<P>Here, we report on a highly conductive, stretchable, and transparent electrode of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) fabricated via modification with triblock copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)-<I>block</I>-poly(propylene glycol)-<I>block</I>-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEO<SUB>20</SUB>-PPO<SUB>70</SUB>-PEO<SUB>20</SUB>, Pluronic P123), and post-treatment with sulfuric acid. The fabricated electrode exhibits high transparency (89%), high electrical conductivity (∼1700 S/cm), and minimal change in resistance (∼4%) under repetitive stretch-release cycles at 40% tensile strain after stabilization. P123 acts as a secondary dopant and plasticizer, resulting in enhanced electrical conductivity and stretchability of PEDOT:PSS. Furthermore, after sulfuric acid post-treatment, P123 helps the electrode to maintain its stretchability. A successful demonstration of the stretchable interconnection was shown by stretching the P123-modified PEDOT:PSS electrodes, which were connected with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in series. Finally, a stretchable and transparent touch sensor consisting of our fabricated electrodes and an LED array and stretchable semitransparent supercapacitor were presented, suggesting a great potential of our electrodes in the application to various deformable devices.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

It is known that the poor soil fertility of newly reclaimed saline soils is due to the lack of organic matter and available mineral nutrients for crop production. The effect of green manuring with Sesbania aculeata in combination with five rates of urea-N treatments (N0. N25, N50, N75, N100) on the productivity of a subsequent whole-crop barley and the fertility of the reclaimed saline soil in Saemangeum was evaluated in the field during 2013-2014 growing season. Sesbania was grown during summer season (June to October). The amount of Sesbania incorporated was $16.2Mg\;ha^{-1}$. Sesbania contributed to $393kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ to the soils when ploughed down and incorporated before whole-crop barley cultivated. The performances of whole-crop barley following sesbania incorporation were significantly affected by a combination of Sesbania manuring and different N rates. The N fertilizer equivalence without N fertilizer following Sesbania was 42.6% ($63.9kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$), compared with N100 ($150kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$) in fallow soils. The whole-crop barley yield responded to N fertilizer rates in both sesbania-amended and fallow soil. The yield response to nitrogen rates in fallow soil was linear (Y=0.0586X+3.3011, $R^2=0.9534$), whereas that in sesbania-amended soils was quadratic (Y= -0.001X2+0.1322X+5.7143, $R^2=0.9576$). The yield of whole-crop barley in sesbania-amended with increasing N rates was increased up to SN75 (115 kgN) $10.3Mg\;ha^{-1}$. Apparent N recovery (ANR) of whole-crop barely showed decreased with sesbania plus increasing rates of N fertilizer. Despite higher yield with sesbania manuring plus increasing N rates, the contributions of N from Sesbania with increasing N rates to whole-crop barley were decreased, whereas those from fertilizer increment due to excessively mineralized Nitrogen. Considering yield, ANR, N contribution from Sesbania and nitrogen fertilizer, the optimum N rate was N50 rate following sesbania incorporation.

<P>Among the possible delivery routes, the oral administration of a protein is simple and achieves high patient compliance without pain. However, the low bioavailability of a protein drug in the intestine due to the physical barriers of the intestinal epithelia is the most critical problem that needs to be solved. To overcome the low bioavailability of a protein drug in the intestine, we aimed to construct a recombinant Pichia pastoris expressing a human growth hormone (hGH) fusion protein conjugated with a transcytotic peptide (TP) that was screened through peroral phage display to target goblet cells in the intestinal epithelia. The TP-conjugated hGH was successfully produced in P. pastoris in a secreted form at concentrations of up to 0.79 g/l. The function of the TP-conjugated hGH was validated by in vitro and in vivo assays. The transcytotic function of the TP through the intestinal epithelia was verified only in the C terminus conjugated hGH, which demonstrated the induction of IGF-1 in a HepG2 cell culture assay, a higher translocation of recombinant hGH into the ileal villi after oral administration in rats and both IGF-1 induction and higher body weight gain in rats after oral administration. The present study introduces the possibility for the development of an effective oral protein delivery system in the pharmaceutical and animal industries through the introduction of an effective TP into hGH.</P>

Newly reclaimed tidal land is known to be in low status of soil fertility. The incorporation of crop residue is an effective method to improve soil properties and fertility in reclaimed saline soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of rice straw (RS) application to improve physico-chemical properties of saline-sodic soil and its contribution to productivity of whole crop barley. Increasing rate of rice straw improved growth parameter related to yield of whole crop barley, which increased tiller number significantly (p<0.05).The yield increased by 15% (F.W) and 9% (D.W) in rice straw-amended plots. The content of soil organic matter (SOM) in the surface soil (0-20cm) with rice straw incorporation increased by 5~9% (RS 2.5~RS 7.5) compared to RS 0, in which the content of SOM decreased after two consecutive cultivations. Rice straw incorporation promoted soil physico-chemical properties and nutrient-availability of the test crop, as indicated in change in soil bulk density, porosity and increased nutrient uptake of plant. Especially, the P content and uptake of whole crop barley increased with increasing the rate of rice straw application. In conclusion, the rice straw application at rates of $5.0-7.5ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ in reclaimed saline soils effectively improved soil properties and crop productivity, which has potentials to reduce the loss of chemical fertilizers and facilitate the favorable condition for crop growth under adverse soil condition.

