Comparative study on nano-crystalline titanium dioxide catalyzed photocatalytic degradation of aromatic carboxylic acids in aqueous medium

        P.A. Joshi,V.G. Gandhi,M.K. Mishra,M.S. Rao,A. Kumar,D.O. Shah 한국공업화학회 2011 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.17 No.2

The comparative study on titanium dioxide (TiO2) catalyzed photocatalytic degradation (PCD) of aqueous aromatic carboxylic acids (phthalic acid, o-nitrobenzoic acid, o-chlorobenzoic acid and benzoic acid) was carried out in the presence of UV radiation using air. The TiO2 catalyst, synthesized by sol–gel technique and calcined at 673 K, resulted ca. 100% anatase phase with 23 nm crystallite size and surface area of 37 m2/g. This catalyst was found to be efficient for PCD of phthalic acid, o-nitrobenzoic acid, ochlorobenzoic acid and benzoic acid in aqueous medium. However, the reactivity and degradation pathway of these carboxylic acids were observed to be greatly influenced by the substituent group present in the aromatic ring. The order of degradation of aromatic carboxylic acids was found to be phthalic acid > o-nitrobenzoic acid > o-chlorobenzoic acid > benzoic acid. The aromatic carboxylic acids having electron withdrawing groups such as –COOH, –NO2 and –Cl were comparatively more reactive for PCD than unsubstituted aromatic acid i.e., benzoic acid. The degradation of ortho substituted benzoic acids (having electron withdrawing groups) follows different mechanistic pathway than that of benzoic acid. Study of various operational parameters like effect of catalyst loading, initial concentration of phthalic acid and kinetics of phthalic acid PCD was also carried out in batch type photocatalytic reactor.

      • Control of Fowl Typhoid Using Tissue Culture Medium Waste After Harvest of Korean Wild Ginseng (Panax ginseng)

        Shah, D.H.,Seol, J.-W.,Park, S.-Y.,Ryu, K.-S.,Kwon, J.-T.,Cho, M.-R.,Park, J.-H.,Kang, C.-S.,Kang, H.-S.,Chae, J.-S. Elsevier 2005 The Journal of applied poultry research Vol.14 No.3

Abstract

Fowl typhoid (FT), caused by Salmonella gallinarum (SG), is responsible for heavy economic losses through morbidity, mortality, and reduced egg production to the poultry industry worldwide. The use of alternative medications to control FT is important in light of emergence of multiple drug-resistant strains of SG and the public's desire to have organically grown poultry. We report the efficient utilization of tissue culture medium waste after harvest of Korean wild ginseng (TCM-KWG) (Panax ginseng) as an alternative medicine in the control of FT. In a series of experiments performed in this study, we found that oral administration of TCM-KWG through drinking water significantly reduced the mortality, organ invasiveness, and fecal shedding of SG in 1-d-old chickens experimentally infected with virulent SG. The results were positively correlated with higher dose and longer duration of pretreatment with TCM-KWG in relation to reduction in mortality caused by FT. The results of this work indicate that the TCM-KWG may be used as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative medicine to control and minimize the losses due to FT in chickens.

Dielectric characteristics and thermal behaviour of terbium fumarate heptahydrate crystals

        M.D. Shah,B. Want 한국물리학회 2015 Current Applied Physics Vol.15 No.2

Dielectric properties, ac conductivity and thermal characteristics of terbium fumarate heptahydrate crystals grown by gel diffusion method have been carried out. The real part of dielectric constant, dielectric loss and ac conductivity of the material have been measured as a function of temperature and frequency of the applied electric field. Dielectric constant, dielectric loss and ac conductivity of the title compound were systematically investigated, showing a hump at about 85 ℃, which could be attributed to water molecules in the crystal boundary. The dielectric anomaly exhibited by the material has been correlated with its thermal behaviour. The ac conductivity of the material obeys the Jonscher's power law relation; σ(ω) = σ0 + Aωs, with the temperature dependent power exponent s < 1. The ac conductivity of the compound has been found to increase with the increase in frequency. The material is suggested to show protonic conduction. The non-isothermal kinetics was used to evaluate the activation energy for the dehydration step of thermal decomposition of terbium fumarate heptahydrate by using the Coats -Redfern integral method.

