Background and Purpose: The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) is the ratio of blood pressure in the lower legs to that in the arms. The intima-media thickness (IMT) of extracranial carotid arteries determined by B-mode ultrasound is a measurable index of the presence of atherosclerosis. A low ABI and a high carotid IMT are independently related to increased risk of cardiovascular events. This study examined the association between carotid IMT and ABI in patients with ischemic stroke. Materials and Methods: Retrospectively, 116 hospitalized patients with ischemic stroke were recruited. Using a pulse wave velocity ABI device along with carotid duplex sonography, we measured carotid IMT and ABI and investigated the correlation between average values. Results: There was a significant difference in carotid IMT between the normal and abnormal ABI groups (P=0.0262). The group with an abnormal ABI was more than five times as likely to have increased carotid IMT as the group with a normal ABI (age, sex-adjusted OR 5.67 (95% CI 1.85~17.38)). The ABI and carotid IMT showed a weak inverse linear correlation in patients with ischemic stroke (correlation coefficient −0.378 after adjusting for age and sex). Conclusion: Our study suggests that an abnormal ABI is associated with a high carotid IMT in patients with ischemic stroke.
Certified Reference Materials for Decommissioning Nuclear Power Plants

The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science has developed certified reference materials (concrete, soil, and metal radioactive liquid) for measuring gamma-emitting radionuclides to improve and maintain the quality assurance and quality control of the radioactivity measurement in decommissioning nuclear power plants. The raw materials that make up each CRM were mixed in an appropriate ratio with radionuclides. For certification and homogeneity assessment, 10 bottles were randomly selected, two sub-samples were collected from each bottle, and radionuclides were measured via HPGe gamma spectrometry. The results of the homogeneity tests using a one-way analysis of variance on the radionuclides in the CRMs fulfilled the requirements of ISO Guide 35. Coincidence summing and self-absorption correction were performed on measurement results by introducing the Monte Carlo efficiency transfer code and Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code. In concrete analysis, the reference values for five radionuclides (60Co, 241Am, 134Cs, and 137Cs) in the CRM were in the range of 15-40 Bq/kg, and the expanded uncertainty was within 10% (k = 2). In soil analysis, the reference values for the 137Cs and 60Co were 118.7 and 124.4 Bq/kg, and the expanded uncertainty was within 10% (k = 2). In metal radioactive liquid analysis, the reference values for 134Cs, 137Cs and 60Co in the CRM were in the range of 200-270 Bq/kg, and the expanded uncertainty was within 7% (k = 2).

<P>Ozonation is effective in improving the quality of municipal wastewater effluents by eliminating organic micropollutants. Nevertheless, ozone process design is still limited by (i) the large number of structurally diverse micropollutants and (ii) the varying quality of wastewater matrices (especially dissolved organic matter). These issues were addressed by grouping 16 micropollutants according to their ozone and hydroxyl radical (•OH) rate constants and normalizing the applied ozone dose to the dissolved organic carbon concentration (i.e., g O3/g DOC). Consistent elimination of micropollutants was observed in 10 secondary municipal wastewater effluents spiked with 16 micropollutants (∼2 μg/L) in the absence of ozone demand exerted by nitrite. The elimination of ozone-refractory micropollutants was well predicted by measuring the •OH exposure by the decrease of the probe compound <I>p</I>-chlorobenzoic acid. The average molar •OH yields (moles of •OH produced per mole of ozone consumed) were 21 ± 3% for g O3/g DOC = 1.0, and the average rate constant for the reaction of •OH with effluent organic matter was (2.1 ± 0.6) × 104 (mg C/L)−1 s–1. On the basis of these results, a DOC-normalized ozone dose, together with the rate constants for the reaction of the selected micropollutants with ozone and •OH, and the measurement of the •OH exposure are proposed as key parameters for the prediction of the elimination efficiency of micropollutants during ozonation of municipal wastewater effluents with varying water quality.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/esthag/2013/esthag.2013.47.issue-11/es400781r/production/images/medium/es-2013-00781r_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/es400781r'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

<P>Total synthesis of anguibactin was accomplished for the first time, and the following biochemical characterizations allowed for the determination of its Fe(III) binding mode as well as the demonstration of its iron delivery capability for <I>Acinetobacter baumannii</I>. These properties, in addition to the thermal stability over acinetobactin, render anguibactin as a competent surrogate siderophore that can be useful for the future development of a siderophore-based antibiotic delivery system against <I>A. baumannii</I>.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Objectives: The purpose was to investigate the preference and usage technique of NiTi rotary instruments and to retrieve data on the frequency of re-use and the estimated incidence of file separation in the clinical practice among general dentists. Materials and Methods: A survey was disseminated via e-mail and on-site to 673 general dentists. The correlation between the operator's experience or preferred technique and frequency of re-use or incidence of file fracture was assessed. Results: A total of 348 dentists (51.7%) responded. The most frequently used NiTi instruments was ProFile (39.8%) followed by ProTaper. The most preferred preparation technique was crown-down (44.6%). 54.3% of the respondents re-used NiTi files more than 10 times. There was a significant correlation between experience with NiTi files and the number of re-uses (p = 0.0025). 54.6% of the respondents estimated experiencing file separation less than 5 times per year. The frequency of separation was significantly correlated with the instrumentation technique (p = 0.0003). Conclusions: A large number of general dentists in Korea prefer to re-use NiTi rotary files. As their experience with NiTi files increased, the number of re-uses increased, while the frequency of breakage decreased. Operators who adopt the hybrid technique showed less tendency of separation even with the increased number of re-use.
