        Gods of the Soil: An Exploration into the Origins of the Folk Deities of Tamil Nadu

        이 논문은 인도에서의 고전종교와 민속 종교 전통의 관계에 대한 예비고찰을 간략하게 설명하고 난 후에, 타자로서 민속종교의 두드러진 특징을 서술한다. 논문의 두번째 부분은 인도의 남부지역, 특히 South Tamil Nadu안에서의 마을/부족신들의 기원에 대한 종교적 서술을 분석한다. 대부분의 민속 신들은 인간으로서 때에 맞지 않는 또는 부자연스러운 죽음을 만난 여성들인 것으로 나타난다. 그들은 부당한 사회 구조의 희생자들을, 신격화된 육화를 통해 그들의 추종자들의 노고를 덜 수 있는 사회의 강한 보호자, 비범한 힘의 정신으로 변화시켰다. 논문은 민속 신들의 종교적 이야기가 인간의 사회세계에서 신들의 신화적 영역으로 전환이 이루어져서 상호작용을 통해 문헌학적이고 구두적인 공간에서 발생하여 하나의 경계지역으로서 작용한다고 결론 내린다. The paper, after making a few preliminary observations and briefly spelling out the relationship between classical and folk religious traditions in India, describes some of the salient features of folk religion as an otherness. The second part of the paper analyzes religious narratives about the origins of village/folk deities, particularly in South Tamil Nadu, a southern state in India. It is shown that most of the folk deities are women who as human beings met untimely and/or unnatural deaths. The victims of unjust social structures, they metamorphosed into spirits of extraordinary power who in their divinized incarnations became powerful guardians of their communities capable of alleviating the hardships of their devotees. The paper concludes that religious stories of folk deities often serve as border zones in which a transition from the social world of humans to the mythical realm of deities takes place in the textual and oral space of mutual interaction.

        Enhanced solubility of guanosine by inclusion complexes with cyclodextrin derivatives: Preparation, characterization, and evaluation

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study improves the water solubility and cellular uptake of guanosine (GuN) through an inclusion complexation with cyclodextrin derivatives (CDs), namely β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), and sulfobutyl ether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD). Inclusion complexes of GuN and CDs are synthesized in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio with binding constants calculated using the Benesi–Hildebrand method. Characterizations of the prepared solid complexes using FTIR, XRD, TGA-DSC, and SEM indicate that GuN is found inside the cavity of the CDs. Moreover, <I>in silico</I> molecular modeling analysis identifies the most favorable binding interactions of GuN deeply encapsulated in the hydrophobic cavities of the CDs, as validated by PatchDock and FireDock servers. In addition, human breast cancer MCF-7 cell activity indicates that the SBE-β-CD:GuN complex displays better cell viability and cellular uptake than GuN or other inclusion complexes of β-CD:GuN and HP-β-CD:GuN.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> GuN with CDs inclusion complexes were synthesized in 1:1 stoichiometry. </LI> <LI> Solid complexes were confirmed by FTIR, XRD, TGA-DSC, and SEM analysis. </LI> <LI> Molecular simulations indicate strong H-bonding of GuN with CDs. </LI> <LI> CDs:GuN complexes showed significant cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Co morbidities of Myofascial Neck Pain among Information Technology Professionals

        Objectives: The objective of this study was to identify the musculoskeletal co-morbidities of neck pain of myofascial origin among IT professionals. Methods: A retrospective report analysis of 5357 IT professionals from various IT companies in India was conducted. Demographic details, type and intensity of the musculoskeletal problems, employee feedbacks on status of musculoskeletal health and physician’s diagnosis were analysed. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the age, gender, body area affected and nature of work. Chi square test was used to find the association between musculoskeletal co-morbidities and myofascial neck pain (MNP). Results: The study participants were predominantly males (71%). 41% of the population used laptops, 35% desktops and 24% both. Neck pain was the commonest reported symptom, followed by low back, shoulder and arm pain respectively. Statistical analysis also revealed that low back pain and shoulder pain, had a significant association with neck pain. Further analysis revealed that there was a significant association between the presence of MNP and thoracic outlet syndrome (p < 0.001) and fibromyalgia syndrome (p < 0.001). Other than the listed co-morbidities, eye strain was also found to be associated with MNP. Conclusions: Low back pain and shoulder pain was found to be co morbid symptoms noted among IT professionals with MNP. Thoracic outlet syndrome and fibromyalgia were found to be the most commonly associated disorders with MNP among IT professionals.

