        Performance Evaluation of CFRP Reinforced Concrete Members Utilizing Fuzzy Technique

        Aging and structural deterioration under severe environments are major causes of damage in reinforced concrete (RC) structures, such as buildings and bridges. Degradations such as concrete cracks, corrosion of steel, and deformation of structural members can significantly degrade the structural performance and safety. Therefore, effective and easy-to-use methods are desired for repairing and strengthening such concrete structures. Various methods for the strengthening and rehabilitation of RC structures have been developed over the past several decades. Recently, FRP composite materials have emerged as a cost-effective alternative to conventional materials for repairing, strengthening, and retrofitting deteriorating/deficient concrete structures, by externally bonding FRP laminates to concrete structural members. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of the FRP retrofit for circular type concrete columns under the framework of the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). Retrofit ratio, strength of existing concrete, thickness, number of layer, stiffness, ultimate strength of fiber, and size of specimens are used as input parameters to predict strength, strain, and stiffness of the post-yielding modulus. These proposed ANFIS models show reliable increased accuracy in predicting the constitutive properties of concrete retrofitted by FRP, compared to the constitutive models suggested by other researchers.

      • Detection of Proto-Oncogenes in the Genome of the Amphibian Ambystoma mexicanum

        Amphibian Ambystoma mexicanum genome was probed by Southern blot analysis for the presence of sequences homologous to nine mammalian or avian oncogences. Four genes representing two oncogene families exhibited positive signals with specific axolotl DNA restriction fragments including v-abl, v-erbB, v-fps and v-Ha-ras. v-abl gave the strongest hybridization and the signal remained positive in higher stringency wash condition. This study shows the relative conservation of these poto-oncogenes during evolution. Using positive probes, axolotl proto-oncogenes can be cloned and this study opens the possibility of studying the role of poto-oncogenes during axolotl limb regeneration. 양서류 Axolotl의 다리 재생에 있어서 세포분열과 분화를 조절하는 proto-oncogene의 발현을 연구하는 것은 생물학적으로 아주 의미 있는 일이다. 본 연구는 위의 연구를 수행하기 위하여 양서류 Ambystoma mexicanum의 게놈에 포유류나 조류의 oncogene과 비슷한 염기서열을 가진 유전자가 있는지 탐지하기 위해 Southern방법으로 분석하였다. 두 oncogene 계열에 속하는 4개의 유전자가 제한효소로 처리한 Axolotl의 게놈의 유전자 조각에 각각 결합하였다. Protein kinase oncogene family에 속하는 abl, fps와 erb B 유전자가 양성 시그날을 보였다. 또한 ras family에 속하는 H-ras가 특이한 Axolotl DNA 조각에 결합하여 양성 signal을 보였다. 본 연구로 singnal을 보인 4개의 Proto-oncogene들은 진화의 과정에서 그 염기서열을 보존하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 본 실험에서 양성 시그날을 보인 탐침 DNA들을 이용하여 그에 해당하는 Axolotl proto-oncogene을 클론 할 수 있다. 또한 이들 탐침 DNA는 양서류의 다리 재생 중 proto-oncogene의 발현 양성과 그 조절에 대한 연구를 가능하게 하였다.

      • Relationship between Accumulated Thermal Data and Corrosion Level of Rebar Embedded in Concrete

        Corrosion of rebar causes a severe problem that causes extensive damage to various types of structures. While considerable research has been carried out on measuring the amount of corrosion and methods to slow the progress of corrosion, a qualitative measurement technique that can measure the amount of corrosion of reinforcing steel need to be developed. The purpose of this research is to develop a new tech-nique to measure the corrosion level of rebar using accumulated thermal data. Accumulated thermal data were gathered using infrared cam-era and digitized to distinguish the difference between various corrosion levels of rebar. The test results shows that the higher level of corro-sion displays the higher level of temperature.

        Review of Design Flexural Strengths of Steel–Concrete Composite Beams for Building Structures

        Recently, as the use of high-performance materials and complex composite methods has increased, the need for advanced design specifications for steel–concrete composite structures has grown. In this study, various design provisions for ultimate flexural strengths of composite beams were reviewed. Design provisions reviewed included the load and resistance factor design method of AISC 360-10 and the partial factor methods of KSSC–KCI, Eurocode 4 and JSCE 2009. The design moment strengths of composite beams were calculated according to each design specification and the variation of the calculated strengths with design variables was investigated. Furthermore, the relationships between the deformation capacity and resistance factor for flexure were examined quantitatively. Results showed that the design strength and resistance factor for flexure of composite beams were substantially affected by the design formats and variables.

        Effects of Cyclic Loading Rate on Response f Reinforced Concrete Structures

        본 논문의 내용은 혈간콘크리트 보-기둥 접합부가 지진 하중을 받을때의 거동에 대하여 관찰한 것 이다. 똑같이 제작된 두개의 시험체에 정적 반복하중과 동적반복하중을 가하여 하중-처집 곡선이나 파괴 성상동에 판하여 차이점을 기록하였다. 동적하중을 받는 시험체의 거동은 내진설계 규준에서일 반적으로 쓰여지는 정적 하중 하에서의 시험체의 거동과는 판이한 양상올 보여주었다. 시험체가 동적 하증을 받을때에는 정적하중올 받을때 보다 @ 극 한하중이 20-25 % 증 가하고 @ 높은 취성을 보이며 @ 균열이 집중되고, @ 휩파괴 보다는 전단파괴현상을 나타내었다. Small- scale models of reinforc어 concrete beam- column joints and anchorage- bond s야'!Clmens were subjected to large cyclic displacements at two rates. To assess damage, free vibration tests were conducted. The reliability of the m여eling techniques was established by compari잉n of the res비ts for the slower rate with those obtained from the full • scale tests on prototype. The higher rate of loading caused a greater damage than that at the slower rate. This was evidenc어 by the measurements of the stiffness obtained from the free - vibration test. The relatively greater extent of damage appears to result from the different bond behavior at different rates of loading.

        Strengthening methods for existing wall type structures by installing additional shear walls

        Before incorporating the earthquake-resistance design in design standard (1988) in South Korea, most of existing residential buildings were built without having lateral resistance capacity in addition to their structural peculiarity, such as exterior stair ways, exterior elevator room. For these reasons, the demands on retrofitting research for existing buildings arise recently and many retrofitting methods are proposed. These tasks are important to reduce the enormous economic loss and environmental issues. As the main purpose, this study was intended to examine the performance improvement in terms of ductility and strength in the wake of retrofitting and to suggest retrofitting details.
