Statistical Properties and Memory Capacities of Chaos Associative Memory

In this report we shall propose a chaos dynamic memory model applied to the chaotic autoassociation memory. The present artificial neuron model is properly characterized in terms of a timedependent sinusoidal activation function to involve a transient chaotic dynamics as well as the energy steepest descent strategy. It is elucidated that the present neural network has a remarkable retrieval ability beyond the conventional models with such a monotonous activation function as sigmoidal one. This advantage is found to result from the property of the analogue periodic mapping accompanied with a chaotic behaviour of the neurons as well as the symmetry of the dynamic equation.

On the basis of the mean-field theory established in statistical physics we investigate the Bayesian inference using the the expected a posterior (EAP) estimation for predicting a set of environmental variables which realize comfortable environments due to air conditioner. In this method, the posterior probability is estimated using the model prior which realizes the thermal comfort via the temperature-humidity index around the optimal value and the likelihood which expresses expressing transition probability from each comfortable state to realistic one. Then, using the mean-field theory, we find that the present method predicts the variables which approximates the optimal values of the THI at sampling points using the air conditioner power consumption of air conditioner, if we use the parameters appropriately. Further, from the results of the parameter dependence both of the THI and power consumption due to air conditioner. These results were quantitatively confirmed by numerical calculations for several realistic cases.
Direct mapping of potential distribution of Al/poly(alkylthiophene)/Au diode

Potential profiles of an Al/poly(3-hexylthiophene), PHT film/Au diode through Al to Au electrodes have been measured directly using a micro-manipulator with a potential probe tip. A steep potential cliff is observed at the interface of Al/PHT for negative biases to Au against Al, indicating the existence of a depletion layer with higher resistance than that of the PHT bulk region. For a positive bias above +1 V to Au, the interface resistance at Al/PHT decreases markedly, resulting in a forward current in the rectification diode. It is found that the contact resistance of PHT/Au is unexpectedly large in spite of the ohmic behavior. The effect of light on the depletion layer is also studied. It is stressed that the contact resistances of PHT and metals are significantly important and determine the performance of organic electronic devices.

By making use of environmental quantities, such as temperature and relative humidity, we search optimal conditions on thermal index called as the temperature-humidity index (THI) at each sampling point and power consumption due to air conditioning, both of which are estimated by repeating the Bayesian inference using the EAP estimation with an increase in the ratio of the coefficient of the model prior as to that of the likelihood. Then, we estimate static property of the Bayesian inference and dynamic property of the iterative method by making use of numerical calculations for several cases. Numerical results show that the iterative method succeeds in searching the optimal conditions on the environmental variables, if we increase the ratio up to its optimum respective of the choice of observed variables. These results are confirmed by the mean-field theory for the full-connected model.

The sweet taste receptors present in the taste buds are heterodimers comprised of T1R2 and T1R3. This receptor is also expressed in pancreatic ß-cells. When the expression of receptor subunits is determined in ß-cells by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, the mRNA expression level of T1R2 is extremely low compared to that of T1R3. In fact, the expression of T1R2 is undetectable at the protein level. Furthermore, knockdown of T1R2 does not affect the effect of sweet molecules, whereas knockdown of T1R3 markedly attenuates the effect of sweet molecules. Consequently, a homodimer of T1R3 functions as a receptor sensing sweet molecules in ß-cells, which we designate as sweet taste-sensing receptors (STSRs). Various sweet molecules activate STSR in ß-cells and augment insulin secretion. With regard to intracellular signals, sweet molecules act on STSRs and increase cytoplasmic Ca2+ and/or cyclic AMP (cAMP). Specifically, when an STSR is stimulated by one of four different sweet molecules (sucralose, acesulfame potassium, sodium saccharin, or glycyrrhizin), distinct signaling pathways are activated. Patterns of changes in cytoplasmic Ca2+ and/or cAMP induced by these sweet molecules are all different from each other. Hence, sweet molecules activate STSRs by acting as biased agonists.

We used the polymerase chain reaction to identify a mouse testis cDNA that represented another member of a growing class of mammalian endoproteases involved in the processing of precursor proteins. This cDNA encoded a 655-residue protein, designated PC4, containing a bacterial subtilisin-like catalytic domain closely related to those of the recently characterized precursor-processing endoproteases, furin, PC1/PC3, PC2, and Kex2. Within this domain, the amino acid sequence of PC4 was 70, 58, 55, and 45% identical with those of mouse furin, mouse PC1/PC3, mouse PC2, and yeast Kex2, respectively. Northern blot analysis indicated that the PC4 mRNA was detectable only in the testes after the 20th day of postnatal development. Moreover, this message was mainly expressed in the round spermatids. These data suggest that PC4 represents a prime candidate for a precursor-processing endoprotease in the testicular germ cells and that its gene expression is regulated during spermatogenesis.

Many peptide hormones and neuropeptides are produced from larger, inactive precursors though endoproteolysis at sites usually marked by paired basic residues (primarily Lys-Arg and Arg-Arg), or occasionally by a monobasic residue (primarily Arg). Based upon data concerning processing of prorenin and its mutants around the native Lys-Arg cleavage site expressed in mouse pituitary AtT-20 cells, we present the following sequence rules that govern mono-arginyl cleavages: (a) a basic residue at the fourth (position-4) or the sixth(position-6) residue upstream of the cleavage site is required, (b) at position - 4, Arg ; more favorable than Lys, and (c) at position I, a hydrophobic aliphatic residue is not suitable. These rules are compatible with those proposed by comparison of precursor sequences around mono-arginyl cleavage sites. We also provide evidence that precursor cleavages at mono-arginly and dibasic sites can be catalyzed by the same Kex2-like processing endoprotease, PC1/PC3.