        Bioinert nano yttria stabilized zirconia coatings on 316L SS for dental applications

        The optimization of applied voltage for deposition of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) on metal substrate and its electrochemicalbehavioural studies have become major concern for the preparation of nanostructured zirconia suitable for the realization ofdental devices. In the present work, we report YSZ coating on 316L SS by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process. Optimumcoatings were obtained in the coating range of 60V-70V and a coating time of 5 minutes. The YSZ coated 316L SS sampleswere sintered under vacuum at 800 oC for 1 hr. Cubic phase of YSZ coated samples was observed by X-ray diffraction. FESEManalysis confirms that the YSZ particles were roughly spherical and distributed uniformly on 316LSS. The anticorrosionproperties of the YSZ coated 316L SS samples were characterized in artificial saliva solution by electrochemicaltechniques. The electrochemical results confirm the coating of YSZ on the surface of 316L SS and it resist vigorous ions attackfrom artificial saliva.

        Gas sensing property of lithium tetraborate clad modified fiber optic sensor

        The micro structured plate-like lithium tetraborate, Li2B4O7 (1 mm in diameter) has been prepared by sol egel method and characterized structurally by X-ray diffraction and morphologically by scanning electron microscopy. UVeVis spectrum shows about 60% transparency in the visible region and the optical energy band gap is found to be 3.5 eV which is also confirmed by strong near band edge emission from luminescence spectrum. The spectral characteristics of the cladding modified fiber optic sensor coated with microcrystalline Li2B4O7 are studied for various concentrations of ethanol, methanol and ammonia (50e500 ppm). At 298 K, the sensitivity for ethanol is 10 counts/ppm which is relatively higher than ammonia (4 counts/ppm) and methanol (3 counts/ppm). The time response of the sensor is presented for pure Li2B4O7 with ethanol gas.

        Musculoskeletal Disorders of the Upper Extremities Due to Extensive Usage of Hand Held Devices

        Objective: The use of hand held devices (HHD) such as mobile phones, game controls, tablets, portable media players and personal digital assistants have increased dramatically in past decade. While sending a text message or using the controls of the HHD the users need to use their thumb and other palm muscles extensively. The objective of this study was to describe the risk factors and clinical features of the musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) arising due to usage of hand held devices and to evaluate the effectiveness of a sequenced rehabilitation protocol. Methods: A retrospective report analysis of 70 subjects, who were diagnosed to have a MSD affecting the upper extremities, was conducted. Medical charts from a tertiary level rehabilitation centre from 2005?2013 were analysed. All the subjects reported pain in their upper extremities following extensive usage of HHD and were examined and diagnosed to have a MSD by an orthopaedic and rehabilitation physician. After the assessment and diagnosis, all the patients underwent rehabilitation using a sequenced protocol. Results: All the subjects reported pain in the thumb and forearm with associated burning, numbness and tingling around the thenar aspect of the hand, and stiffness of wrist and hand. 43 subjects had symptoms on the right side; 9 on left and 18 had bilateral symptoms. Correlation was found between hand dominance and MSD. 33 subjects complained of onset of symptoms following extensive text messaging. All the subjects were diagnosed to have tendinosis of Extensor Pollicis Longus and Myofascial Pain Syndrome affecting the 1st interossei, thenar group of muscles and Extensor Digitorum Communis. 23 of the subjects were senior executives, among these 7 were CEO’s of major multinational companies in India. All the subjects recovered completely following the rehabilitation. Conclusions: The study concluded that mobile phones and gadgets that promoted the predominant usage of thumb or only one finger while texting or using the controls were associated with a higher prevalence of MSDs. Treatment using a sequenced rehabilitation protocol was found to be effective.

        Effect of zinc oxide incorporation of poly (aniline)-titanium dioxide ternary nanocrystalline photo-anode for dye-sensitized solar cell applications

        In this work, we have developed optically transparent zinc oxide nanoparticles doped with highly efficient of poly (aniline)-titanium dioxide (PANI/TiO2/ZnO) ternary composites were prepared by simple chemical oxidative polymerization method and its used as photo-anode for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications. The as prepared PANI/TiO2/ZnO characterized by the various techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, HR-TEM, SAED, FE-SEM, AFM, and UV–Visible analysis. Morphological analysis was observed in the surface morphology of ZnO doped PANI/TiO2 in crystalline nature. The topographical AFM images were also observed in crystalline nature. Tauc plot analysis were examined the optical band-gap energy (2.95 eV) of PANI/TiO2/ZnO. The DSSCs assembled and as prepared PANI/TiO2, PANI/ZnO, TiO2/ZnO, PANI/TiO2/ZnO were used as photo-anode, 1- hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide containing the iodide/triiodide redox mediator used as the electrolyte, platinum paste used as a counter electrode. Among the devices, PANI/TiO2/ZnO photo-anode gives 8.31% efficiency.
