Soluble Carbohydrates Content and Ethylene Production in Cut Rose Cultivars

        Amrollah Nabigol,Roohangiz Naderi,Yunes Mostofi,Ahmad Khalighi,Mas’ood Bujar 한국원예학회 2009 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.50 No.2

Vase life of ten cut rose cultivars were comprised in three chemical solutions which included distilled water (control), hydroxyquinoline citrate (HQC) and HQC plus sucrose. Results showed that there was significant difference among cultivars in vase life, the way of flower opening, water uptake, transpiration rate, ethylene production and carbohydrate content. Treatment with HQC plus sucrose was found to markedly increase the vase life of cut flowers. In the control group, flowers showing the longest vase life were ‘Maroussia’ at 14.3 days while the shortest were ‘Black Magic’ at 5.6 days. Although concentrations of fructose, glucose and sucrose in petals and fructose and sucrose in stems varied among cultivars, no significant difference was found in stem glucose among cultivars. Concentrations of soluble carbohydrates in the petals of cultivars which showed increased longevity were much higher than those of short lived cultivars. In addition, these shorter lived cultivars produced higher ethylene concentrations when compared to the longer lived cultivars.
