Background : This study was conducted to reduce the neonatal infection rate in nursery. Methods : 50 items, structural problems in NICU were selected by open questionnaire and categorized into Ⅱ similar items. 38 items were picked out among them and then categorized into 6 similar items. We carried out quality improvement focusing Results : The high achievement of goal in CQI Activities was shown in hand washing for reducing infection of NICU after July. The local infection in Ⅳ site was not found and hand washing and gowning of protectors were achieved by 100%. Conclusion : Neonatal infection rate was reduced through the quality improvement activities, but structural problem of Hospital still remained.

Purpose: The normal values for lung resistance and lung capacity of children, as determined by impulse oscillometry (IOS), are different for children of different ethnicities. However, reference values there is no available reference value for Korean preschool children have yet to be determined. The aim of the present study was to determine the normal ranges of IOS parameters in Korean preschool children. Methods: A total of 133 healthy Korean preschool children were selected from 639 children (aged 3 to 6 years) who attended kindergarten in Seongnam, Gyeonggi province, Korea. Healthy children were defined according to the European Respiratory Society (ERS) criteria. All subjects underwent lung function tests using IOS. The relationships between IOS value (respiratory resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs) at 5 and 10 Hz and resonance frequency (RF)) and age, height, and weight were analyzed by simple linear and multiple linear regression analyses. Results: The IOS success rate was 89.5%, yielding data on 119 children. Linear regression identified height as the best predictor of Rrs and Xrs. Using stepwise multiple linear regressions based on age, height, and weight, we determined regression equations and coefficients of determination ($R^2$) for boys ($Rrs_5=1.934-0.009{\times}Height$, $R^2$=12.1%; $Xrs_5=0.774+0.006{\times}Height-0.002{\times}Age$, $R^2$=20.2% and for girls $(Rrs_5=2.201-0.012{\times}Height$, $R^2$=18.2%; $Xrs_5=-0.674+0.004{\times}Height$, $R^2$=10.5%). Conclusion: This study provides reference values for IOS measurements of normal Korean preschool children. These provide a basis for the diagnosis and monitoring of preschool children with a variety of respiratory diseases.

Ninjurin1 Deficiency Attenuates Susceptibility of Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis in Mice

<P>Ninjurin1 is a homotypic adhesion molecule that contributes to leukocyte trafficking in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of multiple sclerosis. However, <I>in vivo</I> gene deficiency animal studies have not yet been done. Here, we constructed Ninjurin1 knock-out (KO) mice and investigated the role of Ninjurin1 on leukocyte trafficking under inflammation conditions such as EAE and endotoxin-induced uveitis. Ninjurin1 KO mice attenuated EAE susceptibility by reducing leukocyte recruitment into the injury regions of the spinal cord and showed less adhesion of leukocytes on inflamed retinal vessels in endotoxin-induced uveitis mice. Moreover, the administration of a custom-made antibody (Ab<SUB>26–37</SUB>) targeting the Ninjurin1 binding domain ameliorated the EAE symptoms, showing the contribution of its adhesion activity to leukocyte trafficking. In addition, we addressed the transendothelial migration (TEM) activity of bone marrow-derived macrophages and Raw264.7 cells according to the expression level of Ninjurin1. TEM activity was decreased in Ninjurin1 KO bone marrow-derived macrophages and siNinj1 Raw264.7 cells. Consistent with this, GFP-tagged mNinj1-overexpressing Raw264.7 cells increased their TEM activity. Taken together, we have clarified the contribution of Ninjurin1 to leukocyte trafficking <I>in vivo</I> and delineated its direct functions to TEM, emphasizing Ninjurin1 as a beneficial therapeutic target against inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis.</P>
