Enhancing evacuation response to extreme weather disasters using public transportation systems: a novel simheuristic approach

Maziar Yazdani,Mohammad Mojtahedi,Martin Loosemore 한국CDE학회 2020 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.7 No.2

In recent years, there have been an increasing number of extreme weather events that have had major impacts on the built environment and particularly on people living in urban areas. As the frequency and intensity of such events are predicted to increase in the future, innovative response strategies to cope with potential emergency conditions, particularly evacuation planning and management, are becoming more important. Although mass transit evacuation of populations at risk is recognized to play a potentially important role in reducing injury and mortality rates, there is relatively little research in this area. In answering the need for more research in this increasingly important and relatively new field of research, this study proposes a hybrid simulation–optimization approach to maximize the number of evacuees moved from disaster-affected zones to safe locations. In order to improve the efficiency of the proposed optimization approach, a novel multipopulation differential evolution approach based on an opposition-based learning concept is developed. The results indicate that even for large populations the proposed approach can produce high-quality options for decision makers in reasonable computational times. The proposed approach enables emergency decision makers to apply the procedure in practice to find the best strategies for evacuation, even when the time for decision making is severely limited.

Fabrication of alumina/polysulfone nanocomposite membranes with biofouling mitigation approach in membrane bioreactors

Maryam Homayoonfal,Mohammad Reza Mehrnia,Samane Rahmani,Yasaman Mohades Mojtahedi 한국공업화학회 2015 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.22 No.-

In this study, polysulfone/alumina nanocomposite membranes were synthesized with the principal aimof reducing biofouling in membrane bioreactors. The filtration experiments indicate that aluminananoparticles can increase water flux by enhancing membrane hydrophilicity while maintaining theseparation efficiency through decreasing porosity. Altogether, as confirmed by AFM images, thedevelopment of roughness results in biofilm formation reduction on the membrane surface layer. Onthe whole, presence of alumina nanoparticles up to the polymer concentration of 0.03 wt.% will result inan augment in separation yield up to 7%, four times higher water flux, and 83% reduction in membranefouling.

      • Association of High LDH and Low Glucose Levels in Pleural Space with HER2 Expression in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Ziaian, Bijan,Saberi, Ali,Ghayyoumi, Mohammad Ali,Safaei, Akbar,Ghaderi, Abbas,Mojtahedi, Zahra Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.4

Background: Evidence shows direct link of HER2 to increased glycolysis and over production of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). HER2 overexpression, high LDH and low glucose pleural levels are associated with poor prognosis in lung cancer. Here, their relationships were investigated. Materials and Methods: HER2 positivity was studied using immunohistochemistry in non-small cell lung cancer. Glucose and LDH levels were measured using commercial colorimetric kits. Results: Of 42 patients (29 adenocarcinoma and 13 squamous cell carcinoma), 28 (66.7%) were HER2-negative, 14 (33.3%) were HER2- positive, including 9 (21.4%) weakly stained (1+) and 5 (11.9%) moderately stained (2+) samples. The relationship between HER2 and glucose and LDH levels were tested in 20 newly diagnosed lung cancer patients who had simultaneous pleural and serum samples. Pleural and serum LDH levels were increased, and pleural glucose levels were decreased with the scale of HER2 positivity, and that the difference in glucose levels between HER2-negative group and HER2-positive patients scored at 2+ reached statistical significance (p=0.02). This latter group all had pleural glucose levels below 40 mg/dl. Conclusions: For the first time, we showed a significant association between low pleural glucose level and overexpression of HER2 in lung cancer. Further investigations are warranted to disclose the association of HER2 with low pleural glucose levels in other populations, with a larger sample size, in malignant pleural effusions caused by other types of cancer, and finally to assess employment as a screening tool for finding HER2-positive cases of lung cancer.

Probing the Photoluminescence Characteristics and Dyeability of Dyed Luminous Polypropylene Fabric

Amin Ebrahimzade,Rouhollah Semnani Rahbar,Mohammad Reza Mohaddes Mojtahedi,Milad Valibeigi 한국섬유공학회 2019 Fibers and polymers Vol.20 No.12

Luminous polypropylene fibers were melt-spun using different amounts of phosphor strontium aluminate(SrAl2O4: Eu+2, Dy+3) as luminescent agent. The knitted fabrics were then prepared from these fibers and dyed with variousdisperse dyes, acid and basic dyes. Photoluminescence and dyeability properties of the fabrics were studied. According to thephotoluminescence spectroscopy results, a broad peak with a maximum at around 540 nm was observed for luminous fabricsafter exciting at the wavelength of 400 nm, indicating that luminescent particles were not destroyed or destructured duringmasterbatch preparation and melt spinning process. The dyeing performance of luminous PP fabrics was further evaluated bythe color strength (K/S values) and photographic images. Interesting improvement of the K/S values was observed for theluminous fabric dyed with acid dye. The results showed that the ionic charge of dye used and its molecular size could beaffected the afterglow intensity of dyed luminous fabrics. Although dyed luminous fabrics showed afterglow properties, theafterglow intensity diminished by enhancing the dyeability because of increased interference of dye molecules withluminescent particles. The color coordinates L*, a*, b*, c*, and ΔE specifications of dyed fabrics were marginally influenced inthe presence of luminescent particles.
