HMGB1 is associated with human cancers and is an activator of autophagy which mediates chemotherapy resistance. We here show that the mRNA levels of HMGB1 are high in leukemia cells and it is involved in the progression of childhood chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). HMGB1 decreases the sensitivity of human myeloid leukemia cells K562 to anti-cancer drug induced death through up-regulating the autophagy pathway, which is confirmed by the observation with an increase in fusion of autophagosomes and autophagolysosomes. When overexpressing HMGB1, both mRNA levels of Beclin-1, VSP34 and UVRAG which are key genes involved in mammalian autophagy and protein levels of p-Bcl-2 and LC3-II are increased. Luciferase assays document that over-expression of HMGB1 increases the transcriptional activity of JNK and ERK, which may be silenced by siRNA. The results suggest that HMGB1 regulates JNK and ERK required for autophagy, which provides a potential drug target for therapeutic interventions in childhood CML. [BMB reports 2011; 44(9): 601-606]
Lysine Requirement of Male White Pekin Ducklings from Seven to Twenty-one Days of Age

A dose-response experiment with five lysine levels (0.65, 0.80, 0.95, 1.10, and 1.25%) was conducted to evaluate the lysine requirement of male White Pekin ducklings from 7 to 21 days of age. Two hundred and eighty, 7-day-old, male White Pekin ducklings were allocated to 5 experimental treatments, each containing 8 replicate pens with 7 birds per pen. Feed and water were provided ad libitum from 7 to 21 days of age. At 21 days of age, weight gain, feed intake, feed/gain, breast meat weight, and breast meat yield relative to body weight of ducklings from each pen were all measured. As dietary lysine level increased, weight gain, feed intake, feed/gain, breast meat weight, and breast meat yield of ducklings were all improved significantly (p<0.05). According to broken-line regression analysis, the lysine requirement of male White Pekin ducklings from 7 to 21 days of age for weight gain, feed/gain, breast meat weight, and breast meat yield was 0.84, 0.90, 0.97, and 0.98%, respectively. Considering that Pekin duck production is directed to meat production, the lysine requirement of male starter Pekin ducklings during this period is suggested to be 0.98%.
Studying Retailer Strategies through an Integrated E-Business Model: a Multi-Agent Approach

Agent technology has been widely applied in todays electronic business, such as mobile agents, multi-agent information systems, etc. In particular, multi-agent systems have been applied as powerful simulation tools to study complex business networks composed of various self-interested trading firms and/or human beings. In this paper, we build an integrated model that consists of a multi-agent B2C market model and a B2B trade network model, and incorporate more reality than much of prior work. Then with this model, we carry out experimental studies on two different strategies that are common in electronic business loyal strategy (retailers try to build stable cooperation with suppliers to ensure material supply) and cost-saving strategy (retailers try to reduce cost by choosing suppliers with lower wholesale price).

Purpose Nonylphenol (NP) is an endocrine disruptor found in products such as cleaners, plastics, and detergents. It exerts actions similar to endogenous 17-estradiol (E2) and is reported to influence various cancers. However, its role in colon cancer remains elusive. Materials and Methods Colon cancer cell lines COLO 205 and SW480 were employed in our study. The cells were treated with NP or E2 followed by measurement of apoptosis and proliferation using flow cytometry and MTT assays, respectively. G protein–coupled estrogen receptor 30 (GPR30) expression was visualized using immunofluorescence and Western blot. To investigate the underlying mechanism, the expression levels of GPR30, p-protein kinase A (PKA), c-myc, cyclin D1, and ERK1/2 were analyzed using Western blot. Meanwhile, the GPR30 antagonist G15 was utilized to validate the role of GPR30 in colon cancer progression. Finally, the effect of a GPR30 inhibitor on tumor growth was determined in vivo using tumor xenograft mouse models. Results NP facilitated the proliferation of colon cancer cells and induced apoptosis failure in vitro. Western blot revealed increased GPR30 expression levels in response to NP treatment. Cyclin D1, p-PKA, c-myc, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen, proteins that regulate the cell cycle, were all upregulated by NP, and NP-mediated ERK1/2 activation and subsequent cell proliferation were abrogated by the GPR30 inhibitor G15. Moreover, colon cancer mice that received G15 administration demonstrated impaired tumor growth in vivo. Conclusion Low dose NP promotes the growth of colon tumors through GPR30-mediated activation of ERK1/2 signaling.

