Analysis of in vitro digestion using human gut microbiota in adult and elderly individuals

In vitro human digestion models are widely used to determine the digestibility of bioactive substances and to perform drug delivery analyses. To develop the most accurate in vitro human digestion model reported to date, we simulated all digestion conditions, including pH and digestion time, with changes in the amount of digestive enzymes, motility, and proportion of human gut microbiota in adult and elderly individuals. Using this newly developed model, the digestibility of bioactive materials between adult and elderly individuals. This was demonstrated through an experiment comparing the digestibility of different types of emulsified vitamin E between adult and elderly individuals. The digestibility of vitamin E emulsified by lard was found to be significantly different between adults and the elderly. Therefore, it can be concluded that this protocol provides a novel method for measuring in vitro human digestion to compare differences in drug delivery between adult and elderly individuals. In addition, this study can help to improve our understanding of the in vitro human digestion system for adults and the elderly.

Three types of representative processed meat products (ham, sausage, bacon) and five types of traditional Korean fermented foods (kimchi, red pepper paste, soybean paste, soy sauce, salted shrimp) were feed to confirm the occurrence of colon cancer and changes of the gut microbiota through animal experiments. The genus Alisipes and Bacteroides, which are highly correlated with the occurrence of colonic inflammation and colorectal cancer, showed similar or lower levels in the treatment group fed with processed meat products and fermented foods compared to the treatment group with processed meat products. Prolonged feeding of traditional fermented foods as well as processed meat products did not cause cancer in the animal group. The results of this study can provide an adequate intake of processed meat products and fermented foods that can reduce the production of carcinogenic inflammation. Furthermore, the results the change of intestinal microbes by ingestion of fermented foods can be applied to the development of technologies that can suppress the mechanism of carcinogen formation in the body in the future.
A Quantification Method in Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer Measurement

Quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS) has been widely used in the semiconductor industry to monitor plasma radical or ion species, but the signal used in QMS is mostly not quantified. To quantify QMS signals to radical density measurements, the signals should be calibrated by a reference. During this calibrating process, it is important to apply a proper signal proportional coefficient between the signal of QMS and the particle density of the plasma, which is known to be strongly related to the mass of the particle, but is not precisely well known one until now. In this work, we propose a simple approach to obtain reliable signal proportional coefficients of different masses by using with standard gases, which are precisely specified components through gas manufacturing. This approach is expected to raise the reliability of quantifying QMS data, contributing to an advance in plasma database development.
