DEVELOPMENT OF OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION AND POSITION DETECTION FOR INTELLIGENT SAFETY SYSTEM

        M. A. HANNAN,A. HUSSAIN,S. A. SAMAD,A. MOHAMED,D. A. WAHAB,A. K. ARIFFIN 한국자동차공학회 2006 International journal of automotive technology Vol.7 No.7

Occupant classification and position detection have been significant research areas in intelligent safety systems in the automotive field. The detection and classification of seat occupancy open up new ways to control the safety system. This paper deals with a novel algorithm development, hardware implementation and testing of a prototype intelligent safety system for occupant classification and position detection for in-vehicle environment. Borland C++ program is used to develop the novel algorithm interface between the sensor and data acquisition system. MEMS strain gauge hermatic pressure sensor containing micromachined integrated circuits is installed inside the passenger seat. The analog output of the sensor is connected with a connector to a PCI-9111 DG data acquisition card for occupancy detection, classification and position detection. The algorithm greatly improves the detection of whether an occupant is present or absent, and the classification of either adult, child or non-human object is determined from weights using the sensor. A simple computation algorithm provides the determination of the occupant’s appropriate position using centroidal calculation. A real time operation is achieved with the system. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the implemented prototype is robust for occupant classification and position detection. This research may be applied in intelligent airbag design for efficient deployment.

DECISION FUSION OF A MULTI-SENSING EMBEDDED SYSTEM FOR OCCUPANT SAFETY MEASURES

        M. A. HANNAN,A. HUSSAIN,A. MOHAMED,S. A. SAMAD,D. A. WAHAB 한국자동차공학회 2010 International journal of automotive technology Vol.11 No.1

The need for an embedded system that can fuse incomplete, inconsistent, and imprecise decisions from several sensing systems is a crucial step in achieving an effective decision for occupant safety measures. This paper deals with the decision fusion strategies of a multi-sensing embedded system to achieve significant enhancement in the reliability of occupant safety through the fused decisions. Multi-sensing approaches to determine weight, vision, and crash sensing are developed for occupant detection, classification, position calculation, and crash detection. A rule-based decision fusion algorithm is then developed to fuse the multi-sensing decisions. The developed sensing systems are incorporated into an embedded device. To execute the embedded system, a system interface between the software and hardware is developed using Lab Window/CVI with the C programming language. The experimental results demonstrated that the real time operation of the embedded system validate the effectiveness of the decision fusion algorithm, characterize the safety measures and monitor the decision application. Several events were tested that prove the performance of the embedded system is robust towards occupant safety measures.

      • X-ray natural birefringence in reflection from graphene

        Jansing, C.,Mertins, H.-Ch.,Gilbert, M.,Wahab, H.,Timmers, H.,Choi, S.-H.,Gaupp, A.,Krivenkov, M.,Varykhalov, A.,Rader, O.,Legut, D.,Oppeneer, P. M. American Physical Society 2016 Physical Review B Vol.94 No.4

The existence of natural birefringence in x-ray reflection on graphene is demonstrated at energies spanning the carbon 1s absorption edge. This new x-ray effect has been discovered with precision measurements of the polarization-plane rotation and the polarization-ellipticity changes that occur upon reflection of linearly polarized synchrotron radiation on monolayer graphene. Extraordinarily large polarization-plane rotations of up to 30 degrees, accompanied by a change from linearly to circularly polarized radiation have been measured for graphene on copper. Graphene on single crystalline cobalt, grown on tungsten, exhibits rotation values of up to 17 degrees. Both graphene systems show resonantly enhanced effects at the pi* and sigma* energies. The results are referenced against those obtained for polycrystalline carbon and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), respectively. As expected, polycrystalline carbon shows negligible rotation, whereas a huge maximum rotation of 140 degrees has been observed for HOPG that may be considered a graphene multilayer system. HOPG is found to exhibit such large rotation values over a broad energy range, even well beyond the pi* resonance energy due to the contributions of numerous graphene layers. To explain the origin of the observed natural birefringence of graphene, the Stokes parameters as well as the x-ray natural linear dichroism in reflection have been determined. It is shown that the birefringence directly results from the optical anisotropy related to the orthogonal alignment of pi* and sigma* bonds in the graphene layer. Our polarization analysis reveals a strong bonding of graphene on Co with a reduced sigma* excitation energy and a strong tilt of 50% of the p(z) orbitals towards diagonal orientation. In contrast, graphene on Cu is weakly bound with an orthogonal orientation of the p(z) orbitals. Exhibiting such a large natural birefringence that can be controlled through substrate choice, and because of excellent heat conductivity, graphene materials have a potential to be used as tunable x-ray phase shifting lambda/4 or lambda/2 plates in the design of future high-intensity light sources.

Optical and photoelectric properties of TlInS2 layered single crystals

        M.M. El-Nahass,A.H.S. Abd Al-Wahab,M.M. Sallam 한국물리학회 2009 Current Applied Physics Vol.9 No.3

Single crystals of the layered compound TlInS2 were grown by direct synthesis of their constituents. The spectral and optical parameters have been determined using spectrophotometric measurements of transmittance and reflectance in the wavelength range 200–2500 nm. Absorption spectra of thin layers of TlInS2 crystals are used to study the energy gap and the interband transitions of the compound in the energy region 2–2.4 eV. The dispersion curve of the refractive index shows an anomalous dispersion in the absorption region and a normal one in the transmitted region. The direct and indirect band gaps were determined to be 2.34 and 2.258 eV, respectively. Photoconductivity measurements at room temperature resolve the structure that can be identified with the optical transition. Volumetric Behaviour of Binary Liquid Mixtures at a Temperature of 303.15 K

Wahab, Mohammad A.,Ali, M. Azhar,Mottaleb, Mohammad A. Korean Chemical Society 2002 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.23 No.7

Excess molar volumes (Vm E ) of binary liquid mixtures: xC6H5CH3 + (1-x1)CH3CN or + (1-x1)C6H5NO2, or + (1-x1)C2H5NO2 have been determined as a function of mole fraction of C6H5CH3 (x) at a temperature of 303.15 K over a entire range of composition. The densities of the binary liquid mixtures were determined by pycnometrically. The VmE values of the mixtures have been found to be negative over the whole composition in order of C6H5CH3 + C6H5NO2, < C6H5CH3 + CH3CN, and < C6H5CH3 + C2H5NO2. The negative magnitude of VmE suggests the presence of intermolecular interaction in the three binary liquid mixtures.

A mathematical model to predict fatigue notch factor of butt joints

        Nguyen, Ninh T.,Wahab, M.A. Techno-Press 1998 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.6 No.4

A mathematical model is developed to predict the fatigue notch factor of butt welds subject to number of parameters such as weld geometry, residual stresses under dynamic combined loading conditions (tensile and bending). Linear elastic fracture mechanics, finite element analysis, dimensional analysis and superposition approaches are used for the modelling. The predicted results are in good agreement with the available experimental data. As a result, scatters of the fatigue data can be significantly reduced by plotting S-N curve as ($S{\cdot}K_f$) vs. N.
