The dynamic response of a prototype steel floor using velocity-source type of excitation

        Magalhaes, Max D.C. Techno-Press 2013 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.46 No.3

Vibration isolators and anti-vibration mounts are ideal, for example, in creating floating floors for gymnasiums, or performance spaces. However, it is well-known that there are great difficulties on isolating vibration transmission in structural steel components, especially steel floors. Besides, the selection of inertia blocks, which are usually used by engineers as an effective vibration control measure, is usually based on crude methods or the experience of the engineers. Thus, no simple method or indices have been available for assessing the effect of inertia blocks on vibration isolation or stability of vibratory systems. Thus, the aims of this research are to provide further background description using a FE model and present and implement a modal approach, that was validated experimentally, the latter assisting in providing improved understanding of the vibration transmission phenomenon in steel buildings excited by a velocity-source type of excitation. A better visualization of the mean-square velocity distribution in the frequency domain is presented using the concept of modal expansion. Finally, the variation of the mean-square velocity with frequency, whilst varying mass and/or stiffness of the coupled system, is presented.

Effects of Taurine Supplementation on the Growth Performance of Juvenile Rock Bream Oplegnathus fasciatus

Fernando Magalhaes Ferreira,윤현호,박영진,박건현,최세라,배승철 한국수산과학회 2014 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.17 No.2

An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary taurine supplementation on the growth performance of juvenile rock bream, Oplegnathus fasciatus. Triplicate groups of 25 fish averaging 2.72 ± 0.04 g (mean ± SD) were fed one of six experimental diets prepared by adding taurine at 0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 3.0% (Control, Tau0.25, Tau0.5, Tau1.0, Tau1.5 and Tau3.0, respectively). At the end of the feeding trial, the weight gain, specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the Tau0.5, Tau1.0 and Tau1.5 diets were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those of fish fed the Control and Tau0.25 diets. The feed efficiency of fish fed the Tau0.5 diet was significantly higher than that of fish fed the Control, Tau0.25 and Tau3.0 diets. Fish fed the Tau1.0 diet had higher whole-body crude protein content than fish fed the Control diet, while the crude lipid content of fish fed the Tau1.5 and Tau3.0 diets was significantly lower than that of fish fed the Control and Tau0.25 diets. An ANOVA suggested that the optimum level of dietary taurine supplementation to improve growth and reduce the body lipid contents of juvenile rock bream, O. fasciatus, was 0.5%, while a broken line analysis of weight gain indicated a level of 0.62%.

An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary taurine supplementation on the growth performance of juvenile rock bream, Oplegnathus fasciatus. Triplicate groups of 25 fish averaging $2.72{\pm}0.04$ g ($mean{\pm}SD$) were fed one of six experimental diets prepared by adding taurine at 0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 3.0% (Control, $Tau_{0.25}$, $Tau_{0.5}$, $Tau_{1.0}$, $Tau_{1.5}$ and $Tau_{3.0}$, respectively). At the end of the feeding trial, the weight gain, specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the $Tau_{0.5}$, $Tau_{1.0}$ and $Tau_{1.5}$ diets were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those of fish fed the Control and $Tau_{0.25}$ diets. The feed efficiency of fish fed the $Tau_{0.5}$ diet was significantly higher than that of fish fed the Control, $Tau_{0.25}$ and $Tau_{3.0}$ diets. Dietary Sulfur Amino Acids Can Spare Taurine in Rock Bream Oplegnathus fasciatus

Ferreira, Fernando Magalhaes,Yun, Hyeonho,Park, Youngjin,Lee, Seunghan,Park, Gunhyun,Bai, Sungchul C. The Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Scienc 2015 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.18 No.3

An 8 week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate whether methionine and cysteine would effectively spare taurine supplementation on growth performance in juvenile rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus. Triplicate groups of 25 fish averaging $2.74{\pm}0.04g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) were fed one of the experimental diets. Five experimental diets including a fish meal based control diet were prepared by adding sulfur amino acid at fixed level of 1.0% and taurine at graded levels of 0%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 1.0% ($S+Tau_0$, $S+Tau_{0.25}$, $S+Tau_{0.5}$ and $S+Tau_{1.0}$, respectively). After the feeding trial, growth performance of fish fed the $S+Tau_{0.25}$, $S+Tau_{0.5}$ and $S+Tau_{1.0}$ diets were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those of fish fed the Control diet. ANOVA test suggested that when sulfur amino acid were supplemented to the diets, the optimum taurine supplementation level could be 0.25% in the diet, and broken line analysis of weight gain indicated a level of 0.33%, for positive effects on growth and feed utilization. Fish whole-body protein content and taurine concentration steadily increased with the increase of dietary level in the presence of sulfur amino acid in the diets. On the other hand, whole-body lipid content significantly decreased with the incremental levels of dietary taurine. In conclusion, the results of the present study clearly indicated that dietary supplementation of methionine and cysteine at a level of 1% could spare 0.25 to 0.33% of taurine in juvenile O. fasciatus diets.

BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF CONTROLLING A LED AFS (ADAPTIVE FRONT-LIGHTING SYSTEM) USING FUZZY LOGIC

        L. LUKACS,M. DASSANAYAKE,R. MAGALHAES,C. FONTES,M. EMBIRUCU,I. M. PEPE 한국자동차공학회 2011 International journal of automotive technology Vol.12 No.4

The vehicular illumination system has undergone considerable technological advances in recent decades such as the use of a Light Emitting Diode (LED) Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), which represents an industry breakthrough in lighting technology and is rapidly becoming one of the most important innovative technologies around the world in the lighting community. This paper presents AFS control alternatives using fuzzy logic (types 1 and 2) to determine its operating parameters taking into consideration the road conditions in the state of São Paulo (Brazil). Fuzzy logic is a well-known extension of the conventional (Boolean) logic that enables the treatment of uncertainty present in the information through the definition of intermediary membership values between the “completely true” and the “completely false”. This technique or modeling strategy is particularly important when a multi-parameter decision must be taken or the decisions are based on the human knowledge. The results show the potential of the methodology proposed and its suitability for light control providing safer nighttime driving.

      • Susceptibility of Anthonomus grandis (Cotton Boll Weevil) and Spodoptera frugiperda (Fall Armyworm) to a Cry1Ia-type Toxin from a Brazilian Bacillus thuringiensis Strain

Grossi-De-Sa, Maria Fatima,De Magalhaes, Mariana Quezado,Silva, Marilia Santos,Silva, Shirley Margareth.Buffon,Dias, Simoni Campos,Nakasu, Erich Yukio Tempel,Brunetta, Patricia Sanglard Felipe,Oliveir Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2007 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.40 No.5

Different isolates of the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis produce multiple crystal (Cry) proteins toxic to a variety of insects, nematodes and protozoans. These insecticidal Cry toxins are known to be active against specific insect orders, being harmless to mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. Due to these characteristics, genes encoding several Cry toxins have been engineered in order to be expressed by a variety of crop plants to control insectpests. The cotton boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis, and the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, are the major economically devastating pests of cotton crop in Brazil, causing severe losses, mainly due to their endophytic habit, which results in damages to the cotton boll and floral bud structures. A cry1Ia-type gene, designated cry1Ia12, was isolated and cloned from the Bt S811 strain. Nucleotide sequencing of the cry1Ia12 gene revealed an open reading frame of 2160 bp, encoding a protein of 719 amino acid residues in length, with a predicted molecular mass of 81 kDa. The amino acid sequence of Cry1Ia12 is 99% identical to the known Cry1Ia proteins and differs from them only in one or two amino acid residues positioned along the three domains involved in the insecticidal activity of the toxin. The recombinant Cry1Ia12 protein, corresponding to the cry1Ia12 gene expressed in Escherichia coli cells, showed moderate toxicity towards first instar larvae of both cotton boll weevil and fall armyworm. The highest concentration of the recombinant Cry1Ia12 tested to achieve the maximum toxicities against cotton boll weevil larvae and fall armyworm larvae were 230 ${\mu}g/mL$ and 5 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The herein demonstrated insecticidal activity of the recombinant Cry1Ia12 toxin against cotton boll weevil and fall armyworm larvae opens promising perspectives for the genetic engineering of cotton crop resistant to both these devastating pests in Brazil.

Wound dressing using graphene quantum dots: a proof of concept

Martins Vanessa Gonzalez Ferreira Caminha,Alencar Luciana Magalhaes Rebelo,Souza Pedro Filho Noronha,Lorentino Carolinne Margot Albanez,Frota Heloisa Freire, dos Santos Andre Luis Souza,Gemini-Piperni 한국약제학회 2023 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.53 No.2

Purpose The costs and complexity related to effective wound healing treatment are immense. The number of multifactorial aspects related to the treatment of wounds (inflammation, infection, and many others) implies a complex multi-therapeutic approach involving various procedures, including medication and surgery. Regarding medication, there are only a few options, especially to treat chronic wounds. Recently graphene quantum dots have been applied for their potent antimicrobial properties as well as their significant tissue remodeling properties. In this study, we developed a formulation based on graphene quantum dots in the form of as a dry powder for wound healing. Methods Graphene quantum dots were produced by top-down technique using graphite as matrix, and fully characterized by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The dry powder formulation was produced under aseptic conditions and evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Results The results showed that the formulation improved the healing process in both: in vitro and in vivo, with good adherence, healing time and tissue reconstruction. Finally, the results demonstrated that dry powder was very effective against P. aeruginosa, S. epidermidis, C. albicans and C. tropicalis, representing an improvementfor wound healing purposes. Conclusion The data corroborated the use of the dry powder formulation using graphene quantum dots as matrix as wound dressing, expanding the use of graphene quantum in the biomedical field.
