In the multivariate calibration model, we propose a new Empirical Bayes estimator(EB estimator) which enables us to predict the panameter of interest. The EB estimator is a compromised type between the classical estimator and the inverse estimator, and attains better precision than any other estimator in Brown(1982).

In the simple calibration model, Maritz(1970) gave an empirical Bayes estimator of x_0 when y_01, …, y_0k on x_0 are observed. However, his estimator can not be applied in case k 1 which is occurred more often than not. We propose a new empirical Bayes estimator of x_0 which enables us to predict x_0 for all k and is a compromise between the classical estimator and the inverse estimator.

In spite of the debate on fuzzy methods that they may provide an altermative to probabilistic and statistical methods, both approaches are going to give way to collaboration in the very practical fields. In this paper we review the area of fuzzy clustering in which the two approaches get along with each other. The current research interest and direction is discussed and a newly developed algorithm that prevents the output from being fuzziness as much as possible is presented with an illustration.

Background : Microvascular angina or syndrom X is heterogenous and encompasses different pathogenetic entities. Several studies suggest that microvascular angina have good prognosis and occurs predominantly in postmenopausal women. Lipoprotein (a), total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, homocystein, CRP and fibrinogen are the independent risk factor of acute coronary syndrome and are the chief underlying cause of atherosclerosis. We investigated clinical characteristics and markers in patients with microvascular angina. Methods : We studies 23 patients diagnosed with microvascular angina and 16 control group with negative treadmill exercise test and no significant coronary angiogram. We investigated clinical characteristics in patients group and evaluated symptom during a follow-up period of 4.2± 2.5 month. Exercise time in treadmill exercise test was compared between patients and control group. We assessed the level of markers, such as lipoprotein (a), total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, homocystein, CRP and ESR in two groups. Results : There is no difference in age between two groups. Patients group had a tendency to increase in female, hypertension, DM, and smoking history, but there was no statistical significance difference. Exercise duration time was significantly decreased in patients with microvascular angina (p<0,05). Serum lipoprotein (a), total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholestrol, Triglyceride, ESR, Fibrinogen and Homocystein value were no significant difference between microvascular angina and control group. Only CRP was significantly high in patients with microvascular angina (p<0.05). Conclusion : There was no statistical significance difference in age, sex, hypertension, DM and smoking history between two groups but patients group had a tendency to increase the prevalence in hypertension, DM and smoking history, female. Also, Symptom improvement and disappearance in follow-up was presented in 11 patients of 19(57.9%). Exercise tolerance was worse in patients group than control group. CRP value was significantly higher in patients group than control group. There was no statistical significance difference in lipoprotein (a), total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, homocystein, ESR and Fibrinogen between two groups.

<P>Stroke results in the disruption of tissue architecture and is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Transplanting scaffolds containing stem cells into the injured areas of the brain has been proposed as a treatment strategy, and carbon nanotubes show promise in this regard, with positive outcomes when used as scaffolds in neural cells and brain tissues. Here, we show that pretreating rats with amine-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes can protect neurons and enhance the recovery of behavioural functions in rats with induced stroke. Treated rats showed less tissue damage than controls and took longer to fall from a rotating rod, suggesting better motor functions after injury. Low levels of apoptotic, angiogenic and inflammation markers indicated that amine-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes protected the brains of treated rats from ischaemic injury.</P>

노년시대를 대비하는 기능성 게임의 교과목을 개발하기 위하여 인문대학과 공과대학의 관련학과 학생들을 대상으로 연구진의 교과 항목들에 대해 중요성과 필요성에 대한 설문을 조사하였다. 양 대학의 학생들의 인지에 대한 공통점과 차이점을 분석하여 이를 토대로 융합 학제간 신 교과목을 개발하였다. 노인용 기능성 게임의 인식을 학생들에게 확산시키고자 본 교과목을 양대학의 교과과정에 포함시켜 시행하였다. For the development of a curriculum of the serious game for the elderly in preparation of senior society, we have surveyed students of both college of humanity and college of engineering for their perception of importance and necessity on the subjects prepared by this team. We analyzed their common points and different points, and developed a new interdeciplinary curriculum for students in both college. The curriculum has been opened in the last semester successfully.

