      • Histone deacetylase 3 is selectively involved in L3MBTL2-mediated transcriptional repression

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>This is the first report that L(3)mbt-like 2 (L3MBTL2) specifically interacts with the histone deacetylase domain of histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) via its MBT domain. Here, we show that L3MBTL2 selectively interacts with HDAC3, but not other class I HDACs. An in vitro peptide-binding assay demonstrated the specific association of HDAC3 with methylated histone-K20 tail and L3MBTL2. Furthermore, depletion of HDAC3 resulted in a decrease of methylated K20-H4, as well as an increase in acetylated histone H3. Consequently, HDAC3 knock-down selectively suppressed L3MBTL2-mediated transcriptional repression.         저체중 또는 과체중 청소년에서 캠프 프로그램을 이용한 영양 교육효과에 관한 연구

        This study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of a nutrition education program developed for nutritionally imbalanced adolescents. A summer nutrition camp was held for 23 overweight and 16 underweight subjects. Its effectiveness with regard to was evaluated at the end of the camp and 6 months later. Nutrition knowledge, nutritional attitude, food behavior, nutrient intake, exercise habit and ideal body figures desired by the subjects. The results showed significantly higher nutrition knowledge scores at the end of the camp as compared to those obtained prior to the camp program, and these scores were maintained for at least six months. Nutrition attitude scores also improved after the education program, and these improved scores also lasted for 6 months. However, the food behavior scores measured 6 months after the education program were not significantly different from those obtained prior to the camp. Also, the exercise habit, the ideal body figures and the body figures desired by the subjects remained unchanged. When nutrient intakes of subjects were assessed before the program and 6 months later, the mean daily vitamin C intake was significantly increased after the education program. Also, the intake of iron from plant food sources increased in the overweight subjects, while less iron from animal source were consumed by the underweight subjects. Both groups tended to consume more vegetables and fruits 6 months after the education program which may have contribute to the higher vitamin C and plant-based iron intakes. These results indicate that a 4-day nutrition education camp program sustained changes in nutrition knowledge and nutrition attitude for 6 months. The increased intake of vegetables and fruits was also achieved through this education program. However, changes in dietary behavior in adolescents may require repeated education.

      • An S-locus receptor-like kinase in plasma membrane interacts with calmodulin in <i>Arabidopsis</i>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Calmodulin-regulated protein phosphorylation plays a pivotal role in amplifying and diversifying the action of calcium ion. In this study, we identified a calmodulin-binding receptor-like protein kinase (CBRLK1) that was classified into an S-locus RLK family. The plasma membrane localization was determined by the localization of CBRLK1 tagged with a green fluorescence protein. Calmodulin bound specifically to a Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>-dependent calmodulin binding domain in the C-terminus of CBRLK1. The bacterially expressed CBRLK1 kinase domain could autophosphorylate and phosphorylates general kinase substrates, such as myelin basic proteins.         한국인 직무 스트레스 측정도구의 개발 및 표준화

        Background and Purposes: Over the past three decades, numerous studies performed in Korea have reported that job stress is a determinant risk factor for chronic diseases and work disability. Every society has its own culture and occupational climate particular to their organizations, and hence experiences different occupational stress. An occupational stress measurement tool therefore needs to be developed to estimate it objectively. The purpose of this study is to develop and standardize the Korean Occupational Stress Scale (KOSS) which is considered to be unique and specific occupational stressors in Korean employees. Subjects and Methods: Data were obtained from the National Study for Development and Standardization of Occupational Stress (NSDSOS Project: 2002-2004). A total of 12,631 employees from a nationwide sample proportional to the Korean Standard Industrial Classification and the Korean Standard Occupational Classification were administered. The KOSS was developed for 2 years (2002-2004). In the first year, we collected 255 items from the most popular job stress measurement tools such as JCQ, ERI, NIOSH and OSI, and 44 items derived from the a qualitative study (depth interview). Forty-three items of KOSS, in the second year, were retained for use in the final version of the KOSS by using Delphi and factor analysis. Items were scored using conventional 1-2-3-4 Likert scores for the response categories. Results: We developed eight subscales by using factor analysis and validation process: physical environment (3 items), job demand (8 items), insufficient job control (5 items), interpersonal conflict (4 items), job insecurity (6 items), organizational system (7 items), lack of reward (6 items), and occupational climate (4 items). Together they explained 50.0% of total variance. Internal consistency alpha scores were ranged from 0.51 to 0.82. Twenty-four items of the short form of the KOSS (KOSS-SF) were also developed to estimate job stress in the work setting. Because the levels of the subscales of occupational stress were gender dependent, gender-specific standard norms for both the 43-item full version and the 24-item short form using a quartile for the subscales of KOSS were presented. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that KOSS might be an appropriate measurement scale to estimate occupational stress of Korean employees. Further and more detailed study needs to be conducted to improve the validity of this scale.

