Solid-state lasers have been developed for peak-power operation in the terawatt to petawatt regions by using chirped pulse amplication (CPA) and optical parametric (OPCPA) technology. Also thermal distortion-free, 10-nsec repetitive peak-power lasers have been developed. Broadband amplication of a solid-state laser is a key issue for the pre-amplication stage of CPA system, and the OPA scheme gives a high gain with a very low pre-pulse level while keeping a 5-nm bandwidth. On the other hand, nonlinear optical technology using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is promising as a way to compensate for thermal diculties caused in strongly pumped laser materials. SBS is well known for the phase conjugation mirror (PCM) used for an average power output with a high re ectivity of over 95 %. A liquid uorocarbon with a special treatment can be used to achieve a 10-ns duration, 50-Hz repetition laser delivering 0.4-GW peak power, with a 200-W average power. A liquid ow system in an SBS cell can be used to realize PCM behavior up to the kW range. The last theme in this paper is a short review of new ceramic materials for a scalable solid-state laser. In past ten years, Japanese researchers have investigated new transparent ceramic YAG materials for industrial application. The ceramics have many advantages for an average power laser, such as high doping rate, co-doping potential, large-size fabrication, and composite structure.

This paper presents an application of Estimation of Distributed Algorithms to the job shop scheduling withthe objective to minimize tardiness of jobs. The priority values for job selection are coded as genes and estimated byEDAs. Three kinds of methods for estimating the priorities are tested. In addition, the optimization method using the mixture of EDA and an effective priority rule for job selection is examined. Numerical experiments show that the performance of EDAs is comparable to that of a genetic algorithm using a random key coding.

Objective: In December 2011, Fukuoka Dental College (FDC) established a satellite dental hospital: the Center for Oral Diseases (COD). One of the purposes of the COD was to acquire a sufficient number of patients for the clinical training of dental students. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patients’ acceptance of treatment by dental students at FDC and the COD, and to identify factors that may predispose patients to non-acceptance of treatment by dental students. Methods: We questioned all new patients on their acceptance of receiving dental treatment performed by dental students, and their answers were recorded. We then compared the degree of acceptance between FDC and the COD. Results: The degree of non-acceptance was significantly higher in the COD patients. Furthermore, both female and halitosis patients displayed a higher degree of non-acceptance. When halitosis patients were excluded, the degree of acceptance did not differ significantly between the two hospitals. Conclusion: There may be many reasons for patient non-acceptance of dental treatment performed by students. However, halitosis patients were found to be more nervous on being treated or observed by students. Based on these results, the COD may be able to serve as an effective student training dental hospital if halitosis patients are excluded from the clinical training course.

Objective: Fukuoka Dental College established a satellite clinic, the Center for Oral Diseases (COD), in December 2011. In this study, we analyzed halitosis patients and the role of dental hygienists. Methods: Approximately 70% of the patients were female and most were in their 40s. We analyzed the possible causes of halitosis. Results: More than half of the patients exhibited a thick tongue coating. Low salivary flow was present in 23.6% of males and in 39.4% of females. Pocket depth ≥6 mm was found in 44.2% of males and in 16.7% of females. We also analyzed treatment provided after breath odor measurement. Most of the patients with physiological halitosis and pseudohalitosis did not receive further treatment, but some were treated at the COD with scaling and professional tooth cleaning. Many of the patients with genuine halitosis received dental treatment at the COD. We referred patients from other clinics and from distant locations to their local doctors for treatment. Conclusion: Halitosis had various causes, and the role of dental hygienists, including scaling, root planing, and tooth brushing instruction, are important in decreasing breath odor. Dental hygienists play an important role in communication with halitosis patients.