We investigated whether carboxylate exudation of Brassica pekinensis Rupr. was affected by nitrate deposition from simulated acid rain. A gas chromatographic (GC) analysis was employed for the determination of low molecular weight organic acids (LOA) in rhizosphere soils, bulk soil, roots and leaves of Brassica pekinensis Rupr.. Rhizosphere soils were collected after 8 weeks of plant growth by first removing the bulk soil from the root system and then by mechanical move off the rhizosphere soil that adhered to the root surface with soft brush. Soil and plant materials were simultaneously extracted with the mixture of methanol and sulfuric acid (100:7, v/v). Seven organic acids, oxalic, malonic, fumaric, succinic, maleic, L-malic and citric acid were identified and quantified by GC equipped with FID. Oxalic, L-malic, and citric acids were found in both the bulk and rhizosphere soils, while most LOAs were not detected in the control treatment. On the contrary, except maleic acid, all other organic acids were detected in the leaves and roots of cabbages treated with nitrate deposition.
Determination of Abamectin Residue in Paprika by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) techniques were developed to quantify abamectin (ABM) in paprika (Capsicum annum). Separation was achieved on a $C_{18}$ ODS column with a mobile phase of acetonitrile/water (96/4, v/v) mixture in an isocratic elution at the flow tate of 1.2 mL/min for avermectins (AVMs). The retention times were 8.0 and 9.7mins for AVM $B_{lb}$ and AVM $B_{1a}$, respectively. Residual AVMs (sum of AVM $B_{1a}$, AVM $B_{1b}$ and 8,9-Z-AVM $B_{1a}$) in the vegetable were extracted with acetonitrile, and the silica solid-phase extraction cartridges were used to purify the extract. AVMs were derivatized using trifluoroacetic acid and 1-methylimidazole, and the derivatives were determined with a fluorescence detector (excitation at 365 nm and emission at 470 nm). High and consistent recoveries, ranging from 93% to 115%, were obtained for AVM $B_{1a}$ and 8, 9-Z-AVM $B_{1a}$ at fortified levels of $20{\mu}g/kg\;and\;200{\mu}g/kg$ for paprika. The limit of quantitation (LOQ) was $2{\mu}g/kg$. The residual levels of AVMs in paprika in a field experiment from one day to seven days after the last application decreased from 18.40 to $7.59{\mu}g/kg$. The half-life $(T_{1/2})$ of AVMs in paprika was 1.47 days.
Internationalization and Firm Performance of the Chinese Service Industry

The relationship between internationalization and performance has been an important research topic. The majority of the existing literature has focused on manufacturing firms, with limited attention given to service-oriented firms. The incorporation of the industrial environment in testing this relationship has been notably absent in these studies. This study addresses these gaps by examining the relationship between internationalization and performance, ㅈassessing the impact of the service industries' industrial environment on this relationship using industry competition intensity as a moderating variable. Utilizing a sample of 824 firms in China, this study employs panel data for both time and individual fixed effects analyses. The results demonstrates that the relationship between internationalization and firm performance followed an S-shaped curve pattern. We also find that industry competition intensity significantly moderated the relationship between internationalization and firm performance. 기업의 국제화와 성과 간의 관계는 지금까지 많이 연구되어 온 중요한 연구 주제 중 하나이다. 그러나 기존 문헌의 대부분은 제조업에 초점을 맞추고 있으며, 서비스 산업에 대한 관심은 제한적이다. 또한 이러한 관계를 검증할 때 산업 환경을 고려한 연구 역시 제한적이다. 본 연구는 서비스 산업의 국제화와 성과 간의 관계를 살펴보고, 산업 경쟁 강도를 조절 변수로 사용하여 산업 환경이 이 관계에 미치는 영향을 평가하고자 하였다. 중국의 824개 기업 표본을 활용하여 시간 및 개별 고정 효과 분석을 위해 패널 데이터를 사용하였다. 분석 결과, 국제화와 기업 성과 간의 관계는 S자 곡선 패턴을 따르는 것으로 나타났고, 산업 경쟁 강도가 국제화와 기업 성과 간의 관계를 유의미하게 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 이론적 그리고 실무적 시사점을 도출하였다.

A dose-response experiment with seven supplemental pyridoxine levels (0, 0.66, 1.32, 1.98, 2.64, 3.30, and 3.96 mg/kg) was conducted to investigate the effects of pyridoxine on growth performance and plasma aminotransferases and homocysteine of White Pekin ducks and to estimate pyridoxine requirement for these birds. A total of 336 one-day-old male White Pekin ducks were divided to 7 experimental treatments and each treatment contained 8 replicate pens with 6 birds per pen. Ducks were reared in raised wire-floor pens from hatch to 28 d of age. At 28 d of age, the weight gain, feed intake, feed/gain, and the aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and homocysteine in plasma of ducks from each pen were all measured. In our study, the pyridoxine deficiency of ducks was characterized by growth depression, decreasing plasma aspartate aminotransferase activity and increasing plasma homocysteine. The ducks fed vitamin $B_6$-deficient basal diets had the worst weight gain and feed/gain among all birds and this growth depression was alleviated (p<0.05) when pyridoxine was supplemented to basal diets. On the other hand, plasma aspartate aminotransferase and homocysteine may be the sensitive indicators for vitamin $B_6$ status of ducks. The ducks fed basal diets had much lower aspartate aminotransferase activity and higher homocysteine level in plasma compared with other birds fed pyridoxine-supplemented diets (p<0.05). According to quadratic regression, the supplemental pyridoxine requirements of Pekin ducks from hatch to 28 days of age was 2.44 mg/kg for feed/gain and 2.08 mg/kg for plasma aspartate aminotransferase and the corresponding total requirements of this vitamin for these two criteria were 4.37 and 4.01 mg/kg when the pyridoxine concentration of basal diets was included, respectively. All data suggested that pyridoxine deficiency could cause growth retardation in ducks and the deficiency of this vitamin could be indicated by decreasing plasma aspartate aminotransferase activity and increasing plasma homocysteine.
A Study on the influence of Subsidiary Characteristics on Parental Control

Subsidiary characteristics are important factors in Group's control, but the existing research on this issue is lacking in empirical test. Through questionnaire survey, this paper examines the impact on the group control of the company size, business sophistication and business strategy of the subsidiary. The findings are as follows: the larger the subsidiaries, the more the parent company should exercise formal control; the greater the differentiation in subsidiary's business strategy, the more the parent should lower the degree of control, and the more the use of informal control. The relationship between subsidiary business maturity and the group control has not been verified.
