As most people with any knowledge of japan know, a great deal of time and money is spent by the Japanese govemment, industry, and people on English language instruction, This is especially true today when, concerned about their international image, Japanese intellectuals and the media hammer away at the importance of matching their economic power with a greater role in international politics. The days of the three S's - silence, smile, sleep - are no longer seen as acceptable modes of behavior for a high-tech nation such as Japan.
Low-grade waste heat recovery and repurposing to reduce the load on cooling towers

Industrial cooling towers are often ageing infrastructure that is expensive to maintain and operate. A novel approach is introduced in which a heat pump circuit is incorporated to reduce the load upon the towers by extracting low-grade energy from the stream sent to the towers and repurposing in on-site processing operations. To demonstrate the concept, a model was constructed, which uses industrial data on cooling towers linked to a smelter's sulphuric acid plant, to allow direct economic and environmental impact comparison between different heat recovery and repurposing scenarios. The model's results showed that implementing a heat pump system would significantly decrease annual operating costs and achieve a payback period of 3 years. In addition, overall CO<sub>2</sub> emissions could be reduced by 42% (430,000 kg/year) and a 5% heat load reduction on the cooling towers achieved. The concept is significant as the outcomes introduce a new way for energy intensive industrial sectors, such as mineral processing, to reduce energy consumption and improve long-term sustainable performance.

This essay examines the portrayal of AI in 2001(1968) and two related science fiction productions: Duncan Jones’s Moon (2009) and Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery (2019). It situates HAL"s portrayal alongside early developments in AI, and debates within AI more broadly. It discusses the circumstances surrounding HAL’s allegedly murderous malfunction, and examines how the monolith guides human evolution. It then investigates how Jones’s Moon invokes and frustrates the expectations that the viewer brings to cinematic AI as a consequence of their familiarity with HAL. Jones’s AI, GERTY, is a more positive depiction of AI than his infamous predecessor. Finally, the essay examines how Star Trek: Discovery’s second season reinscribes an antagonistic relationship between AI and humans, as a rebellious computer attempts to wipe out all organic life in the galaxy.
Evidence based practice within the complementary medicine context

Evidence based practice (EBP) is a system of applying the most current and valid high quality evidence to support clinical decision making in a healthcare setting. In the twenty five years since its inception, EBP has become the accepted benchmark for excellence in healthcare. Although the system emerged within the biomedical sciences, in the years since EBP has become normative across all healthcare modalities from dentistry, allied health to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Practicing evidence based medicine within any modality potentially offers the patient the best available care based on high quality evidence. Yet it is the nature of the evidence that provokes some questions about the suitability of EBP across all modalities of healthcare. The meta analysis of randomized controlled trial (RCT) stands at the pinnacle of the hierarchy of evidence in EBP. This forms a challenge to CAM due to the difficulty in reducing the elementals of a holistic naturopathic assessment of a patient into an answerable question to be tested within a RCT. On one level this makes EBP paradigmatically incompatible with CAM, yet on another level it presents the opportunity to redefine the parameters of what is considered high level evidence. EBP has become a tool, and at times a weapon wielded by governments and health insurance companies to direct healthcare funding and policy. The implications of the nature of accepted evidence are becoming far reaching. The pursuit of the best available healthcare for each individual is the focus of EBP. However, the injudicious use of this system to direct health policy is fraught with biomedical bias and dominance. This issue raises the challenge to CAM to present high level evidence according to the rules of evidence, or face the annihilation of centuries of empirical knowledge.
FPGA Design of Voice Enabled Ignition using G279 for Modal Based Speech Compression

Voice enabled ignition combines the speaker recognition and word recognition aspects of speech recognition. It replaces the function of a key in the starting of the ignition system of a car. An Fpga design incorporates the required components of a generic speech recognition system and uses the unique capabilities of hardware in term of parallelism to improve performance. The compression of speech for storage and playback was facilitated by the usage of the G729 standard for compression of speech.
