The target of this work was to compare the yield of three homogenization processes (two different rotor–stator devices and a high-pressure valve homogenizer) for the development of O(green solvent)/Wemulsions containing an eco-friendly emulsifier. Rheology, laser diffraction, optical microscopy andmultiple light scattering were the main techniques used to assess the efficiency of homogenizationmethods. First the best values of the processing variables were obtained for each homogenizer andsecondly a comparison of properties of emulsions prepared with these optimum processing conditionswas carried out. The results obtained revealed that the more stable emulsions were prepared with anUltraturrax T25.

Violence linked to organized crime became a constant in several cities in Mexico, mainly in those adjacent to the United States. In this context, the relationship between the border social structure of the border and its inhabitants changed, particularly with regard to the power groups holding power in the state of Baja California. In tThis is the context, inof this article, in which I present two aspects of the mobility of entrepreneurs: a) the process in which violence settled into the border region of Tijuana and b) show the differentiated practices of mobility that allowed them to move awaydistance themselves from crime without leaving the Tijuana-San Diego border region. Based on an ethnographic fieldwork with business groups, I emphasize that in the framework of criminality, the border showed its polysemic character. By way of conclusion I affirm that with the expression of violence, lived or represented, border elites were socially and spatially reconfigured.
A Delay-based Nonlinear Controller for Nanopositioning of Linear Ultrasonic Motors

This work introduces a delay-based nonlinear controller aimed at position control of linear ultrasonic motors (LUMs), which is termed the cascade nonlinear proportional integral retarded (CNPIR) control law. This new controller incorporates a time delay in its structure, composed of two nested loops. The inner velocity loop is regulated through an integral retarded (IR) controller that contains a time delay in its structure. The outer position loop resorts to a nonlinear proportional (NP) controller endowed by a saturation function. A tuning procedure for the CNPIR controller is also proposed, and it is based on the placement of multiple dominant roots. The inner loop is tuned by assigning a dominant triple root, whereas a method based on solving a transcendental equation allows tuning the outer loop and assigns two dominant roots. Moreover, pole dominance is assessed through the argument principle. Experimental results on a linear ultrasonic motor allow assessing the real-time performance of the proposed controller to achieve high precision and fast response in spite of the effects of inner disturbances, hysteresis, and friction phenomena.

Sargassum filicinum Harvey, a brown alga (Phaeophyceae) native to Northeastern Asia, has been recently reported from the coast of Southern California (USA). Here we report the occurrence and range extension of this introduced species, as we found the alga at La Jolla and Rancho Packard in Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, Mexico. The first collections of S. filicinum correspond to several immature plants, found on September 8, 2005, drifting in the intertidal zone at La Jolla. Later on November 9, 2006, we found a well-established population in Rancho Packard in the middle intertidal zone to 2 m depth. Since S. filicinum is an annual monoecious species with air bladders, the risk there is a high risk of spreading rapidly along the Pacific, as in the case for S. muticum. The population in Rancho Packard extends 500 m along the coast, consisting mainly of young plants with an average length of 30 cm and a density of 5 thallus/m2. This is the first record of this invasive species for the Mexican Pacific coast, and it represents the southern limit along the Pacific coast of North America. This finding suggests that this invasive species has successfully colonized the Pacific coast of North America and its distributional range is still expanding.

After a year of deterioration in their diplomatic relations, in April 1879 Chile, on one side, and Bolivia and Peru, on the other, went to war for the second time in 42 years. The outcome was a resounding victory for Chile and the loss of considerable territory by her opponents. Even though hostilities ceased in 1884, ever since then relations between the three countries have been difficult, particularly, although not exclusively due to Bolivia’s claim for a sovereign access to the sea, which she lost during the war. This article analyses some of the economic factors which were crucial in the series of events that the led to the outbreak of hostilities. It is a view from the side of the winners that is to say from Chile’s viewpoint, since it was constructed mainly with documents and bibliography originating in that country.

Background: Adipose tissue accumulation in specific body compartments has been associated with diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia. Perirenal fat (PRF) may lead to have direct lipotoxic effects on renal function and intrarenal hydrostatic pressure. This study was undertaken to explore the association of PRF with cardiovascular risk factors and different stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: We studied 103 patients with CKD of different stages (1 to 5). PRF was measured by B-mode renal ultrasonography in the distal third between the cortex and the hepatic border and/or spleen. Results: The PRF thickness was greater in CKD patients with impaired fasting glucose than in those with normal glucose levels (1.10 ± 0.40 cm vs. 0.85 ± 0.39 cm, P < 0.01). Patients in CKD stages 4 and 5 (glomerular filtration rate [GFR] < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2) had the highest PRF thickness. Serum triglyceride levels correlated positively with the PRF thickness; the PRF thickness was greater in patients with triglyceride levels ≥ 150 mg/dL (1.09 ± 0.40 cm vs. 0.86 ± 0.36 cm, P < 0.01). In patients with a GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, uric acid levels correlated positively with the PRF thickness (P < 0.05). Conclusion: In CKD patients, the PRF thickness correlated significantly with metabolic risk factors that could affect kidney function.

We briefly review the recent progress in passively mode-locked fiber lasers (PMLFLs) based on semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) and discuss the detailed characterization of a SESAM-based, passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser operating in the 1.5-μm spectral range for various configurations. A simple and compact design of the laser cavity enables the PMLFL to generate either femtosecond or wavelength-tunable picosecond pulses with high stability as the intra-cavity filtering method is altered. All the cavities investigated in our experiments present self-starting,continuous-wave mode-locking with no Q-switching instabilities. The excellent stability of the source eventually enables the wavelength-tunable PMLFL to be used as a master oscillator for a power-amplifier source based on a large-core EDF, generating picosecond pulses of >10-kW peak power and >100-nJ pulse energy.

We present an all-fiberized power-scalable, sub-nanosecond mode-locked laser based on a frequencyshifted-feedback ring cavity comprised of an erbium-doped fiber, a downshifting acousto-optic modulator (AOM), and a bandpass filter (BPF). With the aid of the frequency-shifted feedback mechanism provided by the AOM and the narrow filter bandwidth of 0.45 nm, we generate self-starting, mode-locked optical pulses with a spectral bandwidth of ~0.098 nm and a pulsewidth of 432 to 536 ps. In particular, the output power is readily scalable with pump power while keeping the temporal shape and spectral bandwidth. This is obtained via the consolidation of bound pulse modes circulating at the fundamental repetition rate of the cavity. In fact, the consolidated pulses form a single-entity envelope of asymmetric Gaussian shape where no discrete internal pulses are perceived. This result highlights that the inclusion of the narrow BPF into the cavity is crucial to achieving the consolidated pulses.
A New Control Scheme for Visual Servoing

This research presents a new control scheme for visual servoing that takes into account the delay introduced by image acquisition and image processing. Firstly, previous control schemes for visual servoing are discussed and then a new control scheme is proposed and fully described. Afterwards, the capabilities (steady-state errors, stability margins, step time response, etc.) of the proposed control scheme and of previous ones are analytically analyzed and compared. Next, several simulations and experimental results are provided to validate the analytical results and to illustrate the benefits of the proposed control scheme. In particular, it is shown that this new control scheme clearly improves the performance of the previous ones.
