While multiple studies have demonstrated a lower venous thromboembolism disease (VTED) risk for unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) compared to primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA), recent reports have shown that revision TKA also had a lower VTED risk compared to primary TKA, an unexpected finding because of its theoretical increased risk. Given the paucity of up-to-date comparative studies, our goal was to perform a high-powered VTED risk comparison study of UKA and revision TKA to primary TKA using recent data.The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database was queried between 2011 and 2018, and we identified 213,234 patients for inclusion: 191,810 primary TKA, 9294 UKA, and 12,130 revision TKA. Demographics, medical comorbidities, and possible VTE risk factors were collected. Thirty-day outcomes, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and all-cause VTED were compared between knee arthroplasty types. On multivariate analysis, UKA was significantly associated with lower rates of DVT [OR 0.44 (0.31–0.61); P < 0.001], PE [OR 0.42 (0.28–0.65); P < 0.001], and all-cause VTED [OR 0.42 (0.32–0.55); P < 0.001] when compared to primary TKA. Revision TKA was significantly associated with lower rates of PE [OR 0.62 (0.47–0.83); P = 0.002], and all-cause VTED [OR 0.82 (0.70–0.98); P = 0.029] when compared to primary TKA. Utilizing recent data from a nationwide patient cohort and controlling for confounding variables, our results showed that both revision TKA and UKA had a lower risk of VTED compared to primary TKA, corroborating the results of recent investigations. Additional prospective investigations are needed to explain this unexpected result.

<P>We present a tomographic cosmic shear study from the Deep Lens Survey (DLS), which, providing a limiting magnitude r(lim) similar to 27 (5 sigma), is designed as a precursor Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) survey with an emphasis on depth. Using five tomographic redshift bins, we study their auto- and cross-correlations to constrain cosmological parameters. We use a luminosity-dependent nonlinear model to account for the astrophysical systematics originating from intrinsic alignments of galaxy shapes. We find that the cosmological leverage of the DLS is among the highest among existing > 10 deg(2) cosmic shear surveys. Combining the DLS tomography with the 9 yr results of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP9) gives Omega(m) = 0.293(-0.014)(+0.012), sigma(8) = 0.833(-0.018)(+0.011), H-0 = 68.6(-1.2)(+1.4) km s(-1) Mpc(-1).4 1 1, and Omega(b) = 0.0475 +/- 0.0012 for Lambda CDM, reducing the uncertainties of the WMAP9-only constraints by similar to 50%. When we do not assume flatness for Lambda CDM, we obtain the curvature constraint Omega(k) = -0.010(-0.015)(+0.013) from the DLS+WMAP9 combination, which, however, is not well constrained when WMAP9 is used alone. The dark energy equation-of-state parameter w is tightly constrained when baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) data are added, yielding = - w -1.02(-0.09)(+0.10) with the DLS+WMAP9+BAO joint probe. The addition of supernova constraints further tightens the parameter to w = -1.03 +/- 0.03. Our joint constraints are fully consistent with the final Planck results and also with the predictions of a Lambda CDM universe.</P>

<P>We study the influence of spatial confinement on the second-order temporal coherence of the emission from a semiconductor mieroeavity in the strong coupling regime. The confinement, provided by etched micropillars, has a favorable impact on the temporal coherence of solid state quasicondensates that evolve in our device above threshold. By fitting the experimental data with a microscopic quantum theory based on a quantum jump approach, we scrutinize the influence of pump power and confinement and find that phonon-mediated transitions are enhanced in the case of a confined structure, in which the modes split into a discrete set. By increasing the pump power beyond the condensation threshold, temporal coherence significantly improves in devices with increased spatial confinement, as revealed in the transition from thermal to coherent statistics of the emitted light.</P>

독일은 50년 가까이 출산율이 낮은 나라 중 하나이다. 동시에 국내총생산(GDP) 대비 가장 많은 자원(약 3%)을 수십 년 동안 가족정책에 투입한 국가군에 속한다. 2011년부터 2021년까지 독일은 출산율을 1.39에서 1.58로 소폭 끌어올릴 수 있었지만 2022년 다시 큰 폭의 출산율 하락을 겪었다. 이런 맥락에서 이 글은 ‘미미하기는 해도 독일의 출산율이 회복세로 돌아설 수 있었던 원인은 무엇인가?’, ‘그 과정에서 가족정책은 어떤 역할을 했는가?’라는 두 가지 질문에 대한 답을 모색한다. Germany has been one of the “lowest low fertility countries” for almost fifty years. For several decades, Germany has also been one of the countries worldwide that spend the most on family policy services, measured in terms of gross domestic product (ca. 3%). During the years 2011 to 2021 Germany has been able to record a moderate increase in its birth rate from 1,39 to 1,58. In 2022, however, the birth rate fell again significantly. Against this background, the article addresses two questions: What are the reasons for the moderate recovery of the birth rate in the last years? What role do family policy measures play in this?

