      • Staged Improvement in Awareness of Disease for Elderly Cancer Patients in Southern China

        Li, Xing,Dong, Min,Wen, Jing-Yun,Wei, Li,Ma, Xiao-Kun,Xing, Yan-Fang,Deng, Yun,Chen, Zhan-Hong,Chen, Jie,Ruan, Dan-Yun,Lin, Ze-Xiao,Wang, Tian-Tian,Wu, Dong-Hao,Liu, Xu,Hu, Hai-Tao,Lin, Jia-Yu,Li, Zhu Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.15

Background: In mainland China, awareness of disease of elderly cancer patients largely relies on the patients' families. We developed a staged procedure to improve their awareness of disease. Materials and Methods: Participants were 224 elderly cancer patients from 9 leading hospitals across Southern China. A questionnaire was given to the oncologists in charge of each patient to evaluate the interaction between family and patients, patient awareness of their disease and participation in medical decision-making. After first cycles of treatment, increased information of disease was given to patients with cooperation of the family. Then patient awareness of their disease and participation in medical decision-making was documented. Results: Among the 224 cancer elderly patients, 26 (11.6%) made decisions by themselves and 125 (55.8%) delegated their rights of decision-making to their family. Subordinate family members tended to play a passive role in decision-making significantly. Patients participating more in medical decision-making tended to know more about their disease. However, in contrast to the awareness of disease, patient awareness of violation of medical recommendations was reversely associated with their participation in medical decision-making. Improvement in awareness of diagnosis, stages and prognosis was achieved in about 20% elderly cancer patients. About 5% participated more actively in medical decision-making. Conclusions: Chinese elderly cancer patient awareness of disease and participation in medical decision-making is limited and relies on their family status. The staged procedure we developed to improve patient awareness of disease proved effective.

      • An Improved PEGASIS Routing Protocol Based on Neural Network and Ant Colony Algorithm

        Tao Li,Feng Ruan,Zhiyong Fan,Jin Wang,Jeong-Uk Kim 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Future Generation Communi Vol.8 No.6

This paper proposes a routing protocol for the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). It is a protocol based on the PEGASIS protocol but using an improved ant colony algorithm and neural network rather than the greedy algorithm to build the chain. Compared with the original PEGASIS, the ACON-PEG can achieve a global optimization. It forms a chain that makes the path more even-distributed and the total square of transmission distance much less. The protocol uses the thought of neural network algorithm to select the chain head, it utilizes ant colony algorithm to find the best path to send data to the BS and the whole area divided into multiple equal parts. It brings about a balance of energy consumption between nodes. Simulation results have shown that the proposed protocol significantly prolongs the network lifetime.

An anti-noise real-time cross-correlation method for bolted joint monitoring using piezoceramic transducers

        Jiabiao Ruan,Zhimin Zhang,Tao Wang,Yourong Li,Gangbing Song 국제구조공학회 2015 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.16 No.2

Bolted joint connection is the most commonly used connection element in structures and devices. The loosening due to external dynamic loads cannot be observed and measured easily and may cause catastrophic loss especially in an extreme requirement and/or environment. In this paper, an innovative Real-time Cross-Correlation Method (RCCM) for monitoring of the bolted joint loosening was proposed. We apply time reversal process on stress wave propagation to obtain correlation signal. The correlation signal’s peak amplitude represents the cross-correlation between the loosening state and the baseline working state; therefore, it can detect the state of loosening. Since the bolt states are uncorrelated with noise, the peak amplitude will not be affected by noise and disturbance while it increases SNR level and increases the measured signals’ reliability. The correlation process is carried out online through physical wave propagation without any other post offline complicated analyses and calculations. We implemented the proposed RCCM on a single bolt/nut joint experimental device to quantitatively detect the loosening states successfully. After that we implemented the proposed method on a real large structure (reaction wall) with multiple bolted joint connections. Loosening indexes were built for both experiments to indicate the loosening states. Finally, we demonstrated the proposed method’s great anti-noise and/or disturbance ability. In the instrumentation, we simply mounted Lead Zirconium Titanate (PZT) patches on the device/structure surface without any modifications of the bolted connection. The low-cost PZTs used as actuators and sensors for active sensing are easily extended to a sensing network for large scale bolted joint network monitoring.

Segregation Ratio in Selfed and Crossed Progenies Demonstrates Single Dominant Gene Inheritance of Day-neutrality in Strawberry

        Jiwei Ruan,용영록,Chunmei Yang,Guoxian Wang,Lifang Wu,Shenchong Li,Pang Tao,Chengfei Liao,Ji-Hua Wang 한국원예학회 2017 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.58 No.6

Studies on the inheritance of day-neutrality, a highly desirable trait in strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa),have not been conclusive because flowering phenotypes were evaluated based on different materials and experimentalsites. In the present study, selfed and crossed progenies of Day-neutral (DN) ‘Albion’ and June-bearing (JB) ‘Akihime’cultivars, namely ‘Albion’ × ‘Albion’, ‘Akihime’ × ‘Akihime’, and ‘Akihime’ × ‘Albion’, were established in 2013and 2014. The flowering phenotype (DN or JB) of seedlings from each of the three progenies, as well as of parentalplants, was evaluated for two successive years (2015 and 2016) in Central Yunnan, China, and their segregationratios were used to elucidate day-neutrality inheritance. Single dominant gene inheritance was demonstrated forday-neutrality, although minor genes (from the JB parent ‘Akihime’) likely increase DN magnitude. During thejuvenile stage (i.e., long before the first inflorescence), the major gene controlling day-neutrality may not beexpressed. We provide basic information for DN gene mapping and cloning, as well as materials (progenies) fordomestic DN strawberry breeding.

