Capturing Heterogeneous Regressor Configurations in a Choice Model

This paper empirically investigates whether consumers use different decision variables (covariates, regressors) for their purchase decisions in a supermarket shopping setting. To this end, this paper presents a new methodology that allows one to identify relevant regressors for each consumer. The proposed model was fitted to a scanner panel data set and we found extremely strong evidence supporting large variation in terms of relevant repressors configurations across consumers.
Shared Single Display Application : An Interactive Patterns Approach

Interactive patterns are able to promote the notion of interaction in groupware application development. Hence, these patterns improve the students’ engagement and promote problem solving collectively. This paper reports on the usability of the interactive patterns in designing and developing a collaborative language application. With interactive patterns, we are able to design and develop two different interactive shared single display education applications. RimbaIlmu is an after school programme to allow students to learn Bahasa Malaysia during their free time. RICLAT is an authoring tool for collaborative presentations. The patterns are useful to enrich the interaction among both education applications. Also, it facilitates more effective communication among the group members and enriches the interaction for students based on the qualitative analysis.

현재 우리나라에는 최첨단의 정보통신 서비스를 제공을 목적으로 ubiquitous city(u-City)가 건설 중에 있다. 이들 도시에서 ITS(Intelligent Transportation Systems)는 도시거주민들에게 적절한 교통 정보를 제공하는 동시에 최적으로 도시교통을 제어하는 방안이다. ITS의 한 부분으로서 교통흐름에 적합한 교통신호제어가 필요하며 이를 위해 많은 교통정보를 실시간으로 수집하여야 한다. 이러한 교통정보의 수집은 도시운영을 위하여 최첨단 정보통신 서비스가 제공되는 u-City에서는 어렵지 않을 것이다. 이러한 미래지향적인u-City의 ITS 교통제어에 적합한 새로운 시스템에 대하여 이 논문에서는 연구하였다.

Background: Acupuncture and myofascial meridians show great anatomical and clinical compatibility. Objectives: We aimed to compare the effects of myofascial meridian stretching exercises and acupuncture in patients with low back pain. Methods: We randomized 81 subjects with acute/subacute low back pain into three groups: an acupuncture (A) group, a myofascial meridian stretching (MMS) group, and a control (C) group. We recorded the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and Roland- Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMQ) scores at baseline and weeks two and six. We evaluated posterior pelvic tilt and transversus abdominis muscle strenghth with a pressure biofeedback unit, back extensor muscle strength by the Sorenson test, and lumbar range of motion (ROM) with an inclinometer. Group A received acupuncture (BL 57 and BL 62 acupoints) and stretching exercises according to the posterior superficial line were applied to the MMS group. Results: Improvements in the NRS score were more prominent in group A than in group C (p = 0.004). The RMQ score improvement between baseline and weeks two and six was more prominent in groups A and MMS (p < 0.001, p = 0.001, respectively). The Sorenson test showed significant improvement between the baseline and week two in groups A and MMS (p = 0.004, p < 0.001, respectively). The increase in lumbar ROM measurement in the MMS group between baseline and week two was significantly higher than in groups A and C (p = 0.009, p < 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Stretching exercises according to the myofascial meridian system and acupuncture contributed to improved symptoms in the first two weeks in patients with acute/subacute low-back pain.
Deliberately Unequal Gene Sampling, A Design of Molecular Studies Tested in Lepidoptera

Seeking to improve the weak resolution of deeper divergences in an initial study based on five nuclear genes (6.6kb total) in 123 exemplars, we nearly tripled the total sequence (to 26 genes, 18.4 kb total) in one third (41) of the taxa. The expanded, deliberately incomplete data matrix consistently increased bootstrap support for previously-identified groupings, while introducing no contradictory groupings of the kind that missing data have been predicted to produce. To test the relative effectiveness of “more genes” versus “more taxa” sind that we compared two largely complete matrices, the initial 5 gene × 123 taxon and the 26 gene × 41 taxon data sets, that contain roughly equal amounts of sequence. The “more genes” data set yielded consistently, sometimes dramatically higher bootstrap support that is generally not attributable to taxon number alone. We also found that a gene-rich taxon subset provides reassuring evidence of strong underlying signal that is not obvious in subsequent larger analyses, helping to encourage and guide the search for deep relationships amid the noise of expanded taxon sampling.
