Characterization and functional analysis of the PtEXLA1 gene from poplar

Expansin plays a crucial role in plant growth and stress resistance as a cell wall relaxation protein. The expansin family consists of four subfamilies: EXPA, EXPB, EXLA, and EXLB. However, a few reports have been previously published investigating EXLA genes. The research here aimed to characterize the PtEXLA1 gene from a popular species (P. alba × P. glandulosa CV.84K) and evaluate its role through genetic transformation to understand its contribution to plant growth and stress resistance. The results showed that the PtEXLA1 gene was 780 bp in length, encoded 259 amino acids, and had typical characteristics of EXLA. The PtEXLA1 transgenic tobacco plants had a larger corolla in comparison to wild-type plants, and exhibited higher resistance to drought, high temperature, and salt stress based on the evaluation of chlorophyll content, relative conductivity, and malondialdehyde content. PtEXLA1 can be an efficient gene resource for stress resistance breeding of plants.
Towards Key Issues of Disaster Aid based on Wireless Body Area Networks

With recent advances in wireless communication and low-power miniaturized biomedical sensor and semiconductor technologies, wireless body area networks (WBAN) has become an integral part of the disaster aid system. Wearable vital sign sensors can track patients` status and location, thus enhancing disaster rescue efficiency. In the past few years, most of the literatures in the area of disaster aid system based on WBAN have focused on issues concerning wireless sensor design, sensor miniaturization, energy efficiency and communication protocols. In this paper, we will give an overview of disaster aid, discuss about the types of network communication as well as outline related issues. We will emphasize on analyzing six key issues in employing the disaster aid system. Finally, we will also highlight some of the challenges that still need to be addressed in the future in order to help the disaster aid system be truly and widely accepted by the public.
A Taxonomy of Agent Technologies for Ubiquitous Computing Environments

The design, development and deployment of Mobile Agent (MA) systems for high-level inference and surveillance in wireless sensor networks and RFID systems have drawn increasing attention in the past decade. To answer how the state-of-the-art of MA in a wide range of ubiquitous and sensor environments is, this paper investigates the current progress of MA. It proposes a taxonomy, by which MA systems in ubiquitous computing environments are decomposed and discussed. Then, this paper provides insights into the strengths and weaknesses of existing efforts. Finally, it presents a series of solutions from the viewpoint of various roles of MA in ubiquitous environments and situations.

A diagnostic neutral beam (DNB) has been installed on the HT-7 tokamak for the measurement of charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS). The H_α-light Doppler shift spectroscopy from the drifted duct is measured to determine the components of the neutral beam. The fractions of neutral beam species are investigated under a wide range of arc voltages and extraction high voltages of the beam aimed to the optimized species fractions for the CXRS applications. A magnet ring is used to improve the magnetic property of the ion source. The result shows that the full-energy component fractions increase from 19 to 25 percent with optimization of the beam operation, but with a dramatic increase of the water component. There are nine optical fiber channels observing one section of the beam simultaneously for this spectroscopy, which provides information of the power profiles of the beam. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the beam profile is 8 cm, as measured by using the spectroscopy.