      • Energy Efficient Strategies with Mobile Sink for WSNs : A Survey

        Feng Ruan,Zhiyong Fan,Yiguang Gong,Jianmin Hou,Ping Mei,Tao Li 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Future Generation Communi Vol.9 No.8

Sink mobility has been widely used to reduce the energy consumption of sensor nodes, which can prolong the lifetime of nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Researchers found that sink mobility can improve the stability, throughput and lifetime of the very large-scale WSNs. However, sink mobility also causes issues such as data latency and communication overhead. With these properties sink mobility remains more research efforts under different requirements. In this paper we present a survey of energy efficient strategies in WSNs with mobile sink. Firstly, we investigate the existing issues in WSNs. Then we focus on the problem of energy efficient data gathering strategy with mobile sink and present some existing solutions. Finally, we conclude this paper with some potential extensions which need to be further explored.

Synergetics based damage detection of frame structures using piezoceramic patches

        Xiaobin Hong,Jiaobiao Ruan,Guixiong Liu,Tao Wang,Youyong Li,Gangbing Song 국제구조공학회 2016 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.17 No.2

This paper investigates the Synergetics based Damage Detection Method (SDDM) for frame structures by using surface-bonded PZT (Lead Zirconate Titanate) patches. After analyzing the mechanism of pattern recognition from Synergetics, the operating framework with cooperation-competition-update process of SDDM was proposed. First, the dynamic identification equation of structural conditions was established and the adjoint vector (AV) set of original vector (OV) set was obtained by Generalized Inverse Matrix (GIM).Then, the order parameter equation and its evolution process were deduced through the strict mathematics ratiocination. Moreover, in order to complete online structural condition update feature, the iterative update algorithm was presented. Subsequently, the pathway in which SDDM was realized through the modified Synergetic Neural Network (SNN) was introduced and its assessment indices were confirmed. Finally, the experimental platform with a two-story frame structure was set up. The performances of the proposed methodology were tested for damage identifications by loosening various screw nuts group scenarios. The experiments were conducted in different damage degrees, the disturbance environment and the noisy environment, respectively. The results show the feasibility of SDDM using piezoceramic sensors and actuators, and demonstrate a strong ability of anti-disturbance and anti-noise in frame structure applications. This proposed approach can be extended to the similar structures for damage identification.

Carotid Plaque Stiffness Measured with Supersonic Shear Imaging and Its Correlation with Serum Homocysteine Level in Ischemic Stroke Patients

        Jing Shang,Wen Wang,Jun Feng,Guo-gang Luo,Ying Dang,Jian Sun,Yan-qiu Yang,Li-tao Ruan 대한영상의학회 2018 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.19 No.1

Objective: To ascertain the feasibility of using shear wave velocity (SWV) in assessing the stiffness of carotid plaque by supersonic shear imaging (SSI) and explore preliminary clinical value for such evaluation. Materials and Methods: Supersonic shear imaging was performed in 142 patients with ischemic stroke, including 76 males and 66 females with mean age of 66 years (range, 45–80 years). The maximum, minimum, and mean values of SWV were measured for 129 carotid plaques. SWVs were compared between echolucent and echogenic plaques. Correlations between SWVs and serum homocysteine levels were investigated. Based on neurological symptom, the surrogate marker of vulnerable plaque (VP), binary logistic regression was performed and area under curve (AUC) of homocysteine only and homocysteine combing SWVmean was calculated respectively. Results: Echogenic plaques (n = 51) had higher SWVs than echolucent ones (n = 78) (SWVmin 3.91 [3.24−4.17] m/s vs. 1.51 [1.04−1.94] m/s; SWVmean, 4.29 [3.98−4.57] m/s vs. 2.09 [1.69−2.41] m/s; SWVmax, 4.67 [4.33−4.86] m/s vs. 2.62 [2.32−3.31] m/s all p values < 0.01). Pearson correlation analysis showed that stiffness of plaques was negatively correlated with homocysteine level. R values for SWVmin, SWVmean, and SWVmax were -0.205, -0.213, and -0.199, respectively. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that sex (p = 0.008), low-density lipoprotein (p = 0.015), triglycerides (p = 0.011), SWVmean (p = 0.004), and hyper-homocysteinemia (p = 0.010) were significantly associated with symptomatic ischemic stroke. Receiver operating characteristic curves revealed that SWVmean combing serum homocysteine level (AUC = 0.67) presented better diagnostic value than serum homocysteine only (AUC = 0.60) for symptomatic ischemic stroke. Conclusion: Supersonic shear imaging could be used to quantitatively evaluate stiffness of both echolucent and echogenic carotid plaques. More importantly, SWVs of plaques were not only correlated to serum homocysteine level, but also associated with symptomatic ischemic stroke, suggesting that SSI might be useful for understanding more about VP.
