<P>We studied the cytoprotective effect of triphlorethol-A against γ-ray radiation- induced oxidative stress. In this study, hydrogen peroxide, which is a reactive oxygen species (ROS), was detected using 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCF-DA) assay. Triphlorethol-A reduced intracellular hydrogen peroxide generated by γ-ray radiation. This compound provided protection against radiation-induced membrane lipid peroxidation and cellular DNA damage which are the main targets of radiation-induced damage. Triphlorethol-A protected the cell viability damaged by the radiation through inhibition of apoptosis. Triphlorethol-A reduced the expression of bax and activated caspase 3 induced by radiation, but recovered the expression of bcl-2 decreased by radiation. Taken together, the results suggest that triphlorethol-A protects cells against oxidative damage induced by radiation through reducing ROS.</P>

<P> The present study investigated the cytoprotective properties of glycitein, a metabolite formed by the transformation of glycitin by intestinal microflora, against oxidative stress. Glycitein was found to scavenge intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, and thereby preventing lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. Glycitein inhibited apoptosis of Chinese hamster lung fibroblast (V79-4) cells exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) via radical scavenging activity. Glycitein abrogated the activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) induced by H2O2 treatment and inhibited DNA binding activity of activator protein-1 (AP-1), a downstream transcription factor of JNK. Taken together, these findings suggest that glycitein protected H2O2 induced cell death in V79-4 cells by inhibiting ROS generation and JNK activation.</P>

Telomerase activation is detected in most cancerous cells; hence, telomerase is a highly selective target for cancer therapy, which plays an important role in the apoptotic process. We have previously reported that the ginseng saponin metabolite, Compound K (20-O-D-glucopyranosyl-20(S)-protopanaxadiol, IH901), inhibits cell proliferation by inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest at the $G_1$ phase. The present study investigated the regulation of telomerase activity in Compound K treated U937 cells. Compound K treatment caused a reduction in telomerase activity and down-regulated the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene, resulting in the decreased expressions of its protein, and of the c-Myc and Spl proteins (transcription factors of hTERT). These results indicate that the anticancer activity of Compound K could be mediated by inhibition of the telomerase activity.

We carried out the literature study, question survey, and a field study systematically on overall matters pertaining to the laws and institutions, etc., related to fishing industry in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province amid the enforcement of the ‘Fishing Management and Promotion Act’, and furthermore, performed comprehensive reviews and analyses of current status, deriving on support and measures for development of fishing industry. Based on results of the surveys, support would need to be provided at policy level to underpin growth and advancement of fishing industry in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, including the expansion of policy-based support for advancement of fishing industry, creation of safe and comfortable fishing space, resolution of disputes and conflicts swirling over the use of fishing grounds and fish resources, establishment of legal, institutional, and managerial organizations related to fishing industry, shift from regulation-centric administration and policies related to fishing industry, formulation of educational and promotional programs to help desirable fishing culture take root.
연안개량안강망 어구에 대한 어구 자동식별 부이의 설치방안에 관한 연구

This study is a baseline study on the development of automatic identification monitoring system for fishing gear. To seek the installation methods for automatic identification devices of fishing gear, with a focus on coastal stow net that have been lost in the West Coast, this study conducted a literature analysis and field investigation on the coasts of Mokpo-si, followed by a survey on the status and causes of fishing gear loss. Coastal stow net in Mokpo-si share a similar fishing gear structure with offshore stow nets, but without a submerged buoy at the codend in a stern-type fishing system. They differ from offshore stow net in the fishing method of shooting and hauling on the whole net for each fishing operation. The survey showed that tidal current as the cause of coasting stow net loss by 75%. As for the lost part, the bag net was the most frequently lost by 30.0%, followed by the anchor by 20.0%. The most frequently destroyed position of the bag net was the middle by 66.7%, followed by the bottom by 33.3%. The installation methods of automatic identification buoy of fishing gear to resolve this are as follows: installing one automatic identification buoy to be developed at one of the two buoys of the coastal stow net, and then installing one underwater transmitter at the edge of the codend; or installing one automatic identification buoy at the two buoys, and then installing each underwater transmitter at each side of canvas and codend. The fishermen positively recognize the need to develop an automatic identification buoy of fishing gear, in addition to a negative perception to the convenience and economic efficiency of product management. Post-development A/S and governmental support are needed to widely commercialize the product and lessen the financial burden of fishermen.