Anisotropic dimensional change on sintering may strongly affect the precision of parts produced by press and sinter. In previous work a design procedure accounting for anisotropic dimensional change of axi-symmetric parts (disks and rings) has been developed on the basis of experimental data. In this work the procedure has been applied to predict the anisotropic dimensional change of real parts produced in industrial conditions, providing that coaxial rings were identified in the geometry of the actual parts. Parts were highly different for material, complexity of geometry, green density and process conditions. Parts were measured in the green and sintered state and the measured dimensional changes were compared to the predicted ones, finding a good agreement. The procedure was also adapted to predict dimensional change of an oval feature, and highly satisfactory results were obtained.

<P>The solubility of zirconium (Zr) in the Nb<SUB>4</SUB>AlC<SUB>3</SUB> host lattice was investigated by combining the experimental synthesis of (Nb<SUB><I>x</I></SUB>, Zr<SUB>1–<I>x</I></SUB>)<SUB>4</SUB>AlC<SUB>3</SUB> solid solutions with density functional theory calculations. High-purity solid solutions were prepared by reactive hot pressing of NbH<SUB>0.89</SUB>, ZrH<SUB>2</SUB>, Al, and C starting powder mixtures. The crystal structure of the produced solid solutions was determined using X-ray and neutron diffraction. The limited Zr solubility (maximum of 18.5% of the Nb content in the host lattice) in Nb<SUB>4</SUB>AlC<SUB>3</SUB> observed experimentally is consistent with the calculated minimum in the energy of mixing. The lattice parameters and microstructure were evaluated over the entire solubility range, while the chemical composition of (Nb<SUB>0.85</SUB>, Zr<SUB>0.15</SUB>)<SUB>4</SUB>AlC<SUB>3</SUB> was mapped using atom probe tomography. The hardness, Young’s modulus, and fracture toughness at room temperature as well as the high-temperature flexural strength and E-modulus of (Nb<SUB>0.85</SUB>, Zr<SUB>0.15</SUB>)<SUB>4</SUB>AlC<SUB>3</SUB> were investigated and compared to those of pure Nb<SUB>4</SUB>AlC<SUB>3</SUB>. Quite remarkably, an appreciable increase in fracture toughness was observed from 6.6 ± 0.1 MPa/m<SUP>1/2</SUP> for pure Nb<SUB>4</SUB>AlC<SUB>3</SUB> to 10.1 ± 0.3 MPa/m<SUP>1/2</SUP> for the (Nb<SUB>0.85</SUB>, Zr<SUB>0.15</SUB>)<SUB>4</SUB>AlC<SUB>3</SUB> solid solution.</P><P>The solubility of Zr in nanolaminated (Nb<SUB>1−<I>x</I></SUB>, Zr<SUB><I>x</I></SUB>)<SUB>4</SUB>AlC<SUB>3</SUB> is investigated. Experimentally, a maximum at <I>x</I> = 18.5% is found, which is consistent with a minimum in the calculated energy of mixing at low Zr contents. How and Why University Coaches Define, Identify, and Recruit ‘Intangibles’

The purpose of this study was to explore the importance of psychosocial development in competitive university sport. While research in positive youth development (PYD) has increased in recent years, many perspectives have not yet been studied. The mission of PYD is to develop intangible qualities such as learning life skills, developing character, etc(Danish, Forneris, Hodge, & Heke, 2004; Gould & Carson, 2008). There is an implied and some times even an explicit conflict of interests between competitive and developmental sports (Shields & Bredemeier, 2009). In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Canadian university coaches who were highly trained, experienced, and successful in their respective sports. Results from this study support three conclusions. (a) Coaches described essential intangible attributes such as social character, trustworthiness, maturity, challenging one’s self, being a positive person, toughness/resiliency, motivation, work ethic, and various sport psychology skills. (b) Competitive coaches highly value athletes with life skills, character, and other intangible assets. (c) Coaches have specific strategies for assessing and identifying players with stronger intangibles, as well as for filtering out recruits who severely lack these positive qualities.