We present the sensitivity calculation results for observing the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIRB) by the Multi-purpose IR Imaging System (MIRIS), which will be launched in 2010 as a main payload of the Science and Technology Satellite 3 (STSAT-3). MIRIS will observe in I ($0.9{\sim}1.2um$) and H ($1.2{\sim}2.0um$) band with a $4{\times}4$ degree field of view to obtain the large scale structure (${\sim}3$ degree) of the CIRB. With the given specifications of the MIRIS, our sensitivity calculation results show that the MIRIS has a detection limit of ${\sim}9\;nW\;m^{-2}\;sr^{-1}$ (I band) and ${\sim}6\;nW\;m^{-2}\;sr^{-1}$ (H band), which is appropriate to observe the large scale structure of CIRB.

Plastic bottles made by polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are commonly used for packaging of beverages like juices, soft drinks, beer and water. In PET manufacturing process, antimony trioxide is frequently used as a catalyst. There is a risk of antimony migration from PET packaging into beverages. Antimony is one of the primary pollutants published by United States Environmental Protection Agency, and Antimony trioxide is probably a human carcinogen, Group 2 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. In this study, green microwave-assisted digestion method with diluted nitric acid at high temperature and pressure using a Single Reaction Chamber (SRC) was applied as sample preparation for the determination of antimony in beverages packed with PET bottles by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Method validation was carried out for the proposed method according to the AOAC guideline. All performance parameters including selectivity, linearity, recovery, repeatability, the limit of detection (LOD), and the limit of quantification (LOQ) were validated in compliance with the AOAC guideline.

Certification by Civil Aviation Law is necessary for aircraft parts and appliances as well as aircraft, engines, and propellers to ensure safety and reliability in operation. Advanced countries in aerospace industry as like U.S.A require Parts Manufacturer Approval for aircraft parts and Technical Standard Order Authorization for designated appliances. However. there are no legal requirements for cerification of aircraft parts and appliances in Korea until now. This study presents the draft to revise Civil Aviation Law, which is applicable to set up domestic certification system and maintain it equivalent to U.S. Federal Aviation Regulation.

Background/Aims: Serum alpha fetoprotein (α-FP) measurement has a limitation to detect hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) because it is elevated in various liver diseases. Therefore, we studied the sensitivity and specificity of high α-FP in the diagnosis of HCC. Methods: We studied 253 patients with HBsAg positive liver cirrhosis prospectively. We analyzed incidence of HCC related cut-off values of serum α-FP levels. During the follow-up period, we analyzed sensitivity and specificity of cut-off values of α-FP for the diagnosis of HCC, and α-FP elevation rate in relation to mass size. Results: One hundred and twenty-five patients had a transient elevation of α-FP levels above 20 ng/mL. The corresponding incidences of HCC were 27.2% (34/125) and 15.6% (20/128 patients without elevation of α-FP), respectively with a statistically significant difference (p=0.03). Among 54 patients with HCC, 18 patients (33.0%) had levels of α-FP below 20 ng/mL on the time of diagnosis of HCC. When we defined cut-off values of serum α-FP as 20, 100 and 500 ng/mL, the corresponding sensitivity and specificity for HCC were 62.9% and 24.0%, 7.4% and 54.2%, 77.3% and 91.9%, respectively. We studied sensitivity according to cut-off values of α-FP defined as 20, 100, 200, 500 ng/mL in patients with small HCC below 2 cm. The corresponding sensitivity were 50.0%, 43.7%, 25.0%, 18.7%, respectively. In patients with levels of serum α-FP below 20 ng/mL, percentages of mass size less than 2 cm, 2~3 cm, 3~5 cm and more than 5 cm were 50.0%, 25.0%, 28.5% and 25.0%, respectively. Conclusions: We suggested that in order to detect HCC, careful periodic monitoring with α-FP, ultrasonography and abdominal computed tomography is needed in patients with HBsAg positive liver cirrhosis and whose serum level of α-FP is above 20 ng/mL.
