Asian Citations: Postmodernism, Politics, and Global Cinema
Marchetti, Gina 문학과영상학회 2013 문학과영상 Vol.14 No.1
Film plays a critical role in creating a common ground for the exchange of political and aesthetic ideas between Asia and the rest of the world. The depiction of Asia on contemporary world screens serves as a site, sight, and citation—a place, an image, and a reference point—for an ongoing critique of global politics and film aesthetics. In this paper, I plan to show how transnational productions—made in and/or about Asia—use intensely self-reflexive techniques with a high degree of intertextuality in order to carve out a cinematic common ground. Film quotations, then, operate as part of a postmodern cultural marketplace, but, more importantly, they also link current motion pictures to past political movements and unresolved social issues that continue to fuel screen fantasies about Asia in the 21st century. Taking Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s Café Lumiere and The Flight of the Red Balloon as case studies, I plan to look at the various ways the films negotiate a space between Chinese-language filmmaking in Taiwan and the legacy of French and Japanese cinema, while simultaneously creating a site for a particular type of transnational Asian art cinema.

In order to grasp the complexity of the events in Hong Kong leading up to the imposition of the National Security Law in 2020, a feminist critique inspired by Lauren Berlant’s notion of “cruel optimism” provides a productive place to expand the conversations about the role gender plays in the territory’s political culture. Concentrating on the period between October 1 and December 31, 2019, this analysis examines this more violent but also more optimistic period encompassing the lead up to the District Council elections and subsequent events before COVID-19 upended the city in early 2020. A feminist lens magnifies the discourses circulating through mass and social media. Attention turns to forms of political expression in films, cartoons, literature, and the other arts, which highlight the ways in which gender and sexuality play their parts in the cruel optimism of Hong Kong’s protest culture.

How does the presence of an AGN influence the total SFR estimates of galaxies and change their distribution with respect to the \textit{Galaxy Main Sequence}?To contribute to solving this question, we study a sample of 1133 sources detected in the North Ecliptic Pole field (NEP) by AKARI and Herschel. We create a multi-wavelength dataset for these galaxies and we fit their multi-wavelength Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) using the whole spectral regime (from 0.1 to 500 $\mu$m). We perform the fit using three procedures: \texttt{LePhare} and two optimised codes for identifying AGN tracers from the SED analysis. In this work we present an overview of the comparison between the estimates of the Infrared bolometric luminosities (between 8 and 1000 $\mu$m) and the AGN fractions obtained exploiting these different procedures. In particular, by estimating the AGN contribution in four different wavelength ranges (5-40 $\mu$m, 10-20 $\mu$m, 20-40 $\mu$m and 8-1000 $\mu$m) we show how the presence of an AGN affects the PAH emission by suppressing the ratio $\frac{L_{\rm8~\mu m}}{L_{\rm4.5~\mu m}}$ as a function of the considered wavelength range.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop nomograms for predicting the probability of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in locally advanced cervical cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radical surgery. Materials and Methods Nomograms to predict the 5-year OS rates and the 2-year PFS rates were constructed. Calibration plots were constructed, and concordance indices were calculated. Evaluated variables were body mass index, age, tumor size, tumor histology, grading, lymphovascular space invasion, positive parametria, and positive lymph nodes. Results In total 245 patients with locally advanced cervical cancer who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radical surgery were included for the construction of the nomogram. The 5-year OS and PFS were 72.6% and 66%, respectively. Tumor size, grading, and parametria status affected the rate of OS, whereas tumor size and positive parametria were the main independent PFS prognostic factors. Conclusion We constructed a nomogram based on clinicopathological features in order to predict 2-year PFS and 5-year OS in locally advanced cervical cancer primarily treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by radical surgery. This tool might be particularly helpful for assisting in the follow-up of cervical cancer patients who have not undergone concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