Lower and Upper Gastrointestinal Symptoms Differ Between Individuals With Irritable Bowel Syndrome With Constipation or Chronic Idiopathic Constipation

        Eric D Shah,Christopher V Almario,Brennan M R Spiegel,William D Chey 대한소화기 기능성질환∙운동학회 2018 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.24 No.2

Background/Aims We evaluated the distribution of lower and upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms among individuals with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in a nationwide survey. Methods Individuals (≥ 18 years of age) were identified from a nationwide sample of > 70 000 United States adults. Participants completed the National Institutes of Health GI Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (NIH GI-PROMIS) questionnaire. Symptom frequency and intensity in the prior 7 days were assessed using validated PROMIS scores. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to compare symptom prevalence in IBS-C vs CIC, and one-way ANOVA was used to assess differences in PROMIS scores. Regression analysis was performed to adjust for demographic variables. Results Nine hundred and seventy adults met eligibility criteria (275 with IBS-C, 734 with CIC). Demographics were similar among groups except for education, marital and employment status, and income. Adjusting for demographic differences, GI-PROMIS scores of global GI symptoms were higher in IBS-C (251.1; 95% CI, 230.0–273.1) compared to CIC (177.8; 95% CI 167.2–188.4) (P < 0.001). Abdominal pain was more prevalent (OR, 4.3; 95% CI, 2.9–6.6) and more severe (P = 0.007) in IBS-C. Constipation was more severe in IBS-C (P = 0.011). Incontinence was more common (OR, 2.9; 95% CI, 1.3–6.3) but just as severe (P = 0.389) in IBS-C versus CIC. Regarding upper GI symptoms, the prevalence of dysphagia, heartburn, and nausea were similar. However, IBS-C individuals had more severe heartburn (P = 0.001). Conclusion GI symptoms are generally more severe in IBS-C compared to CIC, however abdominal pain, bloating, and upper GI symptoms still commonly occur in CIC.

Dephosphorylation Enables the Recruitment of 53BP1 to Double-Strand DNA Breaks

        Lee, D.H.,Acharya, Sanket S.,Kwon, M.,Drane, P.,Guan, Y.,Adelmant, G.,Kalev, P.,Shah, J.,Pellman, D.,Marto, Jarrod A.,Chowdhury, D. Cell Press 2014 Molecular cell Vol.54 No.3

Excluding 53BP1 from chromatin is required to attenuate the DNA damage response during mitosis, yet the functional relevance and regulation of this exclusion are unclear. Here we show that 53BP1 is phosphorylated during mitosis on two residues, T1609 and S1618, located in its well-conserved ubiquitination-dependent recruitment (UDR) motif. Phosphorylating these sites blocks the interaction of the UDR motif with mononuclesomes containing ubiquitinated histone H2A and impedes binding of 53BP1 to mitotic chromatin. Ectopic recruitment of 53BP1-T1609A/S1618A to mitotic DNA lesions was associated with significant mitotic defects that could be reversed by inhibiting nonhomologous end-joining. We also reveal that protein phosphatase complex PP4C/R3β dephosphorylates T1609 and S1618 to allow the recruitment of 53BP1 to chromatin in G1 phase. Our results identify key sites of 53BP1 phosphorylation during mitosis, identify the counteracting phosphatase complex that restores the potential for DDR during interphase, and establish the physiological importance of this regulation.

X-RAY ASTRONOMY EXPERIMENT ON THE INDIAN SATELLITE IRS-P3

        AGRAWAL P. C.,PAUL B.,RAO A. R.,SHAH M. R.,MCKERJEE K.,VARIA M. N.,YADAV J. S.,DEDHIA D. K.,MALKAR J. P.,SHAH P.,DAMLE S. V.,MARAR T. M. K.,SEETHA S. The Korean Astronomical Society 1996 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.29 No.suppl1