        A 10 month-old Yorkshire Terrier was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University with the history of lethargy, bile pigment in urine and anorexia. Blood smear showed Heinz body, polychromatocytosis, schistocytosis, anisocytosis, which were the results from the oxidative injury. Hematology demonstrated a moderate anemia(PCV 22.4%, reference rage 35-55%), which was regeneration based on the degree of RPI (4.03, reference rage > 1). Serum biochemistry demonstrated mild elevation in total bilrubin, and mild decrease in total protein and albumin concentration. A diagnosis of Heinz body hemolytic anemia secondary to onion ingestion was made and treated with fluid therapy, oxygen and antioxidant drugs. The dog recovered without any complication.

      • N-nitrosodiethylamine을 투여한 쥐의 간조직에서 polyamine과 c-AMP의 생성에 관한 연구

        쥐에 N-nitrosodiethyamine을 복강주사하여 간조직에서의 polyamine과 c-AMP의 변화에 대하여 연구하였다. HPLC로 분석한 결과, polyamine과 c-AMP의 농도는 복강주사후 3일에 대조군에 비해 약 1.2배 증가하는 현상을 나타내었으며, 10일에 각각 3.6배와 1.2배 증가하였다. spermidine과 spermine농도의 증가는 c-AMP와 관련이 있는 것으로 보이며, 조직에서 polyamine과 c-AMP측정으로 종양의 임상화학적 진단에 유용하게 활용될 것으로 기대된다. The change of polyamine and c-AMP content in the liver of rat were investigated after a single intra peritoneal injection of N-nitrosodiethylamine. These compounds were analyzed quantitatively by HPLC. Both polyamine and c-AMP concentrations showed a slight increase at 3days after injection and elevated to a level about 1.2 times higher than of control value. Polyamine and c-AMP concentrations increased to 3.6 and 1.2 fold of control at 10 days after the N-nitrosodiethylamine injection. An increase in spermidine and spermine concentration may be related to c-AMP. The data suggested that the determination of polyamine and c-AMP level may have clinical utility for tumor monitoring.

        John Donne was an English poet in seventeenth century. He was one of major members in metaphysical poets. He wrote his poetry by new technics, images, and mataphors. He rejected the convention of Petrachan adoration. His poetry was the expression in unconventional, witty language of all the moods of a lover. Wit may be considered as a kind of discordia concors; a combination of dissimiliar images or discovery of occult resemblances in things apparently unlike. His major work, songs and sonnets, was expressed these poetical technics. Russian Formalism has an important part in 20th century literary criticism. Shklovsky, as a formalist, said that the technique of art is to make objects ‘unfamiliar’, to make forms difficult, to increase the difficult and length of perception. He thought that ‘Defamiliarisation’ was one of his most attractive concepts. This thesis is to study ‘Defamiliarisation’ and then the literary theory try to be adapted to John Donne’s poetry.

        장내의 탄수화물과 지방 흡수 억제를 통한 체지방 및 비만 개선 효과에 관한 연구

        In a previous study, a dietary supplement was developed in our lab using natural herbal extracts against digest enzyme activity in GI tract for weight control. This natural herbal extracts could regulate absorption of glucose and lipid by the inhibition of digest enzyme activity. In this study, we screened the natural herbs that inhibit glucoamylase activity and developed an water extract of cinnamon. The cinnamon extract delayed and decreased the increment of carbohydrate degradation through the inhibition of glucoamylase activity in vitro. Fifty volunteers were subjected to the intake of the herbal extracts by taking twice a day for 60 days. As a result, the treated subjects lost 3kg of body weight and 3.5kg of body fat mass after the treatment. Furthermore, the body mass index and waist size were significantly decreased during the experimental period. Above results suggested that the administration of the dietary additives composed of cinnamon and natural herbal extract improves the obesity by the decrement of body weight and body fat mass.

        한국어판 정신증상평가척도의 신뢰도와 타당도

        Objectives : Psychotic Symptom Rating Scale (PSYRATS) is an assessment tool to measure the seventy of different dimen-sions of auditory hallucinations and delusions. The reliability and validity of the Korean version of PSYRATS (K-PSYRATS)were examined in Korean patients with major psychosis. Methods : The inter-rater reliability of the K-PSYRATS was determined from the videotaped interviews of the five Schizoph-renic patients. To measure validity and internal consistency reliability, the 109 patients with auditory hallucinations or delusions were assessed using the K-PSYRATS, Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Clinical Global Impression-Se-verity (CGI-S) scale. Results : K-PSYRATS was found to have excellent inter-rater reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient of auditory haliu-cination=0.81, P<.001, intm-class correlation coefficient ofde1usion=0.97, P<.001) and internal consistency reliability (Cron-bach's a of auditory hallucination =0.77, Cronbach's α of delusion =0.76). Significant correlation was found between K-PSY-RATS and positive syndrome subscale of PANSS and CGI. Conclusion : K-PSYRATS is a useful assessment instrument for psychotic symptoms in Korea.
