<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We developed a novel micro-patterning technique for single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) on nitrocellulose (NC) membranes and characterized the mechanical and electrical properties of the patterned SWCNTs. The SWCNT patterns were successfully fabricated on wax-printed NC membrane by a vacuum filtration method within 15 min. The well-deposited SWCNT layer on the NC membrane exhibited strong adhesion and high conductivity due to the interconnection of the SWCNT layer in the porous structure of the NC membrane. The distinguishable patterns were resolved down to approximately 100 μm. The patterned SWCNT had an average resistivity of less than 100 Ω/sq and showed excellent mechanical properties in repeated bending tests. The suitability of the patterned SWCNT electrodes for electronic devices was demonstrated successfully via a simple light emitting diode array. Moreover, for the application of the patterned SWCNT to electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs), the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were directly deposited on the SWCNT electrode for non-enzymatic glucose determination. The oxidation peak had a linear response with glucose concentration in the range between 0.5 and 10 mM. The ePADs exhibited a sensitivity of 240 μA/mM·cm<SUP>2</SUP> and a detection limit of 148 μM, which was derived from the electro-catalytic property of AuNPs toward glucose. Avian influenza (AI) and Newcastle disease (ND) distress a variety of avian species, especially domestic poultry. Severe syndromes are caused by highly virulent specific virus strains termed highly pathogenic AI and velogenic ND viruses, which are potential agrobioterrorism agents. This outbreak emphasizes the need for continuing cooperation between public health and veterinary medical communities in controlling AI and ND when it has a zoonotic potential. Up to date, the stamping out and burying system were applied for controlling methods against these highly infectious diseases in the ordinary way, however these methods had many environmental problems, including leachat and effluvium. Thus, we assessed that sterilization effect of AI and ND virus dependent on several treatment conditions, such as autoclaving time and cutting types of chicken. As a result, we found that the cutting type of chicken meat revealed a reduced HA titer (20) against both of AI and ND virus after 10 min of autoclaving, while whole chicken showed same titer after 30 and 60 min. Therefore, we propose that the conditions of treatment on infected chicken should be developed for convenient, affordable, and effective prevention methods against for AI and ND.
The magnetization behavior and magnetocaloric effect in amorphous Fe–Nb–B ribbons

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The magnetization behavior and magnetic caloric effect have been analyzed for amorphous Fe<SUB>93−<I>x</I></SUB>Nb<SUB>7</SUB>B<SUB><I>x</I></SUB> (numbers indicate at.%; <I>x</I>=9, 14, 20) alloys. An amorphous phase was formed after quenching by melt spinning with a copper wheel surface speed of 30m/s. The magnetization measurements of the samples were performed by vibrating sample magnetometer. The Curie temperature increased from 299 to 419K with increasing B concentration (<I>x</I>=9–20). Temperature dependence of the entropy change, Δ<I>S</I><SUB>M</SUB> was calculated from the isothermal magnetization. The values of Δ<I>S</I><SUB>M</SUB> are 1.44, 1.07 and 0.97J/kgK at <I>x</I>=9, 14 and 20, respectively. The maximum of Δ<I>S</I><SUB>M</SUB> was found to appear in the vicinity of the Curie temperature in these alloy samples.</P>

Purpose: The role of adjuvant chemotherapy for patients with ypT0–2N0 rectal cancer following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) and curative surgery is uncertain. We performed a meta-analysis using selected studies to compare adjuvant chemotherapy with observation for this cohort of patients. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched. Data were pooled, and overall effect size was calculated using random effect models. Outcome measures were 5-year overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), local, and distant recurrence. Results: We included 17 nonrandomized studies for qualitative analysis and 16 nonrandomized studies that examined 4,747 patients for the meta-analysis. In analysis of patients with ypT0N0 rectal cancer, adjuvant chemotherapy had no significant effect on OS (odds ratio [OR], 1.53; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.86–2.72; I2 = 27%), DFS (OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 0.61–2.42; I2 = 5%), local recurrence (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.08–7.37; I2 = 0%), and distant recurrence (OR, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.41–2.62; I2 = 0%). In analysis of patients with ypT1–2N0 rectal cancer, adjuvant chemotherapy also had no significant effect on OS (OR, 2.15; 95% CI, 0.59–7.80; I2 = 26%), DFS (OR, 1.66; 95% CI, 0.35–7.85; I2 = 44%), local recurrence (OR, 2.56; 95% CI, 0.72–9.13; I2 = 0%), and distant recurrence (OR, 1.15; 95% CI, 0.23–5.87; I2 = 0%). Conclusion: Adjuvant chemotherapy may have no oncologic benefits in patients with ypT0–2N0 rectal cancer after nCRT and radical surgery. Routine use of adjuvant chemotherapy for those patients may be avoided.