An x-ray astronomy experiment consisting of three collimated proportional counters and an X-ray Sky Monitor (XSM) was flown aboard the Indian Satellite IRS-P3 launched on March 21, 1996 from SHAR range in India. The Satellite is in a circular orbit of 830 km altitude with an orbital inclination of $98^{\circ}$ and has three axis stabilized pointing capability. Each pointed-mode Proportional Counter (PPC) is a multilayer, multianode unit filled with P-10 gas ($90\%$ Ar + $10\%\;CH_4$) at 800 torr and having an aluminized mylar window of 25 micron thickness. The three PPCs are identical and have a field of view of $2^{\circ}{\times}2^{\circ}$ defined by silver coated aluminium honeycomb collimators. The total effective area of the three PPCs is about 1200 $cm^2$. The PPCs are sensitive in 2-20 keV band. The XSM consists of a pin-hole of 1 $cm^2$ area placed 16 cm above the anode plane of a 32 cm$\times$32 cm position sensitive proportional counter sensitive in 3-8 keV interval. The position of the x-ray events is determined by charge division technique using nichrome wires as anodes. The principal objective of this experiment is to carry out timing studies of x-ray pulsars, x-ray binaries and other rapidly varying x-ray sources. The XSM will be used to detect transient x-ray sources and monitor intensity of bright x-ray binaries. Observations of black-hole binary Cyg X-1 and few other binary sources were carried out in early May and July-August 1996 period. Details of the x-ray detector characteristics are presented and preliminary results from the observations are discussed.

Upper Endoscopy up to 3 Years Prior to a Diagnosis of Gastric Cancer Is Associated With Lower Stage of Disease in a USA Multiethnic Urban Population, a Retrospective Study

Shah, Shailja C.,Nakata, Chiaki,Polydorides, Alexandros D.,Peek, Richard M. Jr,Itzkowitz, Steven H. The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine 2019 Journal of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Vol.52 No.3

Objectives: In the USA, certain races and ethnicities have a disproportionately higher gastric cancer burden. Selective screening might allow for earlier detection and curative resection. Among a USA-based multiracial and ethnic cohort diagnosed with non-cardia gastric cancer (NCGC), we aimed to identify factors associated with curable stage disease at diagnosis. Methods: We retrospectively identified endoscopically diagnosed and histologically confirmed cases of NCGC at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Demographic, clinical, endoscopic and histologic factors, as well as grade/stage of NCGC at diagnosis were documented. The primary outcome was the frequency of curable-stage NCGC (stage 0-1a) at diagnosis in patients with versus without an endoscopy negative for malignancy prior to their index exam diagnosing NCGC. Additional factors associated with curable-stage disease at diagnosis were determined. Results: A total of 103 racially and ethnically diverse patients were included. Nearly 38% of NCGC were stage 0-Ia, 34% stage Ib-III, and 20.3% stage IV at diagnosis. A significantly higher frequency of NCGC was diagnosed in curable stages among patients who had undergone an endoscopy that was negative for malignancy prior to their index endoscopy that diagnosed NCGC, compared to patients without a negative endoscopy prior to their index exam (69.6% vs. 28.6%, p=0.003). A prior negative endoscopy was associated with 94.0% higher likelihood of diagnosing curable-stage NCGC (p=0.003). No other factors analyzed were associated with curablestage NCGC at diagnosis. Conclusions: Endoscopic screening and surveillance in select high-risk populations might increase diagnoses of curable-stage NCGC. These findings warrant confirmation in larger, prospective studies.

Ultra-High Strength Mg-9Gd-4Y-0.5Zr Alloy with Bi-Modal Structure Processed by Traditional Extrusion

        M. Hong,S. S. A. Shah,D. Wu,R.S. Chen,X. H. Du,N. T. Hu,Y. F. Zhang 대한금속·재료학회 2016 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.22 No.6

It is usual to observe that multi-scale structures can lead to combined strength and ductility both in aluminumalloys and steels, but related research has been seldom reported yet in magnesium alloys. In this study, applyingtraditional one step extrusion, we have successfully obtained a bimodal (Mg-9Gd-4Y-0.5Zr) alloy capable ofultra-high strength. The characterized sample reveal a bi-modal microstructure with two constitutions, i.e. stretchedcoarse-grain region with strong basal fiber texture and recrystallization fine-grain region. The bi-modal structuredsample exhibit excellent mechanical properties with an ultimate strength 508 MPa and elongation 8% via400 °C extrusion and subsequently 200 °C-60 h peak aging process. Ultra-high strength can be attributed toits strong extrusion texture in stretched coarse grains and dispersed nano-scale precipitates. This uniquebimodal structure could be produced easily by one step extrusion, which is quite reliable and low costs inindustrial applications of magnesium alloys with ultra-high strength as well as ideal ductility.
