To date, only a few large-scale studies have measured the effect of dialysis modality on mortality in Asian populations. Here, we sought to compare survival between incident hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients using the Korean Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service database. This enabled us to perform a population-based complete survey that included 32,280 incident dialysis patients and followed them for a median of 26.5 months. To reduce biases due to nonrandomization, we first matched 7049 patient pairs with similar propensity scores. Using the log-rank test, we found the mortality rate in PD patients was significantly higher than that in HD patients. Subsequent subgroup analyses indicated that in older patients (55 years and older), with the exception of the subgroup of patients with no comorbidities and the subgroup of patients with malignancy, PD was consistently associated with a higher mortality rate. In younger patients (under 55 years), regardless of the covariates, the survival rate of PD patients was comparable to that of HD patients. Thus, while the overall mortality rate was higher in incident PD patients, mortality rates of some incident PD and HD patients were comparable in Korea.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the static (SFF) and kinetic frictional forces (KFF) in sliding mechanics of hybrid bracket systems that involve placing a conventional bracket (CB) or active self-ligating bracket (ASLB) on the maxillary anterior teeth (MXAT) and a passive SLB (PSLB) on the maxillary posterior teeth (MXPT). Methods: The samples consisted of two thoroughbred types (group 1, anterior-CB + posterior-CB; group 2, anterior-ASLB + posterior-ASLB) and four hybrid types (group 3, anterior-CB + posterior-PSLBtype 1; group 4, anterior-CB + posterior-PSLB-type 2; group 5, anterior-ASLB + posterior-PSLB-type 1; group 6, anterior-ASLB + posterior-PSLB-type 2) (n = 13 per group). After maxillary dentition alignment and maxillary first premolars removal in the stereolithographically-made typodont system, a 0.019 × 0.025-inch stainless steel wire was drawn through the right quadrant of the maxillary arch at 0.5 mm/min for 5 min. The SFF and KFF were measured with a mechanical testing machine and statistical analyses were performed. Results: Four different categories of SFF and KFF were observed among all groups (all p < 0.001). Group 1 demonstrated the highest SFF and KFF; groups 4 and 3 were second and third highest, respectively. The fourth category included groups 2, 5, and 6. Placing PSLBs on the MXPT resulted in significant SFF and KFF reductions in cases with CBs on the MXAT, but not in cases with ASLBs on the MXAT. Conclusions: These data might aid in the development of a hybrid bracket system that enables low-friction sliding of an archwire through the MXPT.

The Directed energy deposition (DED) process uses a high-density energy source like laser to locally melt the substrate and deposition material and deposited it layer by layer. In order to manufacture products using the DED process, firstly must be considered the relationship of process parameters. In this study, investigation of multi-bead deposition characteristics according to laser power, scan speed, and hatch distance. The substrate and the powder materials are Inconel 718 superalloy. Through experimentation, deposited specimens were fabricated, and bead shape and dilution layer shape data were acquired through post-processing. The relationship between the heat history and the bead generation according to the process parameters was investigated using heat transfer analysis. As a result of the experiment and analysis, it was concluded that the hatch distance should be changed as the laser power and the scan speed to obtain a constant plane.

In adults, most intussusceptions develop from a lesion, usually a benign or malignant neoplasm, and can occur at any site in the gastrointestinal tract. Intussusception in the proximal gastrointestinal tract is uncommon, and gastro-gastric intussusception is extremely rare. We present a case of gastro-gastric intussusception secondary to a primary gastric lymphoma. An 82-year-old female patient presented with acute onset chest pain and vomiting. Abdominal CT revealed a gastro-gastric intussusception. We performed upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, revealing a large gastric mass invaginated into the gastric lumen and distorting the distal stomach. Uncomplicated gastric reposition was achieved with endoscopy of the distal stomach. Histological evaluation of the gastric mass revealed a diffuse large B cell lymphoma that was treated with chemotherapy. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2016;68:40-44)

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We synthetized and investigated the anti-leukemic potential of the novel cytostatic bis(4-hydroxycoumarin) derivative OT-55 which complied with the Lipinski's rule of 5 and induced differential toxicity in various chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cell models. OT-55 triggered ER stress leading to canonical, caspase-dependent apoptosis and release of danger associated molecular patterns. Consequently, OT-55 promoted phagocytosis of OT-55-treated CML cells by both murine and human monocyte-derived macrophages. Moreover, OT-55 inhibited tumor necrosis factor α-induced activation of nuclear factor-кB and produced synergistic effects when used in combination with imatinib to inhibit colony formation <I>in vitro</I> and Bcr-Abl<SUP>+</SUP> patient blast xenograft growth in zebrafish. Furthermore, OT-55 synergized with omacetaxine in imatinib-resistant KBM-5 R cells to inhibit the expression of Mcl-1, triggering apoptosis. In imatinib-resistant K562 R cells, OT-55 triggered necrosis and blocked tumor formation in zebrafish in combination with omacetaxine.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> OT-55 inhibits cell proliferation and viability in CML. </LI> <LI> OT-55 induces ER stress, ecto-CRT, ecto-ERp57, ATP and HMGB1 elease leading to immunogenic cell death. </LI> <LI> OT-55-treated CML cells are phagocytosed by macrophages. </LI> <LI> OT-55 synergizes with imatinib in CML. </LI> <LI> OT-55 synergizes with Synribo in Bcr-Abl mutated CML. </LI> </UL> </P>
