cooling purpose inside the transformer. Currently, transformers are using petroleum based mineral oil, which poses a serious hazardous environmental impact, since the mineral oil is non-renewable and non-biodegradable. Although, the increased cost and depleting nature of mineral oil cause an emergent need to use suitable alternatives to mineral oils that are biodegradable and environmentally friendly. In response to this resource issue, various vegetable oils, namely Sunfl ower oil, Soya bean oil, and a blend of Sunfl ower and Olive (BSO) oil are suitable alternatives for transformer insulation in high voltage systems. The afore-mentioned vegetable oils are subjected to multi-aging and comparative analysis is performed with mineral oil. Further, the dielectric and thermal properties of vegetable oils are tested before and after aging. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, water content, breakdown voltage, viscosity, fl ash point, tan delta, and pour point tests are performed on vegetable oils before and after aging. Finally, a comparative analysis of vegetable oils with mineral oil is provided to prove the effi cacy of the proposed vegetable oils. The BSO oil resulted in higher breakdown strength and good thermal behavior when subjected to the abovementioned various diagnostic measurement tests in comparison to other oils
