Optimal fermentation condition for development of new strawberry wine were investigated. Commercial yeast, Fermivin was good for brewing of strawberry wine and its optimal addition concentration was also 1%. Maximal ethanol content of strawberry wine was obtained when raw strawberry juice(24 brix) was fermented by 1% Fermivin at 25℃ for 7 days and its antioxidant activity was 78.5%. 새로운 딸기 와인을 개발하기 위한 최적 발효조건을 연구하였다. 시판효모인 페미빈이 딸기와인 제조에 제일 좋았고 1%가 최적 첨가 농도이었다. 딸기와인의 최대 에탄올 생성량은 생딸기주스 (24brix)를 1% 페미빈으로 25℃에서 7일 발효시켰을 때 얻어졌고 이 발효액의 항산화활성은 78.5% 이었다.

We described three cases of immediate reimplantation of a frozen-thawed autogenous mandible composed of a mixture of iliac bone, marrow, and particulate hydroxyapatite in tumors of the mandible. Acceptable outcomes were obtained in three patients who underwent immediate autogenous mandibular graft reconstruction. The conditions leading to successful outcome of the procedure are also discussed. Reimplantation of frozen autogenous lesioned mandible was performed in three patients with mandibular tumors. Two reimplanted grafts survived without complications following surgery. One case had postoperative infection that resolved with appropriate antibiotic treatment. There were no recurrences of the primary lesions. Satisfactory facial contour after surgery was achieved. These results are most promising, and we believe that, with further refinement, this technique will offer a new and acceptable modality for facial reconstruction in patients with cancer.

This study attempts to evaluate the prognostic value of the APACHE II scoring system in patients of surgical intensive care unit(SICU) and to examine its usefullness in stratifying these patients according to their surgical risk and as a potential aid in making rational and objective treatment decision. The records of 161 patients admitted to the Department of Surgery, Gyeong-Sang National University Hospital between Jan. 1991 and Dec. l995 were reviewed. 1) Of a total of 161 patients, 87 were male, 74 were female, and male to female ratio was 1.71: 1. 2) This group was seen most commonly in the age group of 55-64 which occupied 30.3% of entire group. 3) The distribution of patients according to the etiology were 74 patients(46%) in trauma, 61 patients(37%) iin postop-complication, 26 patients(9%) in others. 4) The distribution of patients according to the APACHE II scores was 9 to 29 point in adm. Day and the most patients was located between 10 and 14 of 62 patient(39%). 5) The length of hospitalization was 9 days in survived patients and 8 days in non-survived patients. The length of hospitalization of 77% of patients in this study was below 10 days. 6) The death rate was 45.45%(73 patient), this patients according to APACHE II scores was 13 to 29, median 19.2 in adm. Day, the most patients was located 20 to 24(20%). Non of the survived patients had the APACHE II score of above 20 points, but all recovered patients were below 13 points. 7) The median APACHE II score in survived patients was 10.52 point at adm. Day and 6.55 point at 5 days after admission. And non-survived patients was 20.25 point at adm. Day and 30.48 point 5 days after admission(p$lt;0.001). 8) Among the patients with low APACHE II score (below 14 points), there was no mortality. But, there was mortality with APACHE II score of above l5 points. We conclude that APACHE II scoring system is useful in measuring the severity of acute disease and predicting the outcome.

Using a mathematical method, we numerically predicted the hemodynamic response of cardiovascular system of patients according to pulsating type of left ventricular assist device(LVAD) such as continuous, copulsation, dual pulsation. This includes the hemodynamics of patients and autonomic nerve control with LVAD implanted. To simulate the effect of pumping flow type on hemodynamic performance of LVAD, the flow phenomena according to several flow conditions were analyzed.

Purpose: To report the confocal morphological changes in the cornea at least 12 months after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) compared with normal cornea. Case summary: Confocal microscopy was used to obtain data from three cases of post- LASIK at least 12 months. We evaluated confocal morphological images of the activated keratocyte, scarring tissue, stromal folding in the corneal epithelium, Bowman’s layer, stromal cells (anterior, middle, posterior keratocyte) and endothelium. Case 1) At 12 months after LASIK, although scar tissue was not observed, active keratocyte and stromal folding due to stromal edema were noted. Case 2) At 24 months after LASIK, active keratocyte and scarring tissue were not found. However, regenerated nerve plexus in the subepithelial nerve fiber layers was crooked and the stromal folding due to stromal edema was observed. Case 3) At 36 months after LASIK, the corneal epithelium and wing cell were normal but stromal folding still remained. Conclusions: Active keratocyte and stromal folding were still noted at 12 months after LASIK. Especially, stromal folding due to stromal edema remained at 36 months after LASIK.
Tiamulin 항생제가 Streptococcus parauberis KSP28에 감염된 넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus)에 나타내는 치료효과와 부작용

The diseases caused by Streptococcus sp. are frequently outbreak in olive flounder aquaculture farms in South Korea, and antibiotics are often abused to control the disease. This results in resistant strains that cannot be treated with existing fisheries antibiotics. In order to apply to other antibiotics, research on use, dosage and safety are essential. Tiamulin is an antibiotic that has good activity against mycoplasma and Gram-positive bacteria. It is mainly used in swine, cattle and poultry. Streptococcus parauberis KSP28 infected flounder had the best therapeutic effect at 15 mg/kg when injected intramuscularly, and 15 mg/kg and 30 mg/kg had the same effect when administered orally. However, intramuscular injection showed inflammation and necrosis of the muscles, and glomerulonephritis, renal tubular atrophy, Bowman’s capsule expansion, and reticuloendothelial system activity at the high dose group. Therefore, it is not appropriate to apply tiamulin injection to olive flounder because of the serious side effects. In addition, further studies should identify side effects of oral tiamulin administration.

The purpose of the present work is to simulate ECG waveform through patient-specific model formed by a clinical measured data. A 3D-virtual heart model is constructed through myocardial cells and cardiac tissues model. To evaluate the model, we postulate a normal model and a patient-specific model, respectively. And simulated results are compared with the clinical ECG data. Error ratio between the simulated results and clinical ECG waveforms under the 12 standard leads is approximately 7.68%.
IgSF11 deficiency alleviates osteoarthritis in mice by suppressing early subchondral bone changes

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease. While it is classically characterized by articular cartilage destruction, OA affects all tissues in the joints and is thus also accompanied by local inflammation, subchondral bone changes, and persistent pain. However, our understanding of the underlying subchondral bone dynamics during OA progression is poor. Here, we demonstrate the contribution of immunoglobulin superfamily 11 (IgSF11) to OA subchondral bone remodeling by using a murine model. In particular, IgSF11 was quickly expressed by differentiating osteoclasts and upregulated in subchondral bone soon after destabilization-of-the-medial-meniscus (DMM)-induced OA. In mice, IgSF11 deficiency not only suppressed subchondral bone changes in OA but also blocked cartilage destruction. The IgSF11-expressing cells in OA subchondral bone were found to be involved in osteoclast maturation and bone resorption and colocalized with receptor-activator of nuclear-factor κ-B (RANK), the key osteoclast differentiation factor. Thus, our study shows that blocking early subchondral bone changes in OA can ameliorate articular cartilage destruction in OA.