Culture supernatants of splenocytes from C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 μg/ml cordycepin plus 3.0 μg/ml lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to investigate the effects of cordycepin (3`-deoxyadenosine) on the production of inflammatory cytokines. Co-administration of 3.0 μg/ml cordycepin with LPS in cultured murine spleen cells significantly diminished the expression of the inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in a time-dependent manner. Expression of the inflammatory cytokine IL-17A was substantially down-regulated in a time- dependent manner at all cordycepin concentrations. These findings suggest that cordycepin down-regulates the immediate hypersensitivity reaction stimulated by LPS.

This experiment was conducted to select superior local strains and obtain fundamental datas on the breeding of job’s tears. Five job’s tears local strains collected and first selected were applied in the trial. The following results were obtained from the trial. The leaf sheath was light brown, the leaf blade was green and the stigmatic color was white in Jangseong, Wando, Kimje and Gangjin local strains, but in only Hwasun local strain, the leaf sheath was reddish brown, the leaf blade was brown and the stigmatic color was red. Gangjin local strain, the most early maturing, was on July 1 and August 31 in heading and maturing date, and Jangseong local strain, the latest maturing, was on July 17 and Sept. 28, respectively. Jangseong local strain was the longest and thickest as 173cm and 10.2mm in culm length and stem diameter, but Gangjin local strain was 157cm and 9mm, respectively. Jangseong local strain had the heariest 100 grain weight as 37.4g, while Wando local the most effective tillers as 6.1, but Gangjin local strain had the least tiller as 4.6. Gangjin local strain had the heaviest 100 grain weight as 37.4g, Wando local strain had the lightest as 10.2g. In milling ratio, Jangseong local strain was highest to 70.5%, but Gangjin local strain was lowest to 29.4%, In C. protein content, Hwasun local strain was the largest to 17.4%. In milled grain yield, Jangseong local strain was highest as 423kg per 10a, but Gangjin local strain was lightest as 168kg per 10a. Milled grain yield showed negative correlation with 100 grain weight and positive correlation with another characters excepting C. protein(%). Jangseong local strain was thought to be the most proper strain in the southern part, as this strain was comparatively long culm and late maturation, but stem diameter was thick, so it was strong enough not to lodge and it was possible to harvest in about late Sept., and it was multitiller, high in milling ratio and high yielding.

This study is intended to examine the motor skill learning and treadmill exercise on motor performance and synaptic plasticity in the cerebellar injured rats by harmaline. Experiment groups were divided into four groups and assigned 15 rats to each group. GroupⅠ was a normal control group(induced by saline); GroupⅡ was a experimental control group(cerebellar injured by harmaline); GroupⅢ was a group of motor skill learning after cerebellar injured by harmaline; GroupⅣ was a group of treadmill exercise after cerebellar injured by harmaline. In motor performance test, the outcome of groupⅡ was significantly lower than the groupⅢ, Ⅳ(especially groupⅢ)(p<.001). In histological finding, the experimental groups were destroy of dendrities and nucleus of cerebellar neurons. GroupⅢ, Ⅳ were decreased in degeneration of cerebellar neurons(especially groupⅢ). In immunohistochemistric response of synaptophysin in cerebellar cortex, experimental groups were decreased than groupⅠ. GroupⅢ's expression of synaptophysin was more increased than groupⅡ, Ⅳ. In electron microscopy finding, the experimental groups were degenerated of Purkinje cell. These result suggest that improved motor performance by motor skill learning after harmaline induced is associated with dynamically altered expression of synaptophysin in cerebellar cortex and that is related with synaptic plasticity.