Objective: Bevacizumab maintenance following platinum-based chemotherapy is an effective treatment for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), both in primary and recurrent disease. Our aim was to identify criteria to select elderly patients who can safely benefit from bevacizumab addition. Methods: This is a case-control study on patients with primary or recurrent EOC who received platinum-based chemotherapy plus bevacizumab, between January 2015 and December 2016. Patient characteristics, treatment details and adverse events were reviewed and analyzed in 2 settings: younger (<65 years, group 1) and elderly (≥65 years, group 2). A binary logistic model was applied to correlate clinical variables and severe (grade ≥3) toxicity risk. Results: Overall, 283 patients with EOC were included, with 72 (25.4%) older patients compared with 211 (74.6%) younger women. Bevacizumab had been administered to 234 patients (82.7%) as first-line treatment and in 49 (17.3%) with recurrent disease. At diagnosis, elderly patients presented with at least one comorbidity and were taking at least 1 medication in 84.7% and 80.6% of the cases respectively, compared with correspondingly 47.4% and 37.4% in group 1 (p<0.001). Nonetheless, the occurrence of serious (grade ≥3) adverse events did not increase among the older group. Creatinine serum levels >1.1 g/dL, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≤60 mL/min, ≥3 comorbidities were independently associated with a higher severe toxicity. Conclusions: Elderly patients with EOC can safely be treated with bevacizumab; factors other than age, as higher creatinine serum levels, eGFR and number of comorbidities should be considered to better estimate bevacizumab-related toxicity risk.

<P>This paper presents the synthesis and structural characterization of the unprecedented tris-phosphido-bridged compounds Pt3(μ-PBu<I>t</I>2)3X3 (X = Cl, Br, I), having only 42 valence electrons, while up to now analogous clusters typically have 44e–. The new species were obtained by an apparent bielectronic oxidation of the 44e– monohalides Pt3(μ-PBu<I>t</I>2)3(CO)2X with the corresponding dihalogen X2. Their X-ray structures are close to the <I>D</I>3<I>h</I> symmetry, similarly to the 44e– analogues with three terminal carbonyl ligands. The products were also obtained by electrochemical oxidation of the same monohalides in the presence of the corresponding halide. In a detailed study on the formation of Pt3(μ-PBu<I>t</I>2)3I3, the redox potentials indicated that I2 can only perform the first monoelectronic oxidation but is unsuited for the second one. Accordingly, the 43e– intermediate [Pt3(μ-PBu<I>t</I>2)3(CO)2I]+ was ascertained to play a key role. Another piece of information is that, together with the fully oxidized product Pt3(μ-PBu<I>t</I>2)3I3, the transient 44e– species [Pt3(μ-PBu<I>t</I>2)3(CO)3]+ is formed in the early steps of the reaction. In order to extract detailed information on the formation pathway, involving both terminal ligand substitutions and electron transfer processes, a DFT investigation has been performed and all the possible intermediates have been defined together with their associated energy costs. The profile highlights many important aspects, such as the formation of an appropriate couple of 43e– intermediates having different sets of terminal coligands, and suitable redox potentials for the transfer of one electron. Optimizations of 45e– associative intermediates in the ligand substitution reactions indicate their possible involvement in the redox process with reduction of the overall energy cost. Finally, according to MO arguments, the unique stability of the 42e– phosphido-bridged Pt3 clusters can be attributed to the simultaneous presence of three terminal halides.</P><P>This paper presents the synthesis and structural characterization of the unprecedented tris-phosphido-bridged compounds Pt3(μ-PBu<I>t</I>2)3X3 (X = Cl, Br, I), having only 42 valence electrons, while up to now analogous clusters typically have 44e−. Diatom Allantoin Synthase Provides Structural Insights into Natural Fusion Protein Therapeutics
Oh, Juntaek,Liuzzi, Anastasia,Ronda, Luca,Marchetti, Marialaura,Corsini, Romina,Folli, Claudia,Bettati, Stefano,Rhee, Sangkee,Percudani, Riccardo American Chemical Society 2018 ACS CHEMICAL BIOLOGY Vol.13 No.8
<P>Humans have lost the ability to convert urate into the more soluble allantoin with the evolutionary inactivation of three enzymes of the uricolytic pathway. Restoration of this function through enzyme replacement therapy can treat severe hyperuricemia and Lesch-Nyhan disease. Through a genomic exploration of natural gene fusions, we found that plants and diatoms independently evolved a fusion protein (allantoin synthase) complementing two human pseudogenes. The 1.85-Å-resolution crystal structure of allantoin synthase from the diatom <I>Phaeodactylum tricornutum</I> provides a rationale for the domain combinations observed in the metabolic pathway, suggesting that quaternary structure is key to the evolutionary success of protein domain fusions. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) conjugation experiments indicate that a PEG-modified form of the natural fusion protein provides advantages over separate enzymes in terms of activity maintenance and manufacturing of the bioconjugate. These results suggest that the combination of different activities in a single molecular unit can simplify the production and chemical modification of recombinant proteins for multifunctional enzyme therapy.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