A 73-year-old man was admitted with a sudden onset of dyspnea. He had never smoked. The chest radiograph and computed tomography revealed bilateral ground glass opacity and an enlarging perihilar consolidation with lymphadenopathies. There was a higher percentage of eosinophils (72%) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) than normal. The patient was diagnosed with acute eosinophilic pneumonia and managed with steroid. Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) was diagnosed by an examination of the BALF, and the patient was treated with trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole. The patient tested positive to the HIV antibody and the peripheral blood CD-4 positive lymphocyte count was only 33/μL. The percentage of eosinophils in the BALF can increase in some cases of PCP that is complicated with AIDS. Only a few cases of eosinophilic pneumonia associated with PCP pneumonia have been reported in patients with AIDS but there are no case reports in Korea. This case highlights the need to consider PCP when the percentage of eosinophils in the BALF is elevated.

Background/Aims: There are few available data regarding the association between the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the gene encoding interleukin 28B (IL28B) and a sustained virologic response (SVR) to peginterferon (PEG-IFN) plus ribavirin (RBV) therapy in Korean chronic hepatitis C patients. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of 156 patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who received combination treatment of PEG-IFN plus RBV. Blood samples from these patients were analyzed to identify the IL28B SNPs at rs12979860, rs12980275, rs8099917, and rs8103142. Association analyses were performed to evaluate the relationships between each IL28B SNP and SVRs. Results: Seventy six patients with HCV genotype 1 and 80 with genotype non-1 were enrolled. The frequencies of rs12979860 CC and CT genotypes were 90.4% and 9.6%, respectively; those of rs12980275 AA and AG genotypes were 87.2% and 12.8%, respectively; those of rs8099917 TT and TG genotypes were 92.3% and 7.7%, respectively; and those of rs8103142 TT and CT genotypes were 90.4% and 9.6%, respectively. Among the patients with HCV genotype 1, the SVR rates were 69.7% and 80.0% for rs12979860 CC and CT, respectively (P=0.71). Among the HCV genotype non-1 patients, SVR rates were 88.0% and 100% for rs12979860 CC and CT (P=1.00), respectively. Conclusions: Genotypes of the IL28B SNP that are known to be favorable were present in most of the Korean patients with chronic hepatitis C in this study. Moreover, the IL28B SNP did not influence the SVR rate in either the HCV genotype 1 or non-1 patients. Therefore, IL28B SNP analysis might be not useful for the initial assessment, prediction of treatment outcomes, or treatment decision-making of Korean chronic hepatitis C patients. Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus (BaYMV) caused significant reduction in barley yield and is difficult to control due to alive parasitic soil-borne fungus, Palmyra gamines that transmits the, virus. Previous studies have indicated that a virus-free soil could be infested by using virus-contaminated farming machineneries and implements. For the further confirmation of this finding, different proportions of BaYMV-infested soil were mixed into virus free soil. Three barley varieties (Hordum vulgarae, cv "Olbori", "Baegdong" and "Sacheon 6") were sown in pots treated with different rate of P. graminis-infested soil ranging from 0% to 100% in October 20, 2001. Results showed that BaYMV infection increased as the rate of infested soil increased. Initial symptoms were observed in a pots treated with 10% infested soil in all the 3 varieties of barley. "Olbori" had about 5% infection in 20% infested soil and about 10% infection in 40% or 50% infested soil and about 20% infection in 60% infested soil. In "Baegdong", the trend of BYMV occurrence was similar with "Olbori" but the time of severe infection was earlier than "Olbori". BaYMV infection in "Sacheon 6" was even earlier than "Baegdong" with much more severe symptoms than "Baegdong". The growth rate of barley was affected by about 19-22% when grown in 20% infested soil. As the rate of BaYMV infested soil increased the heading date was delayed but the maturing date was early in "Olbori" and "Sacheon 6". Also, reduction rate of culm length in 3 varieties increased with increase of infested soil content. However, "Olbori" showed the highest reduction. "Sacheon 6", have been characterized with long spike length, however was significantly reduced as the infested soil increased. On the other hand, spike length of "Olbori" was not significantly affected despite of increased of infested soil. The reduction rate of 1000 kernel weight was higher in large kernel size cultivar "Sacheon 6" and "Olbori" than small kernel size "Baegdong" as increase of BaYMV-infested soil content.