Study Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Purpose: To compare measurements of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) and whole fat mass (WFM) obtained using dualenergy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) among patients with low back pain (LBP). Moreover, the study investigated the correlation between BIA-based ASMM and DXA-based bone mineral density (BMD). Overview of the Literature: If reliable, BIA may be a useful alternative to DXA as a screening tool for sarcopenia and osteoporosis among patients with LBP. Methods: Measurements were performed in 130 patients, including BMD of the lumbar spine and femoral neck. The correlation between DXA and BIA as well as between BIA-ASMM and BMD were evaluated. Results: BIA and DXA were highly correlated in both male and female patients (r =0.73–0.90, p <0.0001). However, BIA consistently overestimated ASMM by 1.5–2.5 kg on an average (p <0.0001) and underestimated WFM (−4.0 to −2.7 kg) on an average (p <0.0001). BIA-based ASMM correlated with BMD of the lumbar spine in both male and female patients (r =0.28–0.37, p ≤0.02) and that of the femoral neck (r =0.34–0.51, p ≤0.005). Regarding the calculated skeletal muscle index (SMI: ASMM/height [m2]) used as a criterion for sarcopenia, BIA-based SMI correlated with BMD of the lumbar spine in male patients (r =0.44, p =0.0004) and that of the femoral neck in female patients (r =0.33, p =0.009). Conclusions: BIA may be a favorable alternative to DXA as a screening tool for sarcopenia and osteoporosis among patients with LBP. Considering the overestimation of BIA-based ASMM and SMI, we recommend using the cutoff values for sarcopenia of 7.9 kg/m2 for males and 6.1 kg/m2 for females.

For developing navigation system of total hip arthroplasty (THA) and evaluating hip joint kinematics, 3-D pose position of the femur and acetabulum in the pelvic coordinate system has been quantified. The pelvic coordinate system is determined by manually indicating pelvic landmarks in multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) images. It includes intra- and inter-observer variability, and may result in a variability of THA operation or diagnosis. To reduce the variability of pelvic coordinate system determination, this paper proposes an automated method in MDCT images. The proposed method determines pelvic coordinate system automatically by detecting pelvic landmarks on anterior pelvic plane (APP) from MDCT images. The method calibrates pelvic pose by using silhouette images to suppress the affect of pelvic pose change. As a result of comparing with manual determination, the proposed method determined the coordinate system with a mean displacement of $2.6\;{\pm}\;1.6$ mm and a mean angle error of $0.78\;{\pm}\;0.34$ deg on 5 THA subjects. For changes of pelvic pose position within 10 deg, standard deviation of displacement was 3.7 mm, and of pose was 1.28 deg. We confirmed the proposed method was robust for pelvic pose changes.

A 9.6 dB gain is observed at 1310 nm in a 5.0 cm bismuth-doped silica fiber. A launched pump power of 100 mW was obtained using an 810-nm laser diode. We demonstrated the simultaneous optical amplification at two wavelengths near second telecommunication windows, which is the range of zero-dispersion for silica fibers.

Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro pharmacological activity of growth factors (GFs) in freeze-dried platelet-rich plasma (FD-PRP) after storage for 4 weeks. Overview of Literature: Freshly prepared PRP is a rich source of many GFs. We reported that FD-PRP stored for 8 weeks accelerated bone union in a rat posterolateral fusion model equally well as fresh-PRP. However, the pharmacological activity of FD-PRP after long-term storage has not been shown in vitro. Methods: Immediately after preparation, as well as 4 weeks after freeze-dried storage, the platelet count was measured. Human osteoblasts were treated with fresh-PRP and FD-PRP, respectively. Western blotting was used to assess the phosphorylation of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptor (PDGFR) and its downstream target, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). The proliferation rates of osteoblasts were investigated by immunocytochemistry and MTT cell viability assays. Furthermore, we used western blotting to evaluate the effect of PDGFR knockdown on the phosphorylation of ERK stimulated with fresh-PRP and FD-PRP. Results: Platelet counts in both the fresh-PRP and FD-PRP samples were approximately 10-fold higher than in peripheral blood samples. The phosphorylation and activation of the PDGFR and ERK were evenly induced by fresh-PRP and FD-PRP stimulation. Both fresh-PRP and FD-PRP significantly induced osteoblast proliferation in MTT cell viability assays. Furthermore, osteoblast PDGFR knockdown attenuated the downstream ERK activation by fresh PRP and FD-PRP. Conclusions: We demonstrated the pharmacological activity of PDGF in FD-PRP in vitro after 4 weeks of storage.

The excellent thermal and mechanical properties of silica glass are very attractive for a high-average-power laser medium. We have been developing a new laser medium based on silica glass, and we have discovered a new infrared emission from a bismuth-doped silica glass. Also, we achieved an optical amplification in a bismuth-doped silica fiber at 1308 nm with an 810-nm excitation.
